Hi everyone,

Big update below- but first I want to let you know what’s happening with the Riso subscription tier. Please read this first half, especially if you are in the Riso Subscription tier!

For the next two months I’ll be in Japan and won’t be able to send out packages, however, I’ll still be making Risograph work. My plan is to send out a bunch of prints from my time in Japan when I get back in December, but I won’t be sending out anything for the next two months. So you’ll be receiving a big present full of prints in December, but nothing for October and November!

This is the only way I know that would keep the Riso tier alive while I’m away, but I understand it’s not for everyone. Please make your decision whether to leave or stay for the next few months before October 1st, which is when you’d be charged for the next print. I’m working on September’s print now and should have it out to you by Friday! That one’s still coming!

Here’s a simple breakdown of what you’ll get from me over the next few months:

October- nothing

November- nothing

December- a bunch of new work I made while in Japan, upwards of 4-6 new prints. And I’ll be sending them out ahead of Christmas.

Please let me know if you have any questions! And please make your decision before October 1st!!

The reason I’m headed to Japan is because I’m participating in a residency at AIR-Y in Kofu, Yamanashi for all of October and then co-organizing a two part Risograph gallery show in Osaka and Tokyo in November.

First, I’m very excited about my residency. I’ve been needing some time away to restructure and focus on my own stories. I’ve had to bookmark several personal projects over the years and I want to explore one fully during this residency.

I want this project not only to grow from being far away from my regular life, but also from the unfamiliarity and unease of being in a new city.

My residency is in Kofu, a small town in Yamanashi, about 1hr 40m from Tokyo by rapid train. I’m excited to be inspired by a small-sized Japanese city, rather than a massive one, which is not something I’ve really experienced in Japan.

I’m hoping to make a lot of work while I’m there, and do a bit of everything to expand on this personal project as best I can. At the end of my residency I’ll have a small exhibition where I hope to share sketches, paintings and Risograph prints from my time in Kofu.

My focus this month will be a continuation of what I’ve been doing in my Riso Subscription prints, only this time with a single narrative and continuous characters. I’ve been dedicating my subscription prints to women in scenes filled with magic and adventure, mostly as an excuse to pump out more images of women in fantasy. I want to explore a story I’ve been interested in for a while that also follows this theme, and see where it takes me. You might recognize this story/these characters from a zine I made a long time ago? More to come on this!

The second half of my trip is working on a Risograph gallery show called ‘Meet Me Here’ co-organized by @ns_julia and @stainperfect.

It’s a two part traveling show with the first event at RetroJAM in Osaka (where most of the prints will be made) and the second at Popotame, a wonderful comic shop in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. More on that to come as well!!

Thanks so much for reading and I can’t wait to share the prints I make for my residency and the gallery show with you in December!

Best,

Natalie
