The king is another Olivia Coleman moment. The actor is Stephen Fry and also a pretty big deal. He’s notoriously a homosecckkkssuuuall himself. He is also the voice of the headmaster on the PA in Heartstopper.

It was mentioned a couple of times that the Secret Service knew about their relationship, as well as other characters in the movie. So some people did know. Also, you talked about relatability, but a vast majority of LGBTQ movies does center around ordinary people living their average lives. I don't think you can name a lot of them about a prince and a son of a president. So relatability in that aspect wasn't really what they were going for, but it does still tackle certain issues that LGBTQ people go through. I think it's a really cute, sweet movie with a fun concept.

It was definitely fine for me! I wasn't seemingly captured by the two leads like everyone else, but it was still an enjoyable watch nonetheless! But as I suspected before the movie began, it was about two chiseled models lol

GroovyGadget

Well, it is Hollywood, so characters do tend to be portrayed by attractive actors. Hey, it's eye candy for me, so I'm not complaining lol!

I read the book multiple times and adored it. But damn I really did not care for this movie. They changed so much and cut so much out of the story that it just felt like a speed run. I never believed in this Alex and Henry's relationship, they had almost no chemistry. In no world is that the Alex the books described. I think i might have enjoyed it as a shlocky romcom if i hadn't read the book. But i just cant get past all the changes and how little of the book is in this. I guess us gays can have garbage hallmark level movies now too so thats a win lol.

Awww I loved this movie and glad i waited to watch along with you! The waaay you had me cackling tho 💀

nicksaysboo

This movie took me tf out, lolol. It was cute tho.

See, this is why you should judge the movie on its own merit instead of comparing it to the book. Movies and books are two completely different mediums. The director explained in an article why he made certain changes and it made sense. And lol, if you don't think they had chemistry then you really need an eye doctor lol

nicksaysboo

As I always say, different strokes for different folks! Everybody has something for them, and that's okay! 🙂

Domino

That’s not how this works lol. You don’t adapt something change a bunch and tell all the book people it’s fine because this is it’s own thing lol… The director should have made his own story then. He’d do well on Hallmark. If you thought Taylor’s acting was good I cannot help you lol.

I was waiting to see if someone I watched would react to this. I'm glad you did so I could watch the full length. I'll preface this by saying I read mostly M/M fiction (though I have not read this book) so my expectation were pretty low as in general I'm let down my movies that are book adaptations, especially if it's a book I have read and love. This movie gives me hope. There are several books and series that I've read that I'd love to see in movie form, but never felt it would be done justice due to the relationships being between two men, even if the murder mystery parts were top notch. btw I HIGHLY recommend the Adrien English series by Josh Lanyon, (one I'd dearly love to see in movie form, if done right). Anyhoo, about this movie. it was a light hearted romance, and like any (heterosexual) romance you have to be willing to overlook certain things and not focus too much on realistic scenarios. Sex scenes are rarely reality based, so I've learned to take gay sex scenes (in books) with a grain of salt because, and this is coming from an asexual woman, I'm not sure how realistic the scenes are, I'll take what this movie gave us. I'm sure there was more prep than shown and leave it at that, being happy that they did a full ass sex scene between two men. Otherwise, I really loved the two characters, and the supporting cast was great as well. As to your stipulation, I didn't think they came off as obviously gay, or suspicious, (before they actually starting dating and hanging all over each other) and I'm pretty certain the Secret Service and guards know all the secrets and so it's a given that they were aware of the situation.. I think they both were shown to date women and most people just take that as the truth, either not wanting or willing to look further into it. What I really liked (and I'm not sure I can explain well) but this did not seem just like a 'gay' movie, but like a Romantic Dramady that happened to be about two gay men. If you get that. It seemed normal and not sub-genre. At least it had a happy ending, (though Texas turning blue in a national election is the most unbelievable thing about it) and that is my one requirement in the books I read. You can make me cry as much as you want during the book, but there better be a happy ending a the end of the book, or series. It's funny, both actors reminded me of other people, Alex looked like some actor but I can't remember their name and Henry had a John Barrowman smile. Overall, I really liked it!

Domino, taking a 400-page book and translating it into a 2-hour movie is a long, difficult, tricky process that requires some changes. The certain things that work in a book is just not gonna work in a movie, and vice-versa. This has always been the case when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations since the beginning of cinema. So this is nothing new. Anyway, this movie received generally positive reviews, so the director did something good here. And I don't know what you're talking about because Taylor Zakhar Perez did a great job, and had great chemistry with Nicholas Galitzine. I don't exactly know what you were expecting.

I thought this was a fun Rom-Com...I may have related a little bit ;).

nicksaysboo

We must start keeping a list of these moments, for real 😂😅

nicksaysboo

I haven't read the book, but yeah I personally didn't feel invested with the relationship. I didn't find the acting bad, I thought both actors did a fine job with their material, no issues there. But for me, the emotional ask of the movie which was investing in the turmoil between the two characters, didn't feel earned. They went from hating eachother, to a fast montage of them texting, then all of a sudden they were betrothed. It was just rushed to me, I didn't have enough time in the early stages to grow with the relationship.

nicksaysboo

Texas turning Democrat was truly the biggest leap in this movie 😂 Sex scenes in movies always bug me tho. Straight and gay, it just becomes so "polished" that it temporarily removes me from the moment.

nicksaysboo

YOU ARE SECRETLY DATING THE PRESIDENTS SON TOO?!

Ofbricks

In some universe out there...this is correct.

GroovyGadget

Hmm, I didn't see it that way at all. They hated each other, but it was due to a misunderstanding. Once they talked it out, they got along throughout the months of texting each other, especially through a creative montage that made them look like they were in the same rooms when they actually weren't. You should probably re-watch this movie with a different perspective. If you look closely, you could see Alex slowly falling for him. Before the New Year's kiss, he was kinda in denial about liking him, and then after the kiss, he was wondering about his attraction towards him, and then once he saw Henry again, it was like he was in a romantic trance. When they kissed in the Red Room, everything after that was like an explosion of passion and romance. Meanwhile, Henry have always liked Alex since they first met, he was just pretending that he didn't like him.
