I thought that seeing as the second Freddie is exactly the same as the original Freddie, he'd have ended up fancying Guillermo not himself!

you feel bad for Guillermo until you remember hes an accomplice to mass murder

Balkyne

The original Freddie didn't have the option of himself

Saw this episode and the first thing that came into my head was "o cholera czy to freddy fazbear"

My instinct is that if you end up with an exact copy of yourself, the last thing you'd want to do is spend the rest of your life with the insufferable prick - I already spend every waking second with myself, and the idea of another me bouncing all my highs and lows back in my face like a mirror...Red Dwarf got it right I think, it'd drive you insane.

Well that was a proper Know Your Meme rabbit hole I feel a tiny bit dumber now

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Haha exactly, it just doesn't make sense to me that he'd be attracted to an exact copy of himself. I know they just wanted rid of the character before the end but still :D Then again, it's hardly the most realistic show so I'm not sure why I was overthinking it 😅

I found this one of the most disturbing episodes. Yes, we've seen people being killed by the vampires from the start, but for someone's entire personality and memories to be wiped and replaced is psychological horror territory we don't see much else of in the show. The existence of some sort of afterlife was established in an earlier series; unlike Marwa, at least the vampires' conventional victims presumably get to live on (in some capacity) as themselves. Still, with the inconsistencies and retcons we've seen elsewhere in the show (I don't mean to bash it, I still find it very funny), I suppose we can hope the original Marwa is doing well in some realm.

Very true, it was alot different than previous deaths/vampire killings in the show.

This is a good point. I always wondered something similar about the concept of reincarnation: surely if you behave well and return reincarnated in another life as someone else, then all the benefits accrue to that someone else. Might as well behave like an arse, die at the age of ninety five having enjoyed being selfish...and then somewhere in the universe a worm is born who isn't me because I'm not a worm. That's no kind of punishment at all. No-one's getting punished in that scenario; not the worm, because it probably likes being a worm, and not me because I'm dead. In reality all the reincarnationists have done is point at a worm and convince a bunch of people that it used to be a car thief or something. The death of Marwa in this episode and the death of the 'reincarnated' person are both variants on the problem of identity over time. A creepy idea that got under my skin was when people would ask me time travel questions like 'what if you could go back in time a year, to the self you were then?'...and when I thought it through, and wondered what it would be like to be flashed back in time to a year ago, ie. for all my memories and experiences from the last year to be wiped, and for my mind to be transported to back then, I couldn't help but think that it would be indistinguishable from my own death, the death of who I am now. It feels like murder to erase someone's memories to such an extent, with no possibility of returning them. Sure there's still a person there who looks like me and has most of my experiences; but it's not me. I'm gone. As this series went on I hoped Colin might regain his memories from his previous existence at some point, so in a sense his previous self hadn't actually died. But then if these deaths and rebirths are a cycle he goes through then in previous seasons he'd have had memories from all his lives; and he didn't. So he must die over and over again. No real psychological continuity there for him; just a general Colin-like shape of a person that he grows into each life.

Cheers. I've had similar thoughts about reincarnation, although I'm uncomfortable at the idea of treating others well just for a divine reward anyway. If there turns out to be one it's a cool bonus. That's an interesting thought, I'm not sure whether I'd see that time travel scenario as a death but it would certainly strike me as a sad loss, and Marwa seems to unfortunately lose everything. I have seen an interesting theory that her presence was a sophisticated apparition by the Djinn all along, leaving the actual her preserved elsewhere. Still, this was a dark ending to her storyline that made me feel a bit deflated, so after this episode I did take a moment to remind myself that it's all make-believe, and very silly make-believe at that haha. I actually suspect Colin does remember his past life (or maybe lives), at least by the time he reemerges as his adult self, but that the feed he could enjoy from pretending otherwise - from Laszlo's disappointment at his efforts to care for Colin being apparently forgotten - was just too tempting to pass up on. It would be a pretty callous choice but not out of character. That might not be something the writers have fully made their minds up on though.
