the Cohen brothers (directors, also did the big lebowski) called this a “love letter” to the early 20th century music (we now call it Americana, the precursor to country music). (jazz also began in a similar era). 100 years ago, if it helps.

Cely

Kyndu

Well... thanks for the info. I'll stop asking.

PsyMama

Leo, the key to it all is that it is based on the super famous epic mythological Greek poem/story/play "The Odyssey" by Homer. Look that up then the comparison to the plot of Oh Brother, Where Art Thou. It will explain 80% of everything. The other 20% is just the usual weird craziness by the Coen Brothers, which I now realize you haven't caught up on and YOU ARE MISSING OUT - they made some absolutely genius weird brilliant movies like: Blood Simple (1984) Raising Arizona (1987) -HEEEElarious Miller's Crossing (1990) Barton Fink (1991) - dark weird and twisted, their best I think Fargo (1996) - dark weird and twisted, also hilarious, won like a million oscars The Big Lebowski (1998) - I think you did that one? THE DUDE No Country for Old Men (2007) - BRUTAL but brilliant And now I have to recommend kind a crappy movie Angel Heart (1986) directed by Alan Parker - a huge hit in the 1980s which basically ruined Lisa Bonet's wholesome image as Denise on the Cosby Show, some people love it, some people hate it but it's a must watch for you now. Oh and Alan Parker also directed "The Commitments" in the 1990s - YOU HAVE TO DO THAT ONE TOO!

PsyMama

Oh and "Man of Constant Sorrow" is a real folk song, several covers are well known, no it was not Clooney singing :) "The recording used in the film, sung by Dan Tyminski, was featured on the multiple platinum-selling soundtrack which won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards in 2002" from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_of_Constant_Sorrow

Chaos T

Leo, interesting you mention Tommy and Sinners. Both elements within Sinners and Tommy's character draw inspiration from blues legend Robert Johnson who famously sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads. There are some very weird and instances within the Blues/Rock n Roll culture surrounding Robert Johnson and his music. He's considered the first member of the "27 Club". For those who don't know, he and a lot of musicians including Kurt Cobain, Amy Whinehouse, Jimi Hendrix, and Jim Morrison died at age 27. Some who have played Robert Johnson's songs, most notably "Crossroads", have met horrible ends or have had horrific tragedy in their lives. Lynyrd Skynyrd covered the song and later three of the band members were killed in a plane crash. Eric Clapton covered it when he was with Cream and tragically, lost his two-year-old son through falling out of a window. Whether it's true, a good story, a myth, or whatever; it's probably best for artists to stay away from covering his work 😂

Gobe

Same. I suggested it a few times on here but I think because it’s like 30+ years old now less people watch today.

EZ

This movie is a fuckin Trip

Steevn Sonder

Until Nolan drops his, this is my favorite film adaptation of The Odyssey.

Kluneberg

horse is very popular outside the US. japan does sashimi horse and france uses it a lot too. tommy johnson is based on a real musician named robert johnson who allegedly sold his soul to the devil at a crossroad. and no that wasn’t clooney singing. another movie with great music is Cold Mountain (2003) the rock musician jack white did original songs and played a character.

I studied both Homer's seminal works, the Odyssey and the Iliad when I was in University studying literature - ancient Greek stories that are the origins of foundational philosophical stories/morality tales throughout our history and the Iliad and the Odyssey are two of the oldest and most influential in the development of literature/writing of oral histories/stories/folklore. It's fun to track the references, like the Old Man of the Sea (the blind prophet), Cyclops (John Goodman), Sirens (the three singing ladies), a trip to the Underworld (devil) and themes like having a great "odyssey" and dealing with obstacles in an attempt to return home - just numerous references and the Coens' interpretation of them. More Coen Brothers movies! I THINK you did their version of True Grit, but maybe not....But I've never seen Raising Arizona here - that's endlessly quotable. Young-ish Nick Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman. Burn After Reading is a hoot, too. And...please...have you done Fargo? You MUST do Fargo....

~ ChelZee ~

Highlights on: Raising Arizona and Fargo. He's already seen Big Lebowski a few years ago, but it was part of the videos Patreon deleted.

~ ChelZee ~

Yes on Memento. It would break his brain. I don't think Mulholland will go over well here....

PsyMama

TRAGIC! Don't you think he would lose his mind over Barton Fink though?! Crazy ass movie 😮

~ ChelZee ~

Seeing John Goodman reminded me that Leo needs to react to RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES! Also, the fat politician and his son reminded me of Jackie Gleason's Sheriff Justice and his tubby fool of a son in Smokey and the Bandit.

Nizate

Leo, have you seen THE BIG LEBOSKI ??? if not, you must watch it

albete116

selling your soul to the devil is a story about Robert Johnson. wich both o brother where art thou and sinners are based on. and many other storys like it.

~ ChelZee ~

Well, the character Tommy Johnson's storyline was based on the myth of Robert Johnson, but the film, as a whole, is based on the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey by Homer.

Sharpgirl

I got to see George "Baby Face" Nelson's cell on the Alcatraz Prison tour. He was a crazy mofo

albete116

Yes i should be more specific, sorry. U are right, thats what i mentalt but expressed it poorly.

John Juan

Discord mentioned!

J

"Play it Tommy!" really sound like you said "Black Tommy!" and I'm dyin

Trey M

I thought you reacted to home free singing “ man of constant sorrow “ cover song a while back? Btw look up Tommy Johnson in folklore. Like a lot of people in this he’s based on stories from the past. The Oddessy on which this was based on took place in the 7th-8th century BCE
