Gus is such a humble man. I can relate to his feelings as an historian. It's one thing to learn history from the written word, it's another level when you see it being revealed before your eyes.

Ann H

Our of the earth you pull narrative...wonderful turn of phrase.

David Boon

Great interview. Gus brings a new dynamic to Time Team . Looking forward to hearing from him more in the final shows.

Stephen Southworth

We are lucky to have Gus on board….he’s far too modest about his talents.

Sandy Mccrone

Gus, you’re a charming and attractive man. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Robert Wise

In the intro shot, are those circular crop marks about 50+ meters out in front of the big tent and slightly camera-wards? Gus … no worries about how you come across … you do well!

Stephanie Hogan

Gus is a great addition to the team. He gives a different perspective and an appreciation for the work that makes the whole thing come together.

Don Cook

There is, of course, nothing wrong with anybody's face; look into Your eyes (in the mirror, please), and tell Yourself, "I love You!" . it is truly Your birthright.

Jen A

With the discussion of archaeo-fashion, who else thought about Mick’s striped knitted sweaters and hats? 🙋🏼‍♀️ I appreciated hearing about Gus’ personal interest in history as well.

Mary Lu

This is great stuff! Fun to see the project in progress throughout the day. I really enjoyed hearing Gus present his thoughts on the value of archaeology, with its nuances, and the particular value of the group process used by Time Team. I also enjoyed his comments on the history of fashion and it’s place in human culture. Such an interesting idea. Makes me want to know more about that.

Olivia McGerty

If I weren’t already an archaeologist, I would want to be one after listening to Gus! What a lovely, articulate man!

DOOBAT

It's something you hear from a number of actors, too, that they don't enjoy watching themselves. Don't worry, Gus, as a viewer, I've only enjoyed what you've been doing, just keep doing you! I do wonder, as he's a fan, too, what kind of digs does he enjoy watching? Early prehistory, Roman, medieval, early modern, etc.?

Charlotte Edmonds

Well that was just lovely! What a heartwarming end to the day. I had no idea about Gus' work before but it sounds like it really aligns with the spirit of Time Team, bringing history to a wider audience than the already-inclined.

Patricia Amero

Gus gives an excellent summary and really great interview. 👏

Ian Smith

I agree, great coverage today - in their own way and style it felt like the spirit and cameraderie of Seasons 1 thru 20. I must also acknowledge the fixing of the audio quality from Day 1, especially certain presenters who I was prepared to christen the 'Mumble Brothers'. :-) I could hear every word today and am so glad because every one of those words was worth hearing. I hope you enjoyed a good pint or two tonight!

John VanAntwerp

I have to say the I think Gus is doing a great job as well. And I'm sure it will continue to get better as more Time Teams get made and Gus gains full stride. And please let Gus know that he has gained a fair-sized following in the American Midwest thanks to his work on Time Team!

James D Speckart

It's great to hear so much from Gus. I think it took the original time team crew several seasons (and dozens of digs) to really figure things out, so I hope this new crew can continue to try out a fresh new take on Time Team. Good luck y'all!

Conan Mills

Being American, I had never heard of Gus before he was announced as the new presenter of the show. When I looked him up on YouTube, I was immediately impressed with his presentation style and knew he would fit right in. I am so glad he is on the show!!

Michael O'Connor

As a fellow academic historian, I totally get what he is saying. Yeah, I get to pour through wonderful old documents and hear the voices of the past, but I love being outdoors and am a bit envious of disciplines that work in teams like this. I'm mostly on my own when doing my work. I do love it, but it would be so great to share that experience with others.

Michael O'Connor

Same, as a musician, I almost never listen to recordings of my concerts. I was there. I want to keep that perception of the event. Go Gus.

Ann Wagner

I salute you, Gus. I’m a fellow art historian who has long been fascinated by archaeology. You, Gus, actually made it to the sites! Wonderful! I love hearing your views.

Susan Strangman

Thinking of Mick and Robin. Fashion leaders both. 🥺🥺🥺

Donna Oglesby

Hello form Upper Northeast Illinois USA. Not knowing much at all about Mr. Hayford, it was enlightening to hear that he is so interested in History. my own Personal view of him, is he is a bit dry but still a good presenter, and think Time Team will do well with JUST him as a presenter. I Look forward to more clips with him to get to know him better. Does he have a favorite time period in history that interests him more than other time periods??

Peter Gore

Not sure what he adds to the programmes.. Bit like Mel Gedroyk, just seems superfluous (though less annoying).. At least Tony Robinson told the story and facilitated the context but I don't see what Gus adds.. Sure he's a good presenter etc but...

JUDITH COOKE

Thanks for this wonderful interview. It was important to hear Gus’ thoughts on his involvement in Time Team and its influence on other aspects of his life as a historian. I am also a historian and genealogist and found his insights and enthusiasm very helpful and exciting. I had also just asked elsewhere where Natalie was, so thanks also for that update. Looking forward to more opportunities to get to know the Team better and to participate in all the action of the digs

Nicholas & Elizabeth Dyer

We do enjoy these behind the scenes insights and interviews, it adds a different perspective to the program that we would not have if we were not Patreon members. They make an enjoyable program even more enjoyable. Listening to Gus talk, it feels he's more settled into his role on Time Team, just a shame Natalie is not able to make it this year.

