As we make final preparations for this weekend's Devon dig, Dani Wootton catches up with local pottery expert, John Allan, for an overview of what we might find and what it might tell us.

John is a long time friend of Time Team, whose connections with the show stretch right back to its very beginnings, and we're excited to have him with us again.

This is a free-ranging conversation on all things pottery, so sit back and enjoy half an hour of unedited archaeology talk!

Look out for more posts over the next few days as the action gets underway. We'll be bringing you our daily updates, 3D models, Q&A sessions and more!

That was super interesting.John's knowledge is second to none

That was good. Interesting about the acidic beer/cider in the lead-glazed pottery.

We just went and found Time Signs on Channel 4 on-demand. You can see the seeds of Time Team in there. It's a recommended watch if you've not seen it.

Thank you, John and Dani. You just can't put a price tag on the accumulated experience and incredible knowledge of a local pottery expert, plus John is such an interesting and delightful person to listen to. I'm really excited to learn what this investigation can tell us about this beautiful and historic area of Devon. 😊

Seconding the recommendation. I watched it several months ago, for the first time and thought it was beautiful - maybe an odd word to use, but I can think of none better to describe it overall, and I actually found it quite moving in parts as well as of course very interesting. (The line in one episode about farmers 'never throwing anything away in case it came in useful later' made me chuckle, I come from a farming family and it's as true now as it ever was!)

Really enjoyed hearing an expert answering the types of questions I have. Well done Dani, great research into community questions.
