Hey guys! Just wanted to inform yall that the final Nana reaction video is being edited right now. Hoped to get it done today, but it's been taking longer than expected. Goal is to finish it before Wednesday.

In the meantime, I've been reflecting on why I've historically felt so much less eagerness editing Nana episodes compared to other series/movies (hence why it takes so long to put videos out), and I think I've finally cracked the code. I realize that this story has so much emotional complexity beyond many of the shows I'm used to watching. Characters don't think or act in accordance with typical tropes and oftentimes even contradict themselves or demonstrate their own inability to understand their own emotions. Layer on the cultural specificity of it being set in 90's Japan, and it has even more "context" to consider than usual.

So honestly...I think this show just makes me second guess myself a lot. The confidence around understanding the characters and the world of IWTV, for example, just doesn't exist for me with Nana. And I believe that's been impacting my enjoyment of the editing process for months now. Like...I just never know if I'm saying the right thing, if I should cut out a certain train of thought, or if I'm overthinking it. There's just this subconscious pressure I've been unknowingly holding to "get it right." I have been so grateful to all the commenters on videos to help reorient me on any misunderstandings, but at the same time, they also make me kind of anxious.

Do yall feel like you fully understood the characters on your first watch or am I alone in this?

Anyway, just felt compelled to document this realization. Still powering through editing, but I guess I wanted to provide some context? Idk the point of this post really.

I really understand what you’re trying to say. I honestly don’t think anyone fully understands the characters in nana on a first watch, or even ever. Ai Yazawa herself has said how complex they are, and that’s exactly what makes the story feel so realistic to me. It was only after I finished the manga and started watching analyses and theories that I realized how differently everyone interprets the characters, and I absolutely love that about this series. There isn’t really a single “right” way to understand them. So I don’t think you should feel insecure about sharing your thoughts or theories. That uncertainty and self-questioning is part of what Nana does to people, and it’s also what makes reactions so interesting to watch imo. Seeing different perspectives (even misunderstandings) is part of the fun. Soooo please don’t feel obligated to cut things out or “get it right.” We genuinely enjoy hearing your thought process. And I hope you can still enjoy reading the manga too ☺️

I appreciate the comment, Sara! Clearly I was in my feelings when I wrote this haha. This story presents such realistic and complex characters that it can be a bit intimidating from a reaction standpoint. I have bookmarked a number of videos essays I'm excited to get into! Hoping that will help paint a clearer picture. Also excited to see how they continue to be depicted in the manga!
