I've been doing a lot of thumbnail drawing for The Nutcracker graphic novel and really needed to make some 'finished' drawings so I did a few character doodles! Thought I'd share the process of this one here with you.

I'm using Kyle Webster's photoshop brush Tilterrific 2015 and Andy Brinkman's BRNK_2016_PaperTexture brush for the gray texture.

I like to start by just throwing some shapes and leading lines in that feel good. From there I'll decide what I actually want to draw and whether or not to scrap it in service of the idea I think would be better suited with a different drawing. 'Kill your babies' (AKA your precious drawings) is a phrase I think about constantly while sketching. If it doesn't work, scrap it. I like to throw in a toooon of leading lines and then just figure it out like a puzzle. Hopefully my anatomy skills from college are still helping, I haven't been going to figure drawing regularly although I reaaalllly want to start again. In this piece I really fucked up on the feet and I knew it every time I drew the shapes, so just kept redoing them until, basically, because it's just a sketch for me, I gave up lol.

in between these two screenshots I might have drawn 20 editions of the feet, exhausting myself.

I smoothed out the blacks and grays a bit with Andy's paper texture brush and made sure I had contrast where I wanted it most.

And it was just a fun doodle! Meaningless, other than wanting to draw an androgynous character in charge.

Here's another sketch I did about an hour earlier...
