[VoidSea] Pre-Alpha Naval Mechanics - First Look at Reinvented Naval Combat (Patreon)

In a realm where magic abounds, only a fool would crew a ship with 60 souls, when 6 and some fancy arcanomechanical contraptions will do. Convergent advancements in biomancy, magitechnology, and occultomancy have made it possible for a single helmsman to steer, secure rigging, and furl sails from the comfort of their cockpit. A gunner can single-handedly load, aim, and fire a magitech cannon every six seconds. As for captains... they still exist; someone has to be the charming face the barkeeps and dock workers dream of.
We've been working super hard on a new project, and we're really excited to give you folks - our monster-hunting, item-crafting, loot-collecting patrons - a first look! VoidSea aims to reinvigorate ship-on-ship and crew-on-crew combat for 5e and 5.5e: gone are days of bookkeeping how many crewmates have survived the pirates' last broadside, gone are the days of trying to adjudicate how many flammable sea rats the wizard's fireball has hit, and gone are the days of complex, boring maths!
On the VoidSea, marine exploration evolved differently. Magitech, biomancy, and occult gifts have spawned smaller, nimbler ships that can be crewed by a single party of adventurers. Two theatres of battle—the normal 5 ft. by 5 ft. grid (the "Boarding Theatre") and a smaller scale 30 ft. by 30 ft. grid (the "Naval Theatre")— allow the precise location of players to be kept track of, while ships skirt around whirlpools, run over blockades, and unleash fusilades that turn enemy ships into sawdust. This month's release comprises two PDFs:
Pre-Alpha Naval Mechanics (this one!)
Pre-Alpha
These rules are as complete as needed for your first forays into naval warfare. The order of initiative, rules on ship movement, how players interact with components like cannons are all included. What we want to know is: is it fun? There is a feedback link in the document, so please give us your thoughts!
