I haven't finished the episode yet lol but instead of After Dark reactions, i think a reaction to some of Autumn Brown's interviews on youtube would be better! After Dark is cute but the host is a little ..off... like the energy isn't there and the questions aren't too interesting. I think Autumn's videos do a better job at discussing what's going on in the show. Also this article is amazing https://www.tvinsider.com/1275679/the-vampire-lestat-season-3-finale-sam-reid-jacob-anderson-sheila-atim-interview/

i second this! either autumn brown interviews or the ones posted on tv insider with jacob, sam and rolin. sam discussed lestat's relationship with gabriella and incestuous trauma that the show is depicting and how it all ties into lestat's character with so much grace and care (i recommend his interviews to everybody lol) and i hope another one after the season finale drops too. i don't know how interviewers for tv insider work exactly lol they were always different i believe but they all had very good questions not just with jacob, sam and rolin but with the entire cast too.

AH! i don't know if you mind people blabbing in the comments but i loved this episode so much and you made so many nice quips while watching that i wanted to add my take on lol! my take on him constantly repeating the "could be nice, could be, hands touch" is because he finally reached a certain point with louis where things were better between them and they were building towards something so i think he was literally trying to fight or delay death by constantly pressing the snooze button on the alarm because he's like "i can't die now i can't die now things are finally somewhat good between us, i can't leave now". and paul appearing - i think paul wasn't a hallucination but that was actual paul that was supposed to help him cross over to the other side bc remember how paul said god speaks to him through the birds or something? i think paul was there to help him cross over which makes the moment where he says despite louis having a hard time saying i love you to lestat HE DOES LOVE HIM all the sweeter bc its the first time lestat gets a confirmation that louis loves him but also it comes from paul who freaking hated him when he was alive which means paul has nothing to gain from telling this to lestat but he just wants him to know that he's loved by louis. i think it is super important bc we see how everybody around him this season used the love he has for them against him, gabriella told him she loved him to manipulate him into her bed etc so to me lestat perhaps accepting that louis loves him for who he is was a really beautiful moment since he's been seeking that out throughout his existence. also your comment on the witches burning scene...you're one of the rare people that noticed two of the older girls were basically punished for being sexually abused, i think seeing that at such a young age definitely left permanent consequences on lestat and the way he talked about the sexual abuse by gabriella and magnus by dismissing it or making it into something he willingly participated in.

Okieee finished the video and yes Rolin has mentioned that this is really just a part 1 of 2 for Lestat's story - to me if felt a lot like the ending of season 1 where it leaves you with a lot of questions a bit of confusion but some excitement too. Weirdly enough i feel most at peace with the Armand x Lestat x Louis drama but i have a lot of Talamasca / Daniel/ Akasha questions lol. I personally really enjoyed this season even though its pretty different from the book, I was excited to see what new way they would change the story and I can't wait for more!

Jana

I'm too tired to go into anything tonight, but I have to say I loved it. I had the same feeling as you about how it ended on a note of, "I may have failed, but at least I tried, and my life meant something and was worth it.," and finding that pretty apt and satisfying. The only thing I'm bitter about (and I'm really bitter about it) is that we never got to see him perform "Butterscotch Bitch"--the final song. It was one of the original 4 or so released before the season even premiered, and it has remained one of my absolute favorites throughout the entire season. I've been waiting to see it performed every week! And then they tease it in last week's previews for this week, and they tease it in the episode multiple times. And then...nope, gonna end it without showing us the any of the final concert at all. Gah!!

nataly

omg yay i’m so seated for this let me warm up a cup of coffee and i’ll be back :3

nataly

yes! she also meets with the editors and directors aside from the cast so you really get a sense of the team behind the show :3

I think you hit the nail on the head re: Armand! There's definitely an emotional immaturity there (possibly as a response from being so intensely traumatized as a child) despite his actual age. He has, like, scorned teenager vibes. And torturing someone until they apologize to you is a wild, wild choice. (At least Regina will be able to pay for therapy with all the money Louis gave her...?) I really liked that both Lestat and Louis reached similar points of having to acknowledge their failures and decide how to (begin to) move past them. I have some issues with the finale not really feeling like a finale, but I loved the book-ends of Lestat starting the season saying, "Hey, the stuff with the Queen wasn't my fault, really" and ending it by saying, "The fault was mine. All mine." Character growth! (Excited for more Hannibal, btw! May your software not betray you anymore.)

