baby it's not the school's system's fault. it's not your mama's fault. it's OUR fault. the more years that pass, it gets easier to forget. it's up to us as a people to keep these stories alive. i'm 45 and i don't know if it's because of my wanting to know, or the things that i saw my mom watching, or reading that made me want to know more that keep all of these horrible and beautiful stories alive for me. my children are mixed race but best believe i have made them aware of everything we have been through as a people. there's a famous quote that says "if we forget history, we're doomed to repeat it." let's keep these stories alive so we don't repeat it. it makes me sad that all of these people are only telling you the next movie to react to. i saw how this movie affected you and i'm glad for that. hopefully you'll be one more person to share our story. much love Leo.

I 100 percent agree with you about the education system.. As an Indigenous Person I know that our history is just that, history.. swept under the rug.. you need to see movies like "Wind River" "Woman Walks Ahead" "Avatar" "The Revenant" "Wind Talkers" "Dances with Wolves" and TV Shows like "Yellowstone" and"1923" to understand just a minor part of our cultural history. but besides my rambling, back to THIS great movie: the shit girl is actually Bryce Dallas Howard (Famous Director Ron Howard's Daughter) and her acting is just top notch! The more you absolutely HATE the villain, you know they did their job. Jessica Chastain is often confused with Bryce but is also a damn good actress in her own right. check out "Molly's Game" "Miss Sloan" and "Woman Walks Ahead"

The show The Watchmen deals with what you're talking about at the end how the schools don't teach us enough about the history of black people in this country. The first episode is the reason so many people including myself learned about the Tulsa City massacre in the 1920s. It's a very very good show and it sort of combines history, and alternate timeline, and superheroes it's only one season and I know you would like it even if you don't react to it you should still check it out.

I learned about Juneteenth not from class, or a teacher, but by looking in the back of the book at the glossary. It happens to be my birthday June 19th so it caught my attention. This was 1997, in Alabama. I couldn't wait to get to that chapter just so I could brag about it being my birthday. When the time came, the teacher just skipped over it as she did certain chapters. I got pissed. I said something to a classmate. One of them is bolder than me and shouted out "Aye, why'd you skip the part about the slaves being freed?" She said, "Well that's just a holiday in Texas. 'This is Alabama'." As a 7th grader that was all I needed to know. She just went on with the next chapter. Never heard about it ever again until mid 2000's because a nearby town in Mississippi has a Festival every year Juneteenth. Now its talked about nationwide but even back then I never missed an opportunity to let ppl know by birthday is an actual Holiday. They ask what I mean, then I get to give them a history lesson and hope they keep and spread the knowledge.

That's the problem...you keep holding on to something that never directly impacted you and so you'll always carry a grievance. You'll always feel hard done by and will always feel that someone owes you something. You're 'American' and you should teach your kids/Grandkids that. This 'victim mindset culture' has to stop.

I'm not trying to hold on to grievances. I'm not black, and I'm not trading in grievances as currency. I'm just saying that when you erase the past, you erase people's accomplishments right along with the bad things. If people were better educated, both white and black, there wouldn't be so many perceived grievances, because most seem to stem from misinformation. My son just graduated high school, and I don't believe he learned anything of value at all in his entire time in school, except maybe how to read.
