We return! With stuff I found when clearing out my dad's place!

(Not pictured: The 16 hiking compasses he had, despite the fact he quite literally never went hiking in his life. Six of them were bought from Aldi at the same time and never opened. I DON'T KNOW.)

Aw, Papas have the greatest old things bless them. Some cool things I still own from relatives that have passed on: An old army emergency radio that is hand cranked which has come in handy many times, and an old gas mask bag I have been using as a purse since the late 90s from my grandpa, and something that's pretty interesting from my uncle who passed. I found this old embroidered patch that shows a cartoon turtle on it and it says "Are you a turtle? You bet your sweet ass I am." I thought it was the weirdest and quirkiest thing, so I took it and sewed it on grandpa's gas mask bag actually, and it still is on it today. I was on the subway once, and an elderly man sitting next to me said "You're a turtle are ya?" I asked him about the patch. So back in WW2, a group of US army guys were stationed in Britain and found out that only members of some sort of drinking group would get discounts on beer. So they started to call themselves something like The Honorary Order of Turtles and these group of guys started to get discounted beer. It caught on to other members of the army and then it just started to grow from there. There was some sort of initiation once more people wanted to join this drinking group. It continued on once the members got home and initiating their friends and family etc and soon branched from the US to Canada. He said the turtle stuff was only given to people in this club so my uncle probably got initiated into this thing back when he was in the military.

Not going to lie, I want to see the compasses!

Don't worry, Ashens, we Americans think our college rings are huge and ostentatious too. They're only worn by people who have nothing interesting about themselves except which college they went to.

Graham Parks

You're thinking of the team ring in Ace Ventura. The villain's ring has its stone missing.

The Swiss card also has a small pin opposing the knife

Re: the hiking compasses: is it possible that at some point Aldi had a load of hiking compasses reduced to (as my mum would put it) flumpence, and your dad stocked up on them in case they came in handy for Secret Santa, gifts for relatives he didn't know very well, etc.? (This is the sort of thing I myself tend to do rather a lot, which is why I have almost a dozen packs of amusing novelty coasters and about two dozen glowstick whistles taking up space.)

That USC ring is confusing. Normally that kind of ring is given to athletes when they win a championship. But BS is bachelor of science, so the ring is just celebrating that the person graduated, I guess?

Theodore Lehman

Yup! Would've cost the person a boatload of money, too. The universities push them as symbols of collegiate pride or whatever.

That college ring, proof he was part of a secret society.... they'll come knocking for you soon to join them =)

Depending on how fancy it was, it may have just appealed to his love of gadgets. Proper lensatic compasses are like miniature surveying tools that collapse down into your pocket. Fun to play with. I think you can even still get them out of brass.

I think this wine bottle cutter thingy is actually quite common in Germany! At least I've seen a few of those here by now. But I agree that they are not really necessary.
