The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Initiations. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week Robert Beltran joins them in the recap and discussion!

Initiations:

I really enjoyed this episode of the Podcast. Robert Beltran is hilarious. Chakotay is my favorite character on Voyager. I thought he was very loyal and dignified in the role of a first officer. Much love to the Delta Flyers for this episode!

Dee McGee

What a sweet tribute to Aron. 🙏

Amit J

RIP, Aron. I learned so much about him from this convo and I was very happy to see Robert back again.

Blue Berries

Very late to this, but there is an internal schematic of Voyager that shows the whole layout deck by deck, and according to that there was approximately 15-18 shuttles in two different sizes.

Chris Flores

I love this FRIGGEN podcast. Thanks for the pin, I love it!

Jennifer Gorrie

Yay! Robert ❤ you guys are the best, Thank you so much, love the podcasts 😊

Borgscan

I've been looking forward to this episode featuring in the podcast. It's a special episode because of Aron's appearance. I agree with Garrett's opinion about the Kazon appearing too primative to have advanced technology like warp drive, but I will point out that later in the series it is revealed that the Kazon took everything from the Trabe. The Trabe kept the Kazon servile and weak until the Kazon revolted.

Rich Gross

As much as I don’t really enjoy the Chakotay Native American-related scenes, I like this episode. It’s a great little two-character play with a great message, without it being too cheesy. Garrett - It’s very interesting to me that you picked that line of yours about no response on several frequencies as your “do-over”. I actually “bumped” a little on that one when I watched it and I was wondering if I was being too picky, but to me that line just didn’t match with the tone of the scene the way it was delivered. But really, in such a minor way. This was a great podcast episode. I was hoping you’d have Beltran join you for this one. One thing I was very happy to see is your addition of the question to Robbie about directing style. I was thinking just last week that I would love to hear his input from that point of view.

Stephanie Baker

I really enjoyed Robert Beltran’s commentary. RIP Aron Eisenberg. His character Kar would’ve been a nice addition to Voyager, if he chose to stay with them.

AJ Provance

I feel like I've been hypnotized to do something, but I just don't know what it is!

Charles Petrosky

Oh man, what was that song I wonder? I can't think of anything in 1995 that resembled The Doobie Brothers tune: https://youtu.be/9W0-XpVK0GE Just based on the year though I'm thinking TLC's "Waterfalls" or Seal's "Kiss from a Rose" 🤣 But man, looking at the Billboard list 1995 was a great year in music!

X904810

It sounds like Beltran's new short film series would find a good home on Quibi

Borgscan

That's those pesky subliminal blinking messages from the Borg again.

Matt

Yes! So awesome to see Chakotay joining the podcast this week! Thank you!

Matt

Is anyone else now searching for that song that Chakotay mentioned about Aaron singing while on set? LOL

Matt

I gained such an appreciation of Aaron when I saw him in Voyager, but even more so throughout DS9. He always seemed like such a cool, down to earth guy, who genuinely enjoyed what he was doing.

Matt

This episode was one of the best so far, maybe THE best!

Matt

Interesting that Chakotay would have rather changed the line about "being a gentle man from a gentle people", I agree with Robbie, I think Robert pulled it off perfectly. I never gave it a second thought as anything other than genuine.

Matt

I always thought the Kazon were not the best bad guy alien race in Trek as well. I really would have liked to see the Vidiians explored much more than they were.

Sony

When I saw this episode, I associated the Kazon with the Taliban/Al Qaeda and their use of boy soldiers. I wouldn’t be surprised if a second meaning to this episode (besides Chakotay’s portrayal of positive masculinity) is to shed light on the real-world situation of children being torn from their families to fight and die in wars. A very sad reality. Robert Beltran and Aron Eisenberg were brilliant in this.

Ambiguous Asian

Great episode❣Aron is epic, always ready to see more of Robert B

Sony

Another great podcast, thanks for bringing Robert Beltran on. By the time the Delta Flyers upload their final podcast all of us will have an advanced degree in Star Trek: Voyager studies.

Matt

I always enjoyed the Chakotay episodes, I found myself enjoying the spiritual aspect that he would bring, and showing respect to native american culture.

