I assume the ‘say no to trident’ on the van is referring to the UK’s nuclear weapons programme which is called Trident.

Its Onslow, not Hanslow! But yeah he's a good natured and chill slob who will always be more popular than the Hyacinth's of the world! The show is called Keeping up Appearances because Hyacinth tries to project that she's this wealthy, upper class woman of refined breeding when in actuality she's from a working class background! Its not so much that Hyacinth is competing with Violet, its that she uses Violet's success as a way to push that fantasy of her own success! She thinks it reflects well on her! Never mind the fact that Violet and her husband are just as dysfunctional in their own way as Daisy, Onslow and Rose are! When Hyacinth said ''you'd think Onslow would have tidied up for the christening'' that shows how far she takes the appearances thing because nobody but the immediate family and the neighbour was going to see the yard and yet she wants him to clean it up to make it look presentable for such a special occasion! Somebody else has already pointed out what Trident means! You're moving on to season 2 now, can't wait for the next reaction!

The late eighties and early nineties, when this was made, was the heyday of the New Age traveller, there was a big moral panic at the time over the whole subculture because of its associations with the illicit rave scene and drugs, and there was all sorts of legislation passed shortly afterwards that caused it to decline quite a lot. So what we have here in a strange sort of way is a little pop culture time capsule.
