Thanks for bringing up biphobia! There's so much bi erasure baked into this and in ppl's reactions to this from what I've seen. I don't actually remember how clear they get on Dale's sexuality but I read him as bi and obviously very closeted. I'm not sure about the creators' intentionality around all that, might try to dig into it.

did you mayhaps have teenage dirtbag stuck in your head when recording this? that's the only noelle i can think of

It’s so strange to me how people view sexuality as all or nothing. I do wonder if the creators view him as bi as well or if we’re intended to see him as a gay man.

I'll be sure to comment if I turn up anything interesting!

And ya I dream of a world everything is understood to be fluid

I also think an extra complication is the time period and place -- like, although bi erasure is still bad now, it was much worse in the '70s and '80s. What kind of queer concepts or queer community has Dale had available to shape his ability to understand himself or envisage different possibilities about where his feelings might fit on a spectrum? In addition to whether the creators view Dale as bi, I think there's also the question of how much Dale himself understands bisexuality as a possible identity -- growing up in this time period in a pretty rural and conservative community in Australia, with strong stigma against both acting on or talking about this kind of thing, he genuinely might have been presented implicitly with a 'well, you're either Normal or you're Gay' attitude all his life and not ever really seen many alternatives to that binary. And clearly a lot of guys around him jump to the assumption that he's gay based on his manner -- or at least that's the impression I get (there was that line in episode 2 where his coworkers at Geoff's party were like 'I thought he was a poof' based purely on vibes, from what I can tell.)

Really appreciate you adding all that! I vibe with Dale's nascent sexuality struggles to some extent having been born in the 80s; I'm much younger than Dale but I didn't have references until the end of the 90s/early 00s. I didn't begin to develop any concept of my queerness until my 20s. Love what Sam Reid had to say there. Love him.

Oh, I'll definitely mark that as a post-S1 read!
