As another non-gamer, I too was not expecting Joel's death in this episode. I am gutted. The Joel/Ellie dynamic was the heart of the show for me. Guessing that the rest of the season will be Ellie's revenge- and like you I hope she rips Abby apart- slowly.

NO GAME/SHOW SPOILERS FOLLOWING: Whew! so you made it to the big moment lol as someone who played the game I personally love all 3 characters equally (Joel, Ellie, Abby) but i think where the show sort of flubbed a bit was revealing the reason why she did it so early. In the game you don't find out why she killed Joel until the halfway mark and I think the impact hits different/reasoning plays out better to make you more sympathetic to Abby. That being said I'm interested to see how they develop her here in the show. I WEPT during this death scene in the game lol. Either way prepare yourself because this season is going to be a JOURNEY!

I know people are mixed on how much they revealed in this episode in comparison to the game but I think they did well while giving context to the wider audience that will ultimately not stick around to wait for reasonings. Knowing Kaitlyn Dever (Abby) had to film that final scene 3 days after her Mum died made it so much more heart wrenching. I can't even imagine trying to film that under that condition. I am very interested to see how the rest of this season plays out.

Yeah I would imagine they probably have something cooked up in the writers room to explain why things were revealed in episode two. I always try to keep an open mind as adapting a game (or any sort of media) to a movie or tv show is always going to require story changes. We shall see!

We can hope. We can dream. I’m assuming we will also be getting a lot of Joel flashbacks, especially to whatever happened with Eugene.
