“What do you mean the hill just ‘appeared?’ I have an entire wagonload of cabbages to move today and… and the hill is now eating all my cabbages! Do something!”
— Marcel Camphrie, Inconvenienced
Frequently mistaken for parts of the landscape, these massive omnivores spend over 99% of their lives sleeping and eating. Most of their energy is poured into the surrounding environment, causing rapid plant growth and drastic changes to the ecosystem. Enterprising competitive vegetable growers have destroyed their competition with marrows grown in the proximity of these enormous creatures, provided the marrow isn’t eaten on the rare times one of them wakes.
Symbiotic Sedentism. Known for inhabiting vibrant woodlands and groves, most people mistakenly assume that mosslaxes seek out these stands of trees, but the opposite is true. Rather than spend energy searching for a home, a mosslax lays itself down wherever is most convenient and gradually transforms the surrounding area to suit its tastes. Trees spring up to shade it, wild fruit grows more abundantly, and forest critters enjoy paradisical conditions in exchange for bringing a portion of their food to dump in the mosslax’s gaping maw.
Personal Ecosystem. Botanists have spent entire theses studying the unique ecosystem surrounding a mosslax; several species of flowers, mosses, and grasses have been found only near a mosslax. These rare specimens all appear to grow a few seconds after the mosslax is fed, and each has a minor narcotic effect not unlike catnip. Forest fauna learn which plants grow in response to the different foods the mosslax is fed, and feed it the sustenance that produces their most desired high. The only sure way to wake a mosslax up is inciting its hanger, and anything that stops it from eating usually ends up as its next meal.
Slow Moving Mass. A mosslax standing up is a rarity, and one moving long distances a singularity in any mortal creature’s life. However, a lack of food, deforestation, or the hunt for a mate may eventually incentivize a mosslax to wander. This wandering usually ends at a wide, flat area like a road. Main thoroughfairs have the ideal conditions for a mosslax to park itself and, once one settles in, it’s extremely difficult to remove. Many a roundabout has been built to accommodate one of these slumbering giants.
