Hello! I've aaalllmmlmost got April's Riso subscription print finished but wanted to share some process pieces for it first! It'll be called Desert Dreams, as a companion piece to my Island Dreams print below>> Thinking of making this another little series...maybe a deep forest or mountain scene next. What environment would you like to see me draw?

Here's the reference I pulled for this piece- I've been so inspired to make a high desert drawing since I took a trip to Joshua Tree with some friends in February. The landscape out there is absolutely stunning and every bush and rock has an interesting shape I'm not familiar with. Here are some photos I compiled together from one of my hikes in Yucca Valley.

And below are some photos I pulled from google and pinterest to help me get some better lighting and flower reference. I usually keep these images on the canvas as I draw or save them as jpegs and keep them on my laptop screen rather than on my cintiq screen as I draw...so I can look over for a refresh, but I'm not tempted to copy any one shape or composition.

When I started I just wanted to block in some real rough shapes so I used a big blue round brush and a big eraser to throw some lines around and cut in and out of them with the eraser tool. With the general composition in place I started with my scribbly line art sketch.

I was also looking at the Joshua Tree national park Instagram for reference and inspiration and found one about owls!! So I decided I needed to add owls in there somewhere...owls have definitely been ON MY MIND since I went to a raptor figure drawing event last August!

and then...I found...THIS WONDERFUL IMAGE and had to add the baby owls to the joshua tree as well!! I love how they seem so curious, and how one just has an eye peeking out behind the tree fronds.

Then I started on blocking out some of the large shapes with loose, squiggly line art. I knew I wanted a shooting star in there somewhere because we saw so many of them on our trip!!

I then turn the opacity down on the sketch, change it to have a blue line and start drawing on top of it.

and here's the final line art again! Excited to share these soon. Just a few more tweaks to the color and I'll be ready to send them out. If you paid on April 1st please make sure your address is up to date- I should be getting these out around the 20th!

This is so cool! I love the photo references and tips on how you use them. This is awesome. I’m so excited! Any tips for taking a trip out there?

I love this and can’t wait to get it! I just visited Joshua Tree I’d love to know, what is your process for laying out composition? How do you come up with this “frame” around the illustration? I love how it really holds the piece as a glimpse into this little world

I love this!!! I’m obsessed with cacti 😍 I bought the green island print at Seattle Comic Con, and loved your work so much I joined your Patreon! Can’t wait to see how the 2 prints look side-by-side. Love the idea of a mountain print next inspired by the PNW!

This is rad! I agree, would love to see a (PNW) inspired mountain inspired scene.

Would love a deep forest and mountain theme! Space and underwater ocean themes would be cool too :-o

Amazing!! Hmm I'd say go in the fall (november-december) or late spring (after the rainy days, maybe April-June) to beat the heat. Other than that just bring lots of sunscreen, hats and make sure the airbnb has a pool or hot tub!! It was soooo nice to take a dip in the hot tub in the early morning as see the snow capped mountains in the distance. We didn't get a chance to explore too much so I don't feel like I have good recs for locations but Yucca Valley was perfect for us!

Finding the composition is always a different experience for me- I like to switch it up, basically, but I usually start not thinking about the composition in full at the start. I like to focus on main themes and pieces I want to add into the drawing before I think about the entire image. So for this I started with the Joshua Tree in the foreground, then decided I'd like to add them in the middle ground as well, made sure the classic high desert rocks were included in the middle ground and forgeround, then added the mountains in the background. I had to move some pieces around to make them fit nicely in the composition, but it's usually very spontaneous and just a process of building up my fg/mg/bg with dynamic shapes. Hope this helps! A less planned composition makes the experience much more fun for me, but it does mean I have to do a lot of editing along the way!

Oh my goodness thank you!!! I really love these two side by side, I want to do so many of these now, it's really fun to scratch that sense of adventure itch with these drawings.

Oh!! PNW, you say!! Haha well then I'll have to spend a little more time out there, I feel like it's really the only part of the US I haven't spent a decent amount of time in yet. I want to fix that!!
