Helen's hair and shoulder pads are wild lol. Honestly though I respect 80s trends for being so extreme! Like even in the mainstream and more conservative professional spaces. I don't think equivalent extremes have existed since.

I was nooot expecting Dale and Helen to move that quickly through the will-they-won't-they stage either!

Honestly, I wish our fashions today could be a bit more out there. The shoulder pads were fierce!

lol one of my favorite things about this show is that it doesn’t do overt exposition, it lets you figure out the characters as you go along. like what’s going on with helen’s mental health? what was that about adam? (if you recall, adam left dale a voicemail in ep 1!) all shall be revealed in due time! also, idk if you picked up on the undercurrent of… expectation that lindsey was giving during that scene in helen’s house. him saying he’s the only one that bats for her, and when she says “i know” he asks “do you?” which to me implies he wants her to *prove it*. that’s why i think helen starts sobbing once he leaves and she’s with dale. i think she was trying to get extra wasted so she could go through with it. i’m already so excited for you to keep going so you can see the journeys they all go on :)

Really enjoying your reactions! I’m now a little ahead in my watch of this show and I’m looking forward to hearing your take on some things. ❤️

I so agree; Lindsey's driven her home in the midst of an obvious breakdown as she's feeling discombobulated and vulnerable, given her drugs, shared booze, and heavily implied that she needs to keep him happy if she wants him to name her as Geoff's replacement with the higher ups & keep her mental health issues quiet. That scene is subtle, but it seemed to be clearly moving towards sexual propositioning (and some of her expressions and reactions suggest that this isn't the first time Lindsey has done this with her). That is what Dale interrupted (though Dale doesn't realize it), and why she's so emotional when she winds up ending the night safe with him instead of getting pressured into something transactional with Lindsey. This show is never cartoonish in its portrayal of '80s culture, but it can be brutally matter of fact: a bad boss could absolutely get away with expecting sexual availability from female subordinates if they wanted to get any 'big breaks' professionally. And of course the shame of that gets placed on the women, not the boss: notice all the little comments this episode about how there's an office gossip mill around Helen; she even says 'are they calling me a slut? They'd say that anyway,' etc. I appreciate the show for portraying an ugly power dynamic without adding lot of commentary on top of it -- that they're showing rather than telling how normalized this kind of thing was.

Gosh, that what I was suspecting but couldn't quite confirm it. But that subtlety is actually reflective of how those situations play out in real life. Never too explicit but the undercurrent definitely present.

nataly

Exactly! Yeah, especially because she was seemingly "going along with it" until someone could save her from the situation. Those are the cases where some would argue she didn't outright say "no" even though the power imbalance is just way off. Painfully realistic.
