Is every episode of Hannibal this gruesome and violent? Is there any levity at all? Or does it get worse? 😭

BTN

I was literally just watching season 1 today and thinking “Idk if Temi will like this” 😭 it gets very gruesome

It stays about the same throughout the series. There a moments of levity, whole seconds & minutes. It’s a descent into the mouth of madness.

Yea it can get quite heavy with the gore. I’m usually quite good at handling that but there has been moments that made my skin crawl. I do think the story itself is worth watching for (especially once you get to season 2) but def known your own limits!

Lol it’s very graphic and gory tbh! I didn’t watch the whole thing myself when I tried picking it up (and I don’t mind the gore personally but I just didn’t get into the show) but yeah that’s pretty much how it is, with many of us here from the iwtv sphere, a lot of us tend to like thought-provoking gothic media which centers around very dark themes so it made sense for ppl to recommend that show thinking you’d like it (since you liked iwtv) so I think for many of us that are coming from that network of interests u may have to emphasize ur boundaries for the type of content you’re able to tolerate, and if the boundaries change depending on whether it’s animated or not etc (since graphic anime exists as well and u cover anime too c: )

I can't tell you because I couldn't get through the first season. It was just too grim.

Yeah, I can sort of see the logical steps from IWTV to Hannibal, but yeah perhaps I might need to be a bit more precise about personal limitations. I guess I never thought about how I react differently to violence vs gore. I watch shows/movies with a significant amount of violence, and it's rarely an issue, but I don't think I've ever seen a show quite like this where the images are more disturbing/grotesque than brutal/bloody, you know?

There are moments of levity but the bit I remember the most is dark humor, like Hannibal joking about what he eats type jokes, and the characters saying wild stuff. While I don't know what your limits are it does remain very gruesome and does so across different directions like unique kills, *mass* murders, and known characters getting victimized. I had a friend yell at me because they got queasy while I described an episode once and they were totally justified to do so. While I like the show I very rarely recommend it and never judge anyone for dropping it. Do what's best for yourself!

Oh man, I’m already a wimp when it comes to gore, so I’m a bit nervous. But it’s encouraging that you believe the story underneath it all is worthwhile.

I'm a huge Hannibal fan, and I can tell you, it gets much, MUCH worse in terms of gore and psychological depth. It's going to be really intense. If you don't want to see that and don't want to delve into that kind of psyche, you should probably skip it. I can also point you to some similarities with IwtV. For me, it's practically a preparatory character study. But I don't think the IwtV series will go that far. It's more related to the later books, which develop a certain dynamic and become extremely brutal. So, why am I such a big fan of Hannibal and what happens in it? I work as a set designer and prop master. For me, it's first-class craftsmanship, a great concept, and superb writing. Although I also struggled with the psychological aspects and their depths, my professional interest allows me to abstract from them.

It’s a piece of art but it’s super dark. The viewer is led along with Will. The gore is a constant aspect and the way they got around NBC censors was to make the blood a darker color. So, if you reach a point where you have to stop, we understand! Hannibal literally is an acquired taste. And I don’t just say it for the pun.

Oh, interesting strategy of making the blood darker. Wild that's all it took to get on NBC. But after just finishing episode 3, I think I'm weirdly getting used to the gore. Not sure that's a good thing 😅
