“Honestly, it would be easier if they just ate the whole basin; I could write that off as a loss. When they leave it covered in bite marks, I have to deal with damage reports.”
— Todd, Chewed Out Manager
You would think that a creature made up of over 50 percent mouth wouldn’t have trouble eating things, yet the giblin still bites off more than it can chew. Their caves are surrounded by ambitious bite marks on all kinds of attempted meals.
Geothermal Gobblers. The majority of a giblin’s diet is composed of mineral deposits and volcanic rock left behind by igneous geological activity. They use these ingested compounds to create a rudimentary rocket fuel, launching themselves at interesting targets—a popular pastime among the giblin that frequently results in lost teeth and other injuries. The giblins don’t pay too much mind to lost teeth, since they grow new ones in a matter of weeks.
Metal Munchers. Because they’re constantly changing chompers, giblins are always teething. They regularly need something new to chew on and will spiral into a tantrum if their mouths remain idle for too long. Metal is the preferred tooth toy since it holds up well to volcanic heat and frequent crunching; the shed armour, weapons, and coin purses of hot spring guests make for excellent, reliable chew toys, and the softer the metal, the better. Unfortunately, this makes gold a favourite for the majority of giblins.
Delicious Deals. While giblins aren’t the sharpest teeth in the mouth as far as intelligence goes, they’re smart enough to make trades for quality chewing materials. Most keep a stash of old stolen “toys” they’re willing to exchange if traders don’t mind a few bite marks. The infamous Steam Peak Springs bandits went so far as to strike a deal with the local giblins, offering strips of lead in exchange for the stolen bags of rich vacationers. The deal was short-lived once the bandits realized the giblins liked the gold they were stealing better than lead. The giblins took the coins, and the bandits were left with a mountain of used towels and novelty souvenirs.
