The “Morning has broken” song that they were singing is what many of us had to sing each morning in our assembly at school. We were legally required to have assemblies where the entire school came in and we sat in lines according to our year group at the beginning of each day. In year 11 (age 15-16, last year of High school) we got to sit on benches and felt so privileged lol. I don’t think it is still legally required to do now though as my kids high school only do an all school assembly once a week (the primary school was daily though). I also feel like there might be a lot of resistance to the requirement of Christian based assemblies at schools that aren’t Church of England ones.

So having looked it up, apparently UK state funded schools (excluding Scotland) are still legally required to have daily school assemblies/collective worship, that should be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character. I didn’t think it was a legal requirement anymore based on my own kids high school where they are non denominational and don’t preach any religion. So although it’s still legally required, many schools just don’t go along with it and it seems there aren’t any consequences to this.
