You should watch Eyes Without a Face - les yeux sans visage de George Franju. One of the few French horror movies from the 60s. And maybe the only one… You can tell Almodovar saw it. And his film is also based on a famous French novel.

The sexual assault on Norma is intentionally ambiguous. It's never said outright but Norma was institutionalized for years after her mother's death and had just been released. She didn't know how to say no to Vincente because she didn't really understand what was happening. Did Vincente intend Norma any harm? No. Did Norma perceive it as a rape? Yes. So is it a rape if the victim sees it as one but the the perpetrator meant no harm? I don't know but it's just a sad situation all around. Robert was absolutely insane. He didn't turn Vincente into a woman, he turned Vincente into his wife. One with skin that wouldn't burn, a perfect version of her that needed no improvement. Vincente was subject to 6 years of constant operations and experimentation until Robert was satisfied.

That's what I was thinking! It was very ambigious, and very hard to really get a feel for what I was supposed to take away from that scene!

I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. It was so good. I loved it!
