It's the morning of Day One in Shropshire...

While the rest of the crew have headed over to the main dig site, Derek and Lawrence have taken a brief detour to nearby Whittington Castle to meet a few characters.

In this video diary, we provide a revealing look behind the scenes while filming a key segment for the site's story.

Keep a look out for our Site Walkabout later in the day, plus another layer of data for our site map.

Looking forward to a weekend of tantalising Time Team treats

Andrew Calderwood

Derek and Lawrence make me smile! Their banter and energy really harken back to the same mojo given off by the characters in the original Time Team series! Love it! 😊

I've found the site on Google maps - east of the castle. I wonder if the River Perry previously came closer to the north of the site and along what is the northern boundary of the site?

JUDITH COOKE

What a sensational intro. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Graham Stokes

Good fun. Well worth the weight. Ahem. Enjoying the anticipation.

Dorothy Africa

I suppose tripping over bodies on the battlefield in full armor was a genuine hazard of medieval warfare. If you couldn't get up quickly, you might become the next body on the battlefield.

Ann H

To be honest, not so keen on watching reenacting but the castle and its construction specs would be interesting plus any related original documents.

Clive McIntyre

As Derek appeared at the start I was waiting for the giant whack-a-mole mallet to descend! Oh, ok, just me then

We'll exploring the story of the castle further in the weeks ahead and the main episode.

Causation. Reenacting feels too much like the "ancient aliens" of "history TV" in the U.S. Looking forward to the real history.

Steve Mikre

I greatly enjoyed this behind the scenes look at some of the filming. I hope this will be a regular feature on future Digs...👍

This reminded me of when Matt used to get roped into "role playing" -- say as a slave or a Roman legionnaire. I think seeing the set up for reenactments gives us Moderns a better idea of how complex a lot of ancient practices were. Imagine that fall on a crowded field -- the French casualties at Agincourt came from the crowded nature of their assault. I'd also like to say that I am really appreciating all of the effort the TT.2 crew are doing to integrate new technology while still preserving the personal touches that made TT.1 so beguiling. I am all for everything you are trying out. There is no such thing as "too much!"

Denise Jones

Nothing beats Phil as a Legionnaire.

Carl Johnson

That was exciting. Can't wait to see the full video of the fight.

Robert Boudreau

That was quite realistic, the fellow falling over the man laying down. With so many wounded and dead on a battlefield, it would have been a hazard which could end your life. Surely accidental in the reenactment, but realistic none the less.

Robert Wise

The intro was great … well done indeed! :-) Most excellent lack of serious-ocity! Good photography too!

David Boon

As knights those guys made great court jesters. I identified with the one requiring the XL chainmail.

Eggs Ackley

Phil never lost the chance to show off his legs🦵🦵😬

Trevor Rix

I would prefer that resources are expended on serious archaeology rather than actors having fun.

Michael Taylor

Lived it. Jealous though, I like a bit of sword fighting

Aliza Westenholz

Love this! As a historian I always enjoy attempts at accurate reenactments. Though TBH I don't think we can fully really appreciate what life was like in the past. But what it can do is is give us a better understanding, and sometimes solve practical puzzles of why they did things in a particular way. We learn much from reenactments on all levels. I think of it as taking what we know from books and finds, and seeing how it actually works in practice, or as close to as we can get.

Laura Rash

Really excellent beginning! As the man in red was pointing out.... it was all in good fun for this shoot. I definitely had a chuckle. But in the past, wearing 70-80 pounds of armor in the heat of summer, with flies, no easy access to cold beverages, showers, and our niceties of modern life, whilst fighting for your life... Sounds nightmarish for them.

Connie L Merchant

Always enjoyed those humorous bits on Time Team.

Patricia Amero

Excellent (as always) and provided great context for what is coming up. Thank you to everyone! 😎👍

Fun and funny behind the scenes☺️

Matt Cummins

Yes, young man, think about what you've done.

Elaine P

That trip/stumble was probably more authentic than not!

James Lee-Pevenhull

The coat of Arms is Fitzwarin. Lords of the marches. The Lee's of Stanton and Roden were underlords. From John Lee of Lee Hall, Pevehull came Ralph & Richard, identical twins. There funery effigy is in Shrewsbury Abbey.

James Lee-Pevenhull

Sir Ralphus Pevenhull died on crusade. He is depicted as a knight. Richard, on hearing the news of his brother's death, took to be a hermit monk. He is depicted as a monk. I am only the third Pevenhull and there has never been a Mrs Pevenhull.