Sony

Razik with the "Kazon delicacies" was a laugh. Harry Kim's impressions are always on point. His joke at 57:20 kills it. “Because for some reason that escapes me at the moment, I keep hearing you sing that song. Now if you want to hate me for that fine, but I’d really appreciate it if you kept it to yourself” 🤣

Sony

Sony

Nice. I remember an episode where Seven mentioned that the Borg left the Kazon alone because they were "unworthy of assimilation". Damn, that was cold!

Moonglade

Yay! I love seeing The Commander on these. I especially enjoy the obvious camaraderie between you all after all these years. "Initiations" has always been one of my fav Chakotay episodes, along with "Nemesis", "Timeless", "Tattoo" and "The Fight". Robert and Aron were really great in this episode and played off each other so beautifully. God bless, Aron xx Oh, and I bought "Butterflies" on Amazon Prime and I've watched some of it - got as far as the bit about the character's wife (no spoilers), but I'm waiting for a kid free zone to watch the rest, LOL! xx Hell to the YES! on a Captain Proton mini series. I'd love it :) LOL! At Garrett's Kazon reproductive organs location observation :D

N+D

Another good discussion, but this late night Sunday release schedule is going to be the death of me. (My fault, I know)

Patrick Carlin

I was able to meet Aron at a convention here in Minnesota 4 years ago, I was getting some lunch and I happened to hear him a few tables over talking with some people, after they were done I went up to him and we talked for a few minutes. Super nice & down to earth guy!

Sebastian Kajan

Thank you guys for this great podcast. I really enjoyed having Robert Beltran on the show, too and the chemistry between you three... Wow, I‘ve watched Voyager that often I feel this strong kind of familiarity just hearing your voices again.

Christopher Collins

The best part was winners and Looser’s with (Spoilers) the answer the medicine pouch and Shuttle as the looser.

Christopher Collins

Shattered was a Great episode and great episode for Seska.

Brandon Yahn

I'm going to say, I have to be honest and say I LOVE Robert Beltran. Love his acting, love his role, love the way he brought his character to life. If you guys could, please - Tell him it's his character, and his acting in this role, that helped me enjoy Voyager the most. Along with Tom Paris and Harry Kim honestly. You three made the series what it was, all 7 years.

Stephanie G Williams

I loooooooved this sooooo much! It was so fun to hear about all the behind the scenes shenanigans. And of course, it was a lovely tribute to Aron. Thanks also for bringing back Robert Beltran. 😍 Y'all are always like family when you get together. It's sweet. 😊

Stephanie G Williams

It's truly brilliant. I've watched Butterflies sooo many times, and always I notice a subtle nuance that I've missed before. Robert is incredible in it. And Palmer Jones does a great job, too. I highly recommend it.

Luz R

This podcast was so enjoyable! Love Robert Beltran, it was so nice seeing him.

Jennifer7895

Bonus Tier: Captain Proton!! By far the most fun and creative of all the Holodeck programs dreamed up throughout Star Trek!! I really hope you guy's develop some shorts for it!!

Marc Loeser

Please make the Captain Proton project happen, crowd source it if you have to, you have so many fans that would love to see it happen!

Sony

For a Captain Proton episode, it would be freakin' epic if you hosted as Captain Proton and Buster Kincaid in black and white. 🚀

Sandie Yeomans

I am so glad you are going to count shuttles lost! I've watched through several times and I laugh every time a shuttle is left behind or lost somewhere but I have never counted. Please do that!

Amanda Fraser

Someone may have already answered this, but to answer Garrett's question yes Voyager is the first ship to land. There is an interview with Gene Roddenberry about why he beams people up and down is because he could not figure out a way to land the ship.

Krystian Aparta

Robert Beltran had very cool energy. Great episode!

Elizabeth Manning

Finally got around to watching this. Such a wonderful podcast. Love the energy you three bring to it when you’re together. Thanks for doing this, and especially for having Robert join you.

Daniel

The bathroom "Yes Ma'am" made my day. Thanks guys!

ST Fan CB

We find out later that the Kazon have technology because they took from the Trabe who had enslaved them when they rebelled. This still does not explain the lack of ability to make water. Patrick Kilpatrick was also in an episode of DS9 called "The Siege of AR-558" which was a big Aron Eisenberg episode where his character of Nog loses his leg in the combat action. So they were both in 2 episodes of Star Trek together.
