Upper-tiered Pals - I keep fiddling with things, but can't settle on Owen's snap-gleefully-mean face. It's got to convey so much! Excitement, meanness, authority, but also... playfulness.

I've been redrawing it with some reference screenshots from the movie; in order to figure out the teeth situation: something I want to try and get better with. Jeez, they gave Nick some big molars!

Anyways I got lots of IRL work to dive into in a sec, so let me know which of the Owen faces feels right to you (I know it's only subtle differences, but follow your gut!), and it'll help save me hours of flip-flopping later tonight when I dive back in =)

It's also your chance to get a sneak peek at the reworked Judies too.

Hhhhhoooo boy, I'm a fan of C, if only because I like the idea of Owen leaning into the scary predator side of things

Rickochet

If you’re trying to mix all those together I’d say A-B has the most mix of emotion. C definitely has the mean intensity but not so much playfulness. B is my personal favorite tho.

Matthew Palmer

The eyes on B are what sells it for me- far more intense and the slight narrowing gives more solid emotion.

Fen Redwolf

I like the original, the squint of the eye is juuust right...

Xin

Definitely think 'B' does the job best. In 'C' Owen looks a little unsure of himself; his mouth looks the most snarly and aggressive, but his eyes/eyebrows don't convey the same intensity. As a result, this makes him look like he's not really committed. 'A' Looks good but the curve of his upper eyelid, the position of his iris and the moderate eyebrow position makes him look as though he's almost looking for/seeking approval or permission. It's playful and excited but not mean and/or authoritative. 'B' has the more playful and excited mouth from 'A', but the flat upper eyelid, the lower more angled brow and the more pronounced lower eyelid crease results in a more self-assured, focused stare, which, I think, conveys your intent perfectly. It's playful, excited, authoritative without being flat out nasty and he looks confident/ self-assured which makes the slight mean-streak land with more effect. Its harder to read whether he play-acting or being serious. That being said, it looks like 'A' is winning the vote, so who cares haha.

It's tough; having the eye ridge go over the eye feels right when I pencil it; but after looking at so much zootopia art and screenshots: it's not something they do! In the movie, the eye squashes and is rarely overlapped. It might be why the original's eyes bugged me to begin with; I was using cartooning shorthand, for something that might not work in that world.

Amadose

Yeah B might be my fav too, it's got just an edge of aggressiveness over A, which seems more playful.

Amadose

C's got that SNARL tho... I think I'm with you on B and A. I keep flip flopping between the two.

Amadose

Dang - all soild notes and thinking. I see all of that. You might have tipped it over for me onto B: I'll see what the vote looks like when I hit the eyes/

Xin

Sounds good ^^ You always make it look good so I'm sure it'll be great no matter which way you choose to go.

Tay

I see what you said, he does look better now! You not only made his arm buffer but also his shoulder and his lats, he indeed looks better! The v-shape buff body type does match with Owen quite well, I’m glad my tip helped xD Are the teeth going to be the same in all of them? Because I like the sharper teeth with big fangs of the original, it looks good on the bull hahaha I like the C face, looks more aggressive, but the original looks pretty good as well, I really love your facial expressions overall hahaha good job!

Diego P

A looks a bit longer which makes him look less like a fursuit and more like a predator in the hunt XD C is way too angry, he's supposed to be having fun

Danielfox

Aw dang! Haha. I figured C would fall short, especially given the prompt. For me, while C doesn’t show the playfulness (at least on the surface) I love that it feels like an immediate home-run by Owen at Nick’s request for him to be more mean. As June put it, he’s “leaning into the scary predator side of things.” I also assume we’ll see him ease back up and after care. Honestly I fucking love them all. Each one gives me the chills in a different way. I’m still going to be sold on the smirk regardless, especially given that it also provides Owen a slightly sadistic enjoyment in owning Nick and watching him squirm.

Amadose

Ha yyyyay! Love a 'can't go wrong with any of them' - at least I know I'm heading in the right direction! Next up - I need to figure out those middle panels 0_0 A tied-sheath closeup. How on earth does it worrrrk (I know I've drawn it before but I want to improve and get it looking right-er)

Fen Redwolf

Ha, alright, had no idea! All are great anyway and A would be my next favorite, so I'm good! ;D

Jeeves

I like them all, but I think C looks more... unambiguously mean without the playfulness? At least, that's how it reads to me, so I'd probably say "any of them except C, if you want to leave a hint of playfulness in amongst the meanness". If you feel confident in making him look truly hard-ass in that individual panel though, before using the surrounding panels for the playful context, C could absolutely work. :D

Amadose

I liked C a lot - but did figure people would read it poorly. I'll keep the sketch handy for the future; but I think in this moment, A or B has a more Owen spin to it.

Amadose

I'll try and sharpen them up a bit, but I want to fill his mouth out a bit more; get it a little more on-spec. It's tough, I've not really settled on a good tooth setup yet. So I'll keep fiddling then call it good and try again the next time our boy show's his chommers off. Thank you again for flagging the arm: I think it's looking a whole lot tighter now.
