“Now, before we sear our beautiful owlbear belly, we need to coat that pan in a lovely layer of oil. I’m just going to ask my gargoil to pour some—if I can find him, that is…”
—Jaimy Oiliver, Crystal Ball Cook
The kitchens of the combination wizard tower-restaurant Haute Cuisine are plane-renowned for their delectable fusion of the arcane and the culinary. However, magic—just like delicate ingredients—requires a certain deal of vigilance, a lesson hard-learned by an apprentice tasked with topping up the cruets. Mistaking animating oil for regular olive oil, the hapless student caused the glassware to come to life, accidentally creating the first gargoil.
Magical Mishap. Spellcasting slip-ups are a common occurrence at Haute Cuisine. Though they are more often than not highly disruptive to its day-to-day proceedings, such was not the case with the gargoils—guests relished in their interactions with the creatures, with some even asking if they could take one home. The restaurant’s management pivoted, and gargoils have been a staple in their repertoire ever since.
Oleagenous Omnivores. Gargoils persist on a strict diet of whatever they can get their hands on—leftovers, scraps, or vermin. Their bodies extract the oleous contents of ingested food and filter out impurities, rendering it into top-quality dressing oil. For this reason, many gargoil-owning chefs strive to keep their kitchens as spotless as possible, lest their vitreous companions inadvertently extract oil from roaches, spiders, or mice. It’s probably best to not think too hard about it.
Ingredient Infusion. Feeding a gargoil sufficient quantities of any singular aromatic changes the characteristics of the oil it produces, rendering it spicy, tart, or earthy. While a handful of staple ingredients produce consistent, delicious results, some visionary gastronomers experiment with feeding their gargoils more exotic substances, such as marrow, flowers, or culinary gold, to see what effects they produce.