Anja Adam

You know, if you rewatched the first few episodes (including the pilot) of Time Team with Tony, you could see how insecure Tony was at the time. He himself once said in an interview that at first he felt a bit out of place. But over time (and probably through the growing friendship in the team and his growing interest in archeology) he became more secure, more self-confident and more open. Gus has a different way of presenting. He is also a historian, not just a presenter. His scientific approach and his passion for the subject are obvious and unmistakable. I for one am very happy that Time Team was able to hire a moderator like Gus!

Michael Taylor

Really loving the content from the dig! So proud to be part of the Time Team family - are we expecting a third dig this year? I can't remember if the membership push was for a third dig this year or next :D

Diane Johnston

I smiled throughout that interview - excellent stuff!

El Bo

Interesting to see the angle Gus approaches this from. I will look up your podcast on the BBC.

Jakub Jůzl

Gus seems like a smart and humble person, though honestly I'm not particularly sure whether his talents are best suited for presenting. There's just something about his presenting style which reminds me of some of the harder lectures at my alma mater - smart people talking at length but not quite gripping the audience while at it.

Andrew Gledhill

I have to agree with you on that one. I have nothing against Gus. But he is not a patch on Tony. He is OK. But I am disappointed that they couldn't persuade Tony to come back.

Jon Colcord

I understand this, but as a radio presenter myself (of music), I can’t help but listen back. Not to listen to myself however, but to hear the flow and brilliance of the songs again! Just once. While actually presenting, it’s hard to listen to the music the way I want!

Jon Colcord

They had said that it was for this year!

Jon Colcord

This was great. I like that they were able to show us Gus being Gus. If he can begin to bring more of his gregarious personality into his approach to presenting on Time Team, then he will have truly arrived!

Jude Edling

Thank you for this marvelous interview with Gus. So much that he said resonates with me, not only his appreciation for Time Team and archaeology, but his interest in clothing as I'm a sewer, costumer, quilter, knitter, textile artist. I will look for his Torn. Gus is a wonderful presenter. I hope Natalie will be back as I miss her sharp wit and wish her all the best on her book tour.

LouLi

It was lovely to hear the three of you laugh!

Mónica Courtial

Thank you for such a nice interview with Gus. We get to know him just a bit better. Will be looking up his podcast and following him. Glad Gus brought up the Sartorial Choices of Archeologist because we don’t give sartorial research much credibility. We forget how dress mattered to our ancestors wearing today’s mass produced clothing.

Laura Rash

It seems to me a huge amount of early trade connections were related to what people wore...I would love to see more about this... in early TT they often dressed members up in Roman attire, monks robes, etc. Fashion often came from far away even then.

Carl Johnson

Great catch up video with Gus Casely-Hayford. I just subscribed to his Torn podcast and looking forward to listening to all the episodes during the week.

prissy

Concerning fashion, my wife was in love with Mick's colourful clothing, and followed Phil's hats, noticing when they changed. Another joke between us was John's car key on geophys plots. We would try to notice, if he had a new car. Most of the new team haven't been there long enough to pick up on these sort of things.

deadmanjones

You've taken on the previous critiques from patreon comments, owned them, fixed them. As a consequence everything that was great is greater, thank you.

Kerry Hennigan

Dear Gus, there's nothing wrong with your face! Keep up the good work. I love the 'behind the scenes' glimpses of the team members.

Di

Great interview Derek and Lawrence thank you. Wonderful to get to know Gus better.

Timothy Kendrick

I agree. If Gus would just be himself, like he is in this interview, when he presents the show he would be much better. In last years episodes he came across as being fake/phony. He just needs to be himself when presenting and he'll be fine.

Andrew Hingston

I am pleased that things are going well for Natalie, but I do regret her absence. As a man I am very comfortable with the blokeish atmosphere that often developed around TT and archaeology in general, but I recognise that this is not properly representative of either those involved or the world it explores. Whilst I very much like Gus as a presenter, and dare I say it prefer him to Tony, Natalie brings a balance and approach that enriches the experience. And we should not forget that she is a very capable and knowledgeable historian in her own right.

Lacy Oden

I love Gus! I love to hear him speak even if he doesn’t! And he always has the most eloquent answers. He’s awesome. I think he does a phenomenal job on the show as well :) I am glad Natalie’s book is doing well. She will be missed! I really like her sense of humor and I hope she returns!

Dorothy Frank

Loved hearing Anglo saxon spoken / sung. And hearing the lyre. Thank you I hope there will be more.

Matt Cummins

Oh, Gus, I know what you mean, but rest assured you are a very handsome man.

Elaine P

Gus is such a nice person (as are his interviewers...). And so thoughtful and insightful. He appears to be one of those people who you could probably talk to all day. He certainly brings a new appreciation for the wonder of archaeology, coming to it from the outside (so to speak). Greatly looking forward to hearing more!
