Hey! I wanted to share my Riso 'Iron Song' September print PSD with you! I've been working a little differently, with a little messier layers, but all manageable inside groups of the colors I intend to print in. I like to work this way because it's a little closer to my normal digital workflow, making it more intuitive. I'm basically just using a round brush with different opacities (sometimes changing the opacity of the whole layer, sometimes just changing the brush) with my goal being to break up large sections/shapes of color by adding slightly different opacities/colors to make the final look more like watercolor...but it looks pretty cheap in photoshop before printing.

When I'm done with my image I select each layer and turn the hue/saturation levels all the way down, then turn the brightness/darkness down and make sure all my intended blacks are indeed black in my final greyscale file. For example, my blue line will usually look grey at the end so I make sure it's black. The machine reads files in greyscale and will push out 100% of the blue ink through the screen if I send it a black image. If you're working with a Riso printer each of these group layers would be their own separate jpeg, then usually added together into a PDF. I'd also add the final digital color image at the beginning so they know what you intend the final to look like.

Hope this helps! As always, let me know if you have any questions. If it's a question that I could make a whole post about and you'd be ok with that then I will!

Hello Natalie! I've recently become very curios abut illustration printed in riso, and I came across your work, I love it! It's very helpful to see the layers on the file. Without knowing it I was working on creating a similar effect with photoshop (with drawings layered in black and white that I would transform into color) so I feel that I'm discovering a new exciting world!!

Hello Natalie, I have a question if you don't mind me asking. When printing, for the individual color grey scale JPG, do you use the version with the Brightness/Darkness also all the way down? Or do you use the version where only the saturation is down? Let me know if the question doesn't make any sense. I did my best to word it. Thank you.
