“We managed to trap it in the dungeon, but it’s started to mutate, torture all the other prisoners and research specimens down there. In the past two days, it’s killed or brainwashed everything else in the hallway, proving itself to be the powerhouse of the cells.”

— Mito, Dungeon Guard

Dream magic is already poorly understood, but mixing it with power from beyond the planet creates something bizarre enough to give any oneirologist an aneurism. By mutating its DNA at will, the nucleye can rapidly adapt to resist the power of a raging storm, efficiently slaughter young dragons in their nest, or quickly run away when the mother dragon comes after it.

Dreaming of Stars. What happens when an eye tyrant dreams of the vast cosmos and the void between the stars? Do those night visions twist into gilded goldfish that swim among iridescent nebulas? Do they make the sky glisten with treasure on a distant, empty world? There’s no way for mortals to know where most of those dreams land, but on rare occasions, the dream is caught by a passing comet. The king-killer comet, a celestial body enchanted by a consortium of dragon-defying spellcasters, absorbed one of these dreams and became the nursery of the first nucleye. From this gestation was born an eye tyrant infused with cosmic radiation and magic designed to unravel draconic minds.

Dragon’s Bane. After a century of growth with nothing but the light of dead stars and the spells of ancient mages to guide it, the first nucleye returned to its progenitors’ home planet with a destructive purpose. From the moment it landed, it sought the utter dissolution of draconic society. Its power lay in patience, waiting for dragons to leave their nests unguarded before swooping in to inject the eggs with its viral cells. These parasitic cells consumed the embryonic wyrmlings until they broke out of the shells as a new generation of nucleyes.

Mutative Consumption. When no dragon eggs are available for reproduction, a nucleye contents itself with destroying the dragons themselves. The rays from a nucleye’s feeler strands pierce the draconic cells to rip apart the DNA within, and a nucleye’s gaze causes violently painful growths to bubble up and deform the dragon’s flesh, warping the shimmering scales with grotesque tumours. These attacks aren’t immediately lethal—a nucleye’s prey dies slowly, and those that survive often carry mutations for the rest of their lives. Even if a dragon kills a nucleye that attacks it, it can be left sterile from the encounter.
