Really enjoyed that thanks Josh, I remember it being one of my least favourites when I was younger, probably because it wasn't creepy and nobody died. Yeah I'd have taken the cash as well! especially since they weren't insisting on knowing HOW it was done, so nobody should have got into trouble anyway.

as an adult, this is the episode i think of first when I think of Jonathan Creek. not sure why but probably the first episode i watched as a child.

Will

Yeah same for me! This and The Three Gamblers.

Jake Francis

This is one of 2 episodes (the other being House of Monkeys) that I specifically remember watching as a child. I was staying at my aunts as my parents were away, I remember we got chinese food for dinner. This was back in 1998, crazy that it's so vivid for me. I would've been 10, which IMO is a great age for this show.

I don't know if he is shown up in anything else you have watched (he has likely been mentioned at least), but the critic is played by Bob Monkhouse, who was a comedian, actor and presenter. He actually died a few years after this, but he had been working since the 1950s! When I was a kid, he was kinda known as a bit of a joke, but at this point, people had really started to respect his longevity in showbiz and was really beloved! It is actually really cool to see him in this, as it was probably a big deal for the rest of the cast to work with him! Great reaction!

It’s much more rare for buildings to be demolished here than in the US

That Mr. Gregson twist was fucking wonderful. Really clever writing 😂 😂

Monkhouse was an avid collector. He collected comics and comic original art. It was said that he had a Frazetta original. He also collected video tapes he liberated from BBC archives. He was a personal friend of William Hartnell the 1st Doctor. It was hoped by fans that when he died that some lost episodes would turn up. But alas no.

That tour guides accent is insane. She sounds American, then English, then Irish all in the same sentence. I'm confused as hell.

Ok awesome bud, I have heard his name mentioned before but I don't remember from what other show.

It's only watching this episode again with you that I realise why it annoyed me so much. It doesn't make sense! To set up the thing with the door, the babysitter (who has already been given her notice and is moving her stuff out of the house) needed to have unmonitored access to the painting for several hours. There's no way the insurance company would allow that. At a bare minimum, they would want the room to be locked and/or some kind of CCTV covering the entrance. And what weird kind of canvas is it, so that it can be curved so tightly (to get it into the door) without losing half the paint?

It was Marjorie Dawes.

The craziest thing about the previous episode where the guy had two families on one income is that he was supporting his two families AND his co-worker who pretended to be himself in the states. They were sharing the income!!
