2026-09-29 09:00 Re: Tim's reaction. I agree, from Tim's POV Dale is choosing heterosexuality. But I think he's kind of wrong here, viewing Dale's unique experience as a bisexual (and I'm using this word as an umbrella term here, as it has historically been used). To that end I think the language Tim used during their talk in Dale's flat is pretty telling: "life on the other side of something like this." There is no other side for Dale because of his sexuality. That's what Dale means when he says they're very different people. And that's why the line "I love you just the way you are" (improvized by the amazing Anna Torv by the way!) hits so hard – Helen is saying that she doesn't understand his experience, necessarily, but that that isn't necessary for her to love him as he is. The lyrics of song that plays at the very end also hint at this special connection between them: "You gotta hope that there's someone for you as strange as you are." Helen and Dale are that person for each other despite their vastly different experiences. I also really loved what you said about homosexuality vs same gender attraction because there is a difference but ever the AIDS crisis bi men have become a lot less visible hence why I think a lot of viewer's reaction (including myself, an out and prouf bisexual) was to assume Dale was gay as soon as it was hinted that he experienced same gender attraction. Thank you for this reaction, well worth the wait!!

looooved the reaction and your breakdown of the characters' arks! it was truly a great season of television. i also vaguely remember something about part of the "talk" scene between Helen and Dale at the end of the ep being improvised. anyways, Anna and Sam are terrific in these roles p.s. it's actually Kyiv (kee-yiv), Kiev is the fuckass russian transliteration p.p.s. that one-second-frame of your hannibal tab has excited me probably too much

I love the Succession reference! I can totally see Geoff as a character in that show and him going toe to toe with Logan. Their pathetic asses do have a lot in common lmao.

Anna Torv improvized only the "I love you just the way you are" line. But man, what a line.

truly a masterful season! and i'm shocked that any part of that scene was improv. it just felt so perfect. and okay, i thought so! was nervous i was pronouncing it wrong this whole time. and hehe it's coming soon!

everytime i see an old man past his prime clinging desperately to power, i think of Succession lol. so pathetic, the lot of them!

Yeah, it's a subtle binary thinking that straight and gay people often unintentionally project onto bisexuals. That scene with Tim/Dale really shows the spectrum of same-sex attraction. Attraction to men doesn't negate attraction to women, but people really struggle with that. But I love how much Helen accepts Dale because I do think it'll help him fully accept himself. Can't believe that line was improvised because it was something that Dale REALLY needed to hear in that moment. Anna just knew 🥹

I've loved your reactions to the season and I'm so glad you chose this show to watch! As you say, not many reactions are available out there, so it's very special to have thoughtful and enthusiastic commentary to enjoy. I love Helen and Dale and their relationship, and perhaps my favorite thing about them is the way they accept and respect each other so generously and try to work through their problems like adults -- in the world of television romances, that's a rare and beautiful thing! (I wonder if one reason not many YouTubers engage with this show might be that the final season isn't widely available outside Australia, so there could be an assumption that most people just won't be able to follow it through to the end? The show was a huge hit in Australia, though: at their equivalent of the Emmys, it won best drama every single season it aired, and Anna Torv won best actress every time, too.) Also, forgive the tangent, but if you're looking for a short, incredibly high-quality show to tackle between seasons, I actually would highly recommend the HBO Chernobyl series. It's only 5 episodes total, so a good quick project to get through, and it has stellar performances and sharp writing depicting the utterly harrowing true story (and for the most part it's quite historically accurate, apart from a little bit of embellishment of the final courtroom drama). I think it's another fantastic piece of television, and it illuminates one of the single most important catastrophes in all of human history that is not remembered in popular consciousness nearly as much as it should be.

And Dale's reaction in that moment -- sobbing because he was so overwhelmed, then reaching out and holding her in amazement and gratitude -- really makes me think that he'd never experienced that kind of acceptance and love for his whole self from anyone else in his life before. Dale already loved Helen before this moment, but I feel like this conversation had his love for her ascending to a new level before our eyes <3 And it's so meaningful to me that when Dale told her about feelings he was ashamed of and how he often felt so torn, she responded by sharing something she was ashamed of (her history of being put in a mental asylum) to show him she intimately understood what it felt like to be torn by ineradicable emotions, and how she had also learned to be afraid of how people close to you might react. Responding to someone else's vulnerability and shame by sharing your own takes courage, and Helen has courage in spades.

That’s something that I will always love. Watching a TV couple address their conflicts with maturity. No contrived conflict that could easily be resolved with communication. Just makes the romance feel so much more grounded and real. And yes, it’s been on my list, but this episode makes me want to watch it sooner!
