Some interesting tips. Making dice rolls more of a spectacle is always great, especially when the roles is important and/or dramatic. But, rolling individually is also a good idea because it can help resolve some element faster. For example, initiative roll or saving throw for minor effects are usually something you want to get over quickly and letting the player roll in front of them can allows for that.

I just got permission to be a dice goblin on account of human history - this patreon membership is already paying for itself

This video was lovely, looking forward to more of this stuff! Among the wealth of "generic TTRPG playing advice" I don't think I ever saw one that solely focussed on the dramatic and theatrics of dice before despite it being a huge part of playing. Interested to see what else you've got cooking! Your "Mastering the Teach" video for boardgames from a while back was excellent as well. I'm sure there's lots of overlapping advice, but a new iteration based around TTRPGs (and perhaps specifically about transitioning from your 'starting system' to wildly different ones) would be something I'd be very interested in too!

Kevin Rademachir

Love the idea of using cups and having the players choose which cup is for which attribute. Thanks for the tips. Looking forward to more!

Your dice bowl wouldn't happen to be the kind that has "Waechtersbach, Germany" engraved at the bottom, would it?

latsöm

Excellent stuff here, will think hard about using. Question: Will you get into stuff specifically for video call RPG'ing? That's most of my TTRPG sessions, and as a n00b I'm not quite sure where to turn for help (because search engines are nigh useless these days), so some qualified tips from a (hopeful) professional would be great. About hidden rolls: Sometimes they are great, specifically if you notice a players interest in the game is tied to this specific roll. (example: "This damage roll determines if you'll end up comatose until you get to a place with good equipment, man the dice has been BRUTAL for you these past two hours haven't they?", and then the roll is bad and the player is just out while the rest of group is ok, and we're at least one session and a half away from getting to where we need to be for the character to be healed properly) Generally yeah the dice should be open, but sometimes the GM will want to fudge them for the sake of enjoyment for that player. (the example is from Traveller BTW, Mongoose 2E specifically)

Cup idea sounds fun. Would be a blast in a “roll the body” check in DCC.

Ryan Towers

I don't quite know if you are accepting questions or anything but I wished to ask are you up to hear suggestions on some cool RPGs?

Andrew Prentice

Love the idea of cups. I'm stealing that directly.

Max Brannan

After immediately suggesting to various friends and family to both subscribe on YouTube and join the Patreon, I started pondering use of cups for our first foray into Starhold (a scifi horror/survival game). Switching between open, secret and standard rolling for SH could create some fun tension. "Hey! What were you doing back there?" "Nothing. Don't worry about it... But stay out of there." Or... The cargo bay door opens smoothly, and the room is brightly lit. Just roll to Survey the Scene. But later... The cargo bay door is sticking a bit. That's odd. The lights aren't coming on. Roll to Survey the Scene... using the cup. Are you the brash or oblivious character, maybe operating with a detriment? Pull the cup up impatiently. Are you a nervous character who just knows you're the one that's gonna die first? Reach slowly and hesitantly. Or even another player interrupting by putting a hand over the cup. "Hey. Before you go in there, I need you to know..." or "Let me check the scanner" rolls openly "Its reading all clear," and then applies something that impacts the interrupted roll.

I will for sure be using bowls in the future, specially because I play a lot with my kids, and now we have the rule "if its not in the bowl it doesn't count" to get around the following scenarios: [Rolls a 1, dice falls on the floor] Ups it fell on the floor, have to reroll [Rolls a 6, dice falls on the floor] wow, amazing I will keep that I must admit at first I thought "How much can I really learn about rolling dice"... but I was wrong. Thanks!

edmo

Loved this - can't wait to see your next video and what kinds of GM/player advice you come up with in future! I'll be adding the bowl and cups to our upcoming game on Monday.

This is great. I'm virtual only right now, but still, plenty to apply!

Benj

Some great stuff here. I must say though, the swapping cups unseen thing would just annoy me, as I know it doesn't matter at all. Now, if the players can unlock limited ability to look first ... that's a whole different experience. Say one of the players (or a device on the ship) lets you see what the Weather die will be in advance, and you can switch it for one of the unseen dice, that's spicy.

That's a great idea on additional uses for the cups! I could also see a bit of a Monty Hall problem being implemented. Roll 3 die for an outcome with the players being able to choose a cup. If the players succeed on gathering information they can peek at a cup or two before choosing.

super clark

So who's going to review bowls to roll dice in? I refuse to settle.

gm_naahz

dig that roll dice with style tip!

Raytone

already giving a use to my pottery classes and 3d printer for bowls and cups.

colin phillips

This was way cooler than I expected it to be. Well done.

pablo codeina

Some very clever and easy to use dice tricks to spice dice rolling in my games. Well done ! As a side note, I love the production and the set.

Gage Peterson

Wow, these are weirdly good tips for dice rolling. You converted a skeptic 😄

braden ambrecht

I know this is a funny question, but what bowl would you recommend? I was trying out this ceramic bowl and sometimes the dice just pops right out.... Any suggestion?

Mitz

YOUR DICE CUPS ARE WET WHY ARE THE DICE CUPS WET, QUINN but srs tho i like the dice cups idea

kegna

I like rolling behind a screen during high tension scenes (like sneaking around a mansion), but having some or all of the rolls actually not represent anything. The occasional roll for no reason makes them act a bit more nervous and recklessly.

daniel schmitt

I enjoy those couple minutes before each game where everyone goes "ohhh, those are some cool new dice. Check out these I got." and we all pass our dice around to ogle.

Tom Broadhead

Yesterday I watched your review of Wildsea and on the strength of that I subscribed to this Patreon at the basic level and bought all the Wildsea things I could. Now this morning I come in and I watch this video about dice rolling and jesus wept. You understand! You understand so much and express things that I knew but didn't know I knew. And you showed me so many simple but very effective things I'm going to be building in to my games.

Damn it - some how posted this too soon and lost the big crescendo. Because of how good that one video is I'm going to put myself on the top tier of backing because you deserve it. I can't wait for more.

Cameron Dohrman

Here's a good one: In a dice pool system like Blades, rule that dice which fall off the table are removed from the result. If the situation requires a lot of care, have them roll on top of the rulebook and any that fall off don't count. Your players will start having the focus of a surgeon every time they roll.

Richard Guerin

I've joined the Patreon but for some reason I can't watch any of the videos in this collection on my laptop? The other collections all seem to work fine, just none of the videos in this collection. I get a quick flash of an error message that I can't catch and then nothing.

Inclusive Investor

This is a really fun start to the Patreon content! :D I'm excited to watch the rest, and I'm definitely going to adopt the central-receptacle rolling style and the Schrodinger's death check cup going forwards. I do really wish the subtitles on all Quinns Quest videos had been made (or at least quality-checked) by a human, though - it's very frustrating as someone who needs subtitles for accessibility.

Jeffrey Johnson

NGL, I do want to try the Bowl Method in the future! I mostly play ttrpgs with friends on VTTs but I have a local group where we are forcing ourselves to do everything without digital help so rolling dice in front of everyone has been great!

Vi Saunders

You've taught me so much and introduced me to so much. Thank you
