https://youtu.be/3WQrLuaMBMw This is the jingle Alan was singing before interviewing the kids. Pearl & Dean are an advertising company for a lot of cinemas across the UK, so (unless you're going to one of the major chains like Odeon or Cineworld) it's not uncommon to hear this before seeing a movie, it's an ident bumper basically saying "The following commercials were brought to you by Pearl & Dean!" As a side note, the comedian Milton Jones has a gag referencing this, he talks about his Grandma Pearl and Grandad Dean...or as he knows them, Gran and Granpa-paa-pa-paa-pa-paa-pa-paa-papapa...

Interesting question about whether Alan's show would genuinely lose viewers in real life. To be honest, it descends into chaos so routinely that it probably would attract a cult audience up until the point when the network axed it out of embarrassment, or else used the chaos as a marketing gimmick. When it comes to his rudeness, one of the real-life people Alan's character is modelled on, Richard Madeley, pretty much built a TV career out of people wanting to hear the astonishingly tactless stuff he'd say to guests unwittingly, with no apparent sense of self-awareness. In fact, somewhere online there used to be a list of Richard Madeley quotes that are absolutely indistinguishable from Partridge lines; I screenshotted it at the time so I can admire the best ones in wonder every now and then: [Interviewing Keira Knightley]: "Can we get some make-up, please? Get Keira looking like a crack whore. She'd make a good crack whore." [When a guest breaks down in tears after meeting the paramedics who saved his life in a motorbike accident]: "Stop crying! This is supposed to make you happy! Anyway, after the break, the biggest dog in the UK. And he really *is* big. Don't miss it." [Talking to a child whose spinal injuries require him to wear a head & neck brace]: "Hey, you look just like Buzz Lightyear!" [Interviewing a dwarf]: "Do you find that people patronise you? That means talk down to you." [Interviewing a man wrongly imprisoned for terrorism]: "Do you notice much of what's changed during your eighteen years in jail? Cars have five gears now, for example." [Interviewing a wildlife expert]: "So, are you telling me elephants are *not* born evil?" [Interviewing an anorexic teenager]: "Five stone! That's concentration camp thin, that is." [Referring to his wife, Judy]: "When me and Judy were trying to conceive, I used to douse my balls in icy water before intercourse." [Referring to a famous English footballer]: "So he suffers for us. He bears our pain in the most public way possible. He serves a timeless human need, one that goes back long before the time of Christ. Perhaps this has always been Paul Gascoigne's destiny."

The VHSs of this series only had 3 episodes on each of the 2 videos you bought separately. The 7th episode was never really referred to as episode 7, it was always Knowing Me Knowing Yule - which you had to buy separately! So it was about £40-£45 to buy it on VHS, as a teenager.

...This episode was actually the first time I ever saw Alan, when it 1st aired. I saw the intro, then saw the song and dance at the beginning and thought "Wow. What an annoying looking chat show!" And just switched it off. (I was only 13.) It wasn't 'til I'm Alan Partridge I took an interest.

The monkey-puppet guy was referencing various light-entertainment comedians from the 70s and 80s, particularly a guy called Keith Harris who had a puppet called Cuddles The Monkey, as well as a radioactive-waste-green puppet called Orville the duck. Orvile wore a nappy all the time, never grew out of it, and Harris never weaned him off it, which is just bad parenting, and Cuddles the Monkey was a terrifying force of nature whose shtick was to violently assault any fellow guests whenever Keith Harris went on a chat show. Keith Harris got away with some genuinely insane stuff while using Cuddles the Monkey as a prop, just pure ultraviolence. Orvile was the bigger star though, and had a 'cute' voice and big sad eyes which probably helped him appeal to kids. But looking back he was just a fat, balding duck who couldn't stop shitting himself. The last thing I'd want to do with Orville is stick my hand up his arse and go on live TV. It is very odd some of the things that became massive in this country back then. Also, there's a bit at 22:35 in this video - when Alan's complaining about the higher-ups at BBC2 who come in before the filming and tell him what he can and can't say - that reminded me so much of when Karl Pilkington gets annoyed about something, eg. sluggage clogging up his piping, and starts tripping over his words in his anger, then ends by saying 'get out!'. Just made me laugh :)

Saul

Hey Josh, I don't watch chat shows either. I've never understood why they're so popular, genuinely. First of all, watching people sit there trying to be entertaining just makes me feel awkward and slightly stressed, and secondly I don't think there's any reason why we should expect celebs to be any more entertaining than anyone else. I can understand liking certain celebs, admiring their acting, or singing, or whatever. But there's no reason why the stuff they talk about should be interesting, and most of the time it isn't. Maybe celebrity just isn't quite as magical to me as it is to some people, because chat shows are obviously really popular. I'm just missing something there. The one exception to the rule is Conan O'Brien, but even then I only ever watch his show to see him. The guests just get in the way, unless they're fellow comedians like Bill Hader, Bill Burr, etc. or a handful of celebs who are just naturally funny, like Jeff Goldblum. Chat shows are just a huge, huge genre of TV that I've never really understood.

Alan's "Get out!" really reminded me of Karl ranting as well! I know exactly what you mean.

I can breathe a sigh of relief now! I remember back when KMKYWAP was first suggested but sadly shot down by a majority of patrons, I was disappointed we wouldn't see your reaction to Alan's on-air mishap at the end of this episode. Moreover, I was worried because people were just suggesting various clips to watch so you could get the gist of the show, and that clip was included. It would have been a real loss if your reaction to that moment was just the clip alone without context, or without seeing how the rest of the show went. Glad to see that it was such a surprise to you, and I'm especially glad you've enjoyed the show as a whole. Honestly, I was sure you would, I have no idea why this series was looked down on by Alan fans when it was first suggested.

Haha I thought of Karl as soon as he said that as well 😁 I used to love that green duck Orville when I was a little kid, seeing (and hearing) it as an adult JESUS CHRIST.

I was always a bit surprised as well, to me this is easily as funny as I'm Alan Partridge. I always thought it was a shame that Josh didn't get to watch this first because it gives IAP a lot more context.

Christ they could have come straight out of Alan's mouth! You could probably find another pile of quotes from him belittling his wife on live TV.

Ducati
>>94342014

I was sure you were going to end that with "needless to say, we had the last laugh"

Good point man. I totally agree the talk shows are only good if comedians are on it or actors who are funny, otherwise they just seem awkward.

@Belladonnic ... try watching some clips of Mr Blobby 🤷‍♂️😬 It's like our childhoods were one long cheese dream

Ben

@Chris H Yeah I remember when the first reaction to IAP came out people were saying "It will get funnier when you get to know the character", it was a bit frustrating knowing he could have done that with KMKY. Anyway, it won in the end! @Ducati Haha that would have been a better end to my comment I admit! @Josh I hope you get a chance to see more Alan in the future!