xris037

People are so resistant to the idea that Armand IS REALLY REALLY REALLY pissed off at wasting all that time with Louis AND not having the relationship on his own terms.

xris037

Everyone at the long table is Lestat.

xris037

Yes, Alex knew about Larry's suicide. That's why he was refusing to speak with Lestat.

nataly

lol you trying to make sense of the absolute mindfuck that is armand is killing me 😭 no i don't think this was at ALL proportional to whatever slight he felt from louis but he is deeply unwell and far too powerful for his own good.

xris037

He does do the performance - he says that a few times over the season and in this episode.

nataly

i love hearing your thoughts on the season’s themes as a whole and each character arc! i get what you mean about armand, lol, he’s so fascinating (he’d love to hear that too 😭) and it’s like i don’t agree with how he goes about stuff but i can understand how an extremely troubled ancient vampire might feel this is reasonable lmfao. i do feel so badly for louis bc i obviously hated what armand did to him, in the sense of this level of torture, but also the whole regina thing. like it’s the same kinda for lestat. i’m like a beheading? fine i get it. but releasing a revenge porn video of incest is just so gross! armand exploited both their deepest wounds, but i’m proud that they both managed to get out of it with their lives, some trauma, but also clarity of mind.

nataly

ok sorry to spam lmao but just my final thoughts as i get to the end of the video: i’d described it as “anticlimactic but not in a disappointing way” but i think you hit the nail on the head for me. it was a beautiful conclusion to the arcs we started this season. i think the “anticlimax” was the expectation of the concert and akasha taking place this episode. that’s what i assume a lot of ppl wanted this episode, but it’s not about that yet. clearly lestat is still going to perform, we see the future at the end there so we know the concert still takes place. i’m deeply curious to find out what pushes him to do it even though he’s stood up to gabi. but yeah, this season wasn’t about the concert. that’s what we all want to know, but this season was them grappling with the things that burdened them. they did. now the story can move forward. still… i’m greedy and i need season 4 tomorrow 😭😭😭

lynn

yes, i'd love a reaction to the after dark episodes ♥ they help a lot with context and details

lynn

also he does end up doing the performance. in 3x01 and here in the voiceover he mentions how the concert was what led to disaster. and how he should have quit then and there (in the bus at the end)

Honestly, I’ve been nervous to see how people react to this episode, specifically Armand. I love him, but this episode was really close to making him a mustache twirling cartoon villain. I have some problems with the episode, but I think they saved his characterization at the end. Thank you for always treating all the characters with nuance. Anyway, I think you’re right about Armand’s emotional immaturity. The actor said something about how his behavior is like a teenager. I think he was frozen by the trauma, and then frozen again by vampirism. “A room without walls…and infinite nothing” is both profound and devastating way to feel about yourself. Him calling Daniel a black hole in 2x5 was all projection. And I’m glad they addressed how fucked up Armand and Louis’ dynamic was. The same night Armand shared about being a sex slave Louis decides to start their insane 24/7 bdsm dynamic. Staying with him to punish Lestat and Armand was also messed up. To be clear Armand abused Louis too, but I think everyone recognizes that, but not a lot of people see the way Louis used Armand. Assad’s performance was breathtaking, and if there was any justice he would be getting an Emmy. Daniel - I feel like they didn’t know what to do with him this season. I’m hoping there’s more next season since he’s actually a part of that book. I think I get what they were doing with Lestat’s arc, but the fact that he never apologized for any of the things he did to Claudia and Louis, and just nitpicked on details from the book the whole season, made his emotional journey weaker for me. I am glad he finally stood up to Gabriella. As for watching After Dark: honestly I think only the last one is worth watching. The host kind of sucks and never lets them fully answer her questions, but for the last one they go into a lot about what they were trying to do this season. I do second Autumn Brown’s interviews because they are really in depth and interesting. Yayyy black sails! I do want to warn you that the first season is its weakest, but it’s absolutely worth it.

