“Trust me, nothing works up an appetite more than a long haul fight in your wild shape.”

— Archdruid Groaken the Grand

To wild shape is a powerful and dangerous process. Maintaining harmony between beast and person is crucial to mastering the art; a truth that archdruid Groaken once taught his pupils. Now he teaches that same truth, albeit as a tragic example of what not to do.

Wild Ambitions. A powerful toadfolk druid, Groaken the Grand was fascinated by the dream of a permanent, hybrid wild shape that combined the might of a great beast with the speech and abilities of the humanoid form. After a decade of researching lycanthropes and other shapechangers, he assumed a shape midway between an owlbear and his amphibious, humanoid form. The transformation was successful, granting him prodigious size and strength, the ability to converse with both beasts and humanoids, and retaining the ability to breathe underwater. As the years went on, the basal instincts of the beast gradually gained purchase; civility and reason deteriorated to be replaced by ferocity and instinct. Now all that remains is Growlbear, a cunning abomination driven by hunger and malice.

Hunger in the Dark. Lurking in the shadows that stretch out behind Groaken’s ruined home, Growlbear waits with gaping maw. He consumes anything his vast gullet can swallow: fish, pets, livestock, intruders, wagons, and, on one occasion, an entire census team. Once he makes up his mind to devour something, few creatures can escape the suction of his voracious hunger.
