Ricky Gervais has a brilliant ability to balance comedy and tragedy. This series is genuinely beautiful and sad in equal measure.

Alexander Bond

Or you could say it's overly sentimental nonsense with nothing remotely new, interesting or insightful to say, because people moaning about how sad they are and having blatantly obvious and hackneyed dialogues about the meaning of life is much easier than writing comedy. It's also not remotely entertaining.

Neil Jarvis

Erm, okay. I’m not sure how you define comedy and drama but it’s certainly questionable. This is a beautiful show that understands pathos, tone and the impact of light and dark. Make someone cry and then throw in a genuinely funny joke and the emotive response to that joke is tenfold. Conversely, have them laughing and then drop in a moving scene its impact is ramped up. It’s why the likes of the later episodes of Only Fools And Horses worked so well. If your world revolves around someone and then one day they simply don’t exist - like Lisa, in this - then this is far from ‘overly sentimental’. And this was never marketed as a ‘comedy’; it was deemed that by many due to Gervais’s presence. Sure, it’s funny but so, at times, is This Is England and that features a racist and violent skinhead.

Alexander - someone is salty their show didn't win :')

Julie

Just like Derek. Though Derek has more funny sequences, it still has sad ones.
