I loved your commentary on the entire series. Cody from Horror Bandwagon gives a really good explanation of each episode and which Poe stories inspired Flanagan.

i LOVE this show so much!!! again, i recommend watching horror bandwagon, or researching edgar allen poe, because it will make so much more sense!

I was hoping against hope that it was going to turn out Lenore wasn't going to the legitimate daughter of Freddy and she would be allowed to live. The integration of Poe's actual prose and poetry into the script was absolutely seamless. So well done!!

The entire show pulls from various Edgar Allen Poe stories and poems, including the titles of the episodes and the way everyone dies. All the themes of poes works were present in this: madness, death, etc. the characters were named after poe’s characyers. The burying someone behind a wall thing, Poe did it a couple times in his stories.

Flanagan did an impeccable job on this, even if someone isn’t familiar with Poe’s work, doesn’t matter because it works on its own. But if anyone is familiar with his works then it just becomes fun Easter eggs and tie-ins.

As for the Egyptian thing, idk if that was a part of one of Poe’s stories or what. (I haven’t read his complete works and the ones I have, have been a min). But I do know that it was a constant motif throughout the episodes, I guess foreshadowing Madeline’s death and being symbolic of the ushers thinking of themselves as royalty and god-like, striving for immortality but ironically sacrificing the very thing that would’ve made them truly immortal, their bloodline

Oh and Verna (the “demon” “angel of death”) is an anagram for Raven. Poe’s most infamous poem, the words Nevermore and Lenore (the granddaughter) are repeated throughout it.

not sure if you're a fan of rewatching shows but if so i recommend you do this one at some point. on my third watch currently and i'm still seeing new little things each time, this show is full of easter eggs and hints that are fun to find!

Lavender Violet

I came here to say exactly this. I loved their reactions and Cody's explanations were super informative.

This was such a good show. I have seen everything that Mike Flanagan has done with the exception of some shorts and student films listed on IMDb. I made it a point after Hill House, which was the first thing I saw that he did. I enjoyed everything with the exception of The Midnight Club 😬. This is one of my favorites along with Hill House, Doctor Sleep, and Midnight Mass. Hush and Gerald's Game were great as well. I will give anything he does a chance.

I will probably rewatch it at some point in the future!

The Midnight Club is the one I forgot! I heard that was very mid.

nicksaysboo

I will have to check it out. That Cody is a whiz!

I finally finished this and I'm sad to see it go so quickly. Such a great show and great cast. Sad about Lenore, but knew it was inevitable. I can't wait to see what Mike Flanagan does next.
