Yes, the movie was filmed in 2002 Yes, the person who made it was on drugs While the movie leaves a lot of unanswered questions, I really enjoyed the overall narrative. My interpretation is that a part of his damaged mind remembered and fought to get vengeance by destroying his brother's world and a demonic entity helped make it happen. Not sure if you caught it but the play at the end revealed that when they were kids the brother was jealous of all the attention Dennis was getting and attacked him with a baseball bat while Dennis had his eyes closed for prayer. It wasn't an accident or a fight, it was an assault. I'm sure if you had watched it on your own without being distracted by having to react you would have picked up a few more of the details.

From my perspective, this is an artistic, psychological horror story trying to illuminate the world of mental illness. Dennis seems to display the mannerisms of an autistic man that, apparently, became mentally handicapped from brain damage due to being punched down the stairs as a child. Autism isn't something you can develop from an injury, it is a genetic marker that you are born with and cannot obtain any other way. Also, movies and real world medicine are wonky in that, in the real world, being "unconscious" for any length of time beyond a few seconds is very very bad. Most people don't get "knocked out" cold for a solid hour from minor blunt force trauma to the head like a punch or bonk! A few seconds maybe, possibly a minute. Anything longer than that and you have to assume they've either suffered severe brain damage or have fallen into a coma. I have heard stories of people being injured so badly in car accidents, burning buildings, and severe hypothermia that they would wake up in the hospital several days later, but for very serious, life-threatening, problems. However, it is clear that his inability to articulate his words made it impossible for him to share what was really going on inside his head. As someone that works with people with special needs as a living I can tell you that their minds are vast and can display remarkable moments of acute intellect when you least expect it. It doesn't matter how limited their ability to communicate may be, we may never truly know what the world inside of their head is really like. Dennis, from a scientific perspective, seemed to be plagued with undiagnosed schizophrenia. It became more apparent to me that this may be the case when his worlds were colliding. He could no longer discern fantasy from reality and the movie's editing seemed to capture that feeling of never knowing whether he was dreaming or awake. Which is exactly what Dennis was talking about throughout the movie. Unfortunately another factor with schizophrenia is the talking to an entity that isn't really there, but is very real to Dennis. Dennis completely believed that a demon crawled inside of him and has been possessing him his entire life. "The Evil Within" I believe is supposed to represent our mind and how evil your world can feel when your mind has become fractured.

It's funny, when the guy mentioned him being knocked out for "only an hour", I remembered how the character of Giles in Buffy is known for constantly getting knocked out to the point it becomes a running gag. I had looked up if that was a thing that was normal, and it is NOT. Apparently if you get knocked unconscious, anything over maybe 3-4 minutes is likely brain damage.

This movie was not for me. I didn't really get it. The only part I liked is I thought Fredrick Koehler who played Dennis did a really good job.