I think Armand wants Louis to apologize for never really "loving" him, or at least not loving him enough. Armand broke coven rules by choosing not to execute Louis in s2e3. Armand put himself in conflict with the coven he's been devoted to for hundreds because he loved Louis and saw a future with him, but Louis said "no" when asked if they're companions and insisted that he just wants a casual relationship (which is completely understandable. Louis doesn't really "owe" Armand love just because Armand decided to spare him. And Louis was definitely not in the right headspace for a serious relationship at that point in time). Then Armand, convinced that Louis never loved him and didn't care about him, sided with his coven in executing Claudia and Louis. But then at the last minute, Madeleine confirmed that Louis does love Armand. Armand felt like he couldn't back out at this point but Lestat saving Louis changed things. Armand lost the respect of his coven and unfortunately couldn't just forget Louis and move on with his life like he initially planned. So, he let Louis go and allowed him to kill the coven. In Armand's eyes, he basically gave up his whole livelihood for Louis. And then Louis got back with Armand just to spite Lestat. So, Armand feels "used" in that sort of way. Like he was always just a rebound for Louis to get over Lestat (especially since Louis admitted in the interview in s2 that he was thinking about Lestat and hallucinating Lestat while him and Armand were together in Paris).

Janeka Rector

You are brilliant. All the words you struggled with to describe Armand’s character: immature, innocent, etc. this is exactly how Anne describes him in her books. This is a character that is very popular in some corners and one I care very little for in the books. His book is the book in the entire series I cannot read and I’ve been trying for 20? Years. The show managed to capture the heart and spirit of this character but tell his story in a way that’s personally so compelling to me. I’m really impressed by how you found Anne’s work through Rolin’s pen. Armand is an extremist, he’s cunning, and he’s a survivor. I was really affected by your understanding of him. You gave him a lot of grace. I really don’t like him but you’ve kind of made me love him. Thank you.

Thea

All those lovely moments with Louis being woven through what was basically a death montage and especially right before "hitting snooze" which basically means their tenderness and love was what made Lestat cling to life and keep trying to come back... the romance of it all ough. I don't know if Paul was a version of himself like ghost Claudia or if he was another projection of Lestat but I love that moments after Gabriella called it "a fog he mistook for love", Lestat got the confirmation/certainty that the love was genuine and reciprocated. Also I found it intriguing they focused on this Enzo guy so much, the only thing I could think of was that his suit looks a lot like one of the suits Louis wore in Nola? There's definitely some symbolism involved and I hope they talk about it in interviews or maybe it's something that'll be explored the next season. Speaking of, I def agree with you that this season is gonna be mostly liked by people who enjoy character studies and digging deep into dynamics. Full enjoyment depends on expectations and after readjusting mine a little, I was definitely able to appreciate all 7 episodes. Would be fun to see your reactions to anything cast-related, I love their understanding and care for their own characters. Btw just read a Vulture article on episode 7 where Sam and Jacob talk about how romantic this episode is for loustat and aaaah!!

sara

i love your reactions so much, you are so insightful... ty<3

Janeka Rector

I do think it’s great when the cast talks about their work. So the After Dark has really insightful moments from the cast and Rolin. The show is awkward though, the host is not the most compelling or insightful. But the cast is brilliant. Autumn Bottom Browns Encore aftershow episodes with Sam/Jacob, Delainey, and with the director Jane Wu were absolutely brilliant.

gabbyness

Just adding that assad’s interview is really good too

Daniel McGuinness

I genuinely never made the connection between Louis being a pimp and Armand being a victim of sex trafficking and that could be a really interesting conversation between the two of them - but Armand if you don’t get the FUCK out of here I-…. And my initial thought is that Raglan wants the concert to go ahead so that they can wake the Queen and therefore have a shot at killing ALL vampires… but that doesn’t seem to be what happened lol

Sara

Did that Enzo guy look like Arturo (Lestat's driver) to you at all? I've been comparing screenshots but can't quite tell. We saw a very quick mirror flash of Arturo and I feel like all this focus on Enzo must mean something...other than, what I imagine is a showing that Lestat does remember and connect with all his victims, which is such a thing in the books it was a nice nod to see.

