We are delighted to confirm that Time Team has returned to investigate the sarcophagus at Broughton Roman Villa, Oxfordshire.

The two-part premiere of this very special dig will be airing soon on the Time Team Official YouTube channel – keep a look out for all the details!

For those who haven't seen our Crowdcast event, here's an exclusive preview of what's to come.

It was a local farmer's chance discovery of a stone sarcophagus in the 1960s that ultimately led to the identification of the nearby villa, by Time Team's Keith Westcott.

Time Team visited in September 2021 to shed more light on the site, relocating the sarcophagus for a preliminary study. However, with only three days and a focus on the villa, a full investigation of the sarcophagus would have to wait.

In July this year, Tim announced our plans to return for a closer look...

Time Team Expedition Crew

This year's dig has provided the perfect opportunity to road-test a brand new format – 'Time Team Expedition Crew' – complementing the traditional three-day digs and the returning Time Team Specials...

The Expedition Crew allows us the flexibility to send in a small, streamlined team to investigate a site, feature or subject with a narrower, concentrated focus. It's the ideal approach for returning to an earlier site to resolve unanswered questions or address a particular anomaly in more detail.

We can't wait to share this with you – the first of several other projects in the works.

Patreon Exclusives

To accompany the release of the new Sarcophagus dig, there will be a range of exclusive Patreon content, including 3D models, an extended scene and more!

This is such a fantastic idea! And I'm glad that you have the funding to produce such smaller extensions! I'm excited to find out about that Sarcophagus!

Jon Zephanius

Oh my goodness that would be awesome! The Away Team...and it would be appropriate too, since Capt Picard's hobby and passion is archaeology!

Very exciting!! And is that a brand new rendition of the classic TT theme I hear playing in the background of the video?

Jill Bray - Author

Really enjoyed part 1and it's a brilliant idea to have an expedition team to look at smaller sites, or items in detail. It's so great to have the opportunity to see the sarcophagus again from last years dig.

James Leighninger

Impressed to see Lawrence and Derek being real archaeologists finally, and not just two guys interviewing and joking around with the others! Bravo, lads!
