Happy to see you staying true to yourself Leo.. this is an amazing foriegn classic. It can be very hard at times to see past the German/Nazi aspect and to remember the human side of the story, but the story and characters pull you in, in a way that you almost forget.. instead you remember this is about people, and that no matter what side you are on, no one is the true winner.. no one comes out of it unscathed. I remember first seeing this many moons ago in film school, it's good revisiting it 20 some years later.

I actually had a stoned convo about this film with a friend of mine, we where joking about how what if the crew of Das Boot was in charge of the Enterprise. We concluded Star Trek episodes would be a lot shorter and violent. Just a confused German screaming "ALARM" and then 200 explosions on an enemy vessel

I love films like this who show the average German and not the ideological nazi fanatics during wartime, another good film I recommend is the tv film Wheels Of Terror. It's an adaptation of the Sven Hassel novel of the same name but instead of a U-Boat crew it depicts a group of German Penal Soldiers on the Eastern Front fighting the Russian's against their will. One of the actors you would be familiar with Bruce Davison who played Senator Kelly in X-Men plays a German Communist who the Nazis imprisoned and forced to fight on the Eastern Front against the Russians in that film.

Not going to lie, appreciate the drop, But you have way too many shows/movie franchises to be waiting over a day and dropping some shit like this. Especially after dropping the new release schedule that you haven't stuck to. Not even trying to pressure you or be rude in anyway but when people come back after 3 days when you just put out a new schedule and there has been no update to the stuff you been putting out while putting out random niche stuff, doesn't feel good. Lots of German films have sad or tragic endings, especially ones about the war. German society had a lot of feelings of guilt they've had to deal with. Both the director and author also really wanted to avoid the triumphant hero survival story common in Hollywood at the time. They stated many times they didn't want the audience to want to be on a U-boat at the end. Random, but there was a period in the USA where films heavily favored tragic endings too. Post-Vietnam, Watergate, Civil Rights etc. It was pretty much expected for films to have tragic or at least ambiguous endings in the late 60s and early 70s.