Sara

Thank you for the reaction! Insightful and entertaining as always :)

Thea

I didn’t even notice that shot of Arturo lmao gotta go check cause they kept mentioning him and I’ve been curious. But yeah knowing the series we’re in I’m willing to bet there’s gonna be something more to do with Enzo/whatever he represents in the future. It was surprising to hear Lestat spent years(?) in Europe after the trial so maybe we’ll get some flashbacks about that time.

Fiona

I think ep3 and 6 from this season were my favourites, but I thought this was a reasonably solid finale, despite the fact that I don’t think the whole Armand/Louis apology think makes any sense (Armand backdoors his way into Lestat’s band… to force an apology from Louis? He kills Larry… to get an apology from Louis? Ridiculous. In the book, that whole dynamic is Lestat and Armand. Not sure why they changed it the way they did because it doesn’t work as written. Also really not impressed with Armand switching off the livecast of his traumatic backstory when he & Daniel released Lestat’s incestuous sexual abuse tape online. But I loved Lestat taking over the long table and I loved the scene with Paul (whom I saw as a messenger/psychopomp, not part of the crowd of murdered-or-traumatized).

gabbyness

The Autumn brown Hannah moscovitch interview would be good to react to too. She talks about what they were trying to do this season and she’s very insightful.

Jessica

It’s interesting, because I read Lestat’s appointment of Antoinette as transcriptionist for the Long Table as a kind of guilt (?) for having used her as a telepathic switchboard between Louis and Claudia. He didn’t turn her because he loved her. He needed her to voice other people’s thoughts, and it led to her death (and was a waste of the blood). For someone who said in episode 6, “Justice for Antoinette,” he also didn’t care enough to imagine what her actual grievances with him would be.

Rachel Whitehead

Hi, I just want to say thank you so much for sharing these reactions -- your thoughtfulness is always impressive and you make so many connections as you watch, picking up on a lot of subtleties and the way new scenes reflect back and add fresh context to older ones. I appreciate that you are open-minded about all the characters and capable of holding both their good and bad qualities, their lies and half-truths and painful honesties all mixed together like they are in the show. I like that you argue with the narrative when it feels like it needs to be argued with, but are also giving it a good-faith read and letting it call on you for empathy, too. When I watch your reactions, I think: This is exactly the kind of viewer that these creatives wanted to make this show for, and they're lucky it's found you (as are we)!! I was really excited that you mentioned you might go on to do some reactions to The Newsreader later on -- I love that show, and it's such a hugely different performance from Sam Reid (Dale Jennings has totally opposite energy to Lestat, it's a delight to see, and Anna Torv as Helen in that show gives such a powerhouse performance, too!) Also, just a thought, I don't know if you'd have any interest in this, but The Vampire Lestat album has been released now on Spotify and YouTube (and maybe Apple Music, too?) Anyway, it's 23 full songs, professionally recorded, and there's so much that didn't make it on screen or only appeared in fragments on the show that gets more fully explored in the album -- I think it'd be very fun to see your reaction to that music, or if you don't want to listen to the whole thing on camera, maybe just a video with your top ten or something, and taking a look at the lyrics to see how you interpret them? Not trying to make more work for you, I just love getting to share this show on your channel :) One other thing worth mentioning, I think, is that the actors give really thoughtful and in-depth interviews about their characters. I imagine others will recommend some of their favorites for you to check out, but I'll throw a couple in the ring for you. I love this rambling and enthusiastic interview from Sam about this season: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLf-6bc8BSQ And Collider did a really nice group interview with the ensemble here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGl-ym7HbRg And an in-depth personal interview with Jacob after the finale where he talked about both the show and also more about his personal journey as an actor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDGgaVaU_Ig And I also enjoy this succinct summary Sam gives of some of how he sees the Gabriella arc playing out with Lestat: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/AEwJ_l0BCYs

Sadie Daes

Wow, you said so many interesting things when discussing this episode that you made me see it in a new light! I think I didn't really understand this episode before, I like it a lot more now.
