Possibly you are aware of the popularity of handheld console restoration videos. And if you've ever searched for one, you've probably been served up some that are quite clearly somewhat less than genuine. They all follow the same template - someone "finds" a farcically dirty Game Boy in a pile of rubbish, then goes through a series of often nonsensical and destructive cleaning procedures before the device is restored to perfect working order, often with obviously different internal parts.

Here are two perfect examples:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKWO7L3Gt24(GBA Restoration, 13.5 million views)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo9QsUN0n4A(3DS XL Restoration, 322,000 views)

Elliot from The Retro Future has been looking at these fake vids recently and we got together to produce a parody. We present: Restoration of ninTendo GameBoy GBA Destroyed | Repair & Restore DS Classic Sonyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpYgVXHCvG0

Someone posted this in the discord. My only hope, as a veggie and fruit gardener, is that those nicely grown beets are not faked too. If so, the last remaining thread of hope that I have for any truth remaining on the internet is shattered.

Ashens

I can confirm they are genuine radishes. (My girlfriend doesn't like beetroot much.)

NadetteNoire

Wow! They're huge! I thought they were beets. Tell her they look awesome!

Inept Singularity

Brown rice - the healthy choice for restoration!

Ashens

Techncially Brown Basmati, for anyone wishing to copy the method

Cathy Collins

Wow! The rice hack worked so well! You can’t even see the hole afterwards! You didn’t show us how you restored the box though!

Cathy Collins

I forwarded this to my bf and he said to me later, that was amazing wasn’t it? They did a really good job of that! I asked him if he actually watched the video- he said no he skipped to the end cos it was too long but Elliot and Stuart did an amazing job 😂😂😂

Ashens

Coincidence! Neither of us had seen that vid. Ours is mapped pretty closely to the stuff we're parodying - it was Elliot's idea to use rice instead of noodles / anonymous white powder because it would look so lumpy and stupid on camera. I ad-libbed pouring loads on.

Ashens

Amazing is a fair term, to be fair...

Leak

It probably was the use of the Windows startup sound on a totally broken, non-Windows device that reminded me... and the baking tray... and the rice... But I guess those are general staples of such videos; also, <strike>Elliot's</strike> your video definitely needs more egg... :P

Ashens

The startup sound was a last minute panic - we were supposed to have the power LED come on (as in the vid we were parodying) but failed to realise the unit doesn't have a power LED!

Oh, those jump cuts! Worthy of 5 Minute Crafts.

There's loads of thsse in other categories as well, 'restored' antiques that where obviously left in a tank of salt water for ages, with obvious crystals growing off them that would never survive handling.
