Can I get a refresher on how the dermis machine works? I think you have mentioned nanites, right? That would make sense given all the various procedures it has performed throughout your series

No they don't use nanites, the best way to explain how it works is from an earlier experimental stage passage from BS1 - The specially formulated mix of the shower’s stimulating water supply was not just soothing her body, it was invading her, for the cascading foaming water, contained a very powerful toxin that was instantly absorbed by the pores of her skin, sinking deep into her dermis, while the vapour filling her lungs, delivered a very powerful gene altering mix to her internal organs…

The tech has got more efficient since the first trials obviously, as they utilise DNA markers within the toxin, which can alter a person's DNA to match whoever they wanted... This works on the structure of bone growth, when you break a bone, your body reforms it to it's natural shape (with splints of course) but they found away of not using splints and in doing so have broken this code and can restructure a person through the DNA markers.
