I'm with you Robbie. I totally forgot about B'elanna's hallucination with Chakotay and was really uncomfortable as well. I kept on saying aloud "Ewww no no no no!".

T

re The Captain's holonovel - I hear what you say about expecting her to be doing something a bit more 'impressive', but i think making all her hobbies 'challenging' would make her more 2d instead of less. I don't see why Janeway needs to be alpha all the time - to me it feels totally appropriate that someone in her role would want to do something a bit vanilla to switch off and embrace her femininity from time to time. When else does she just get to be a woman? It would be doing her a disservice to totally gloss over that aspect of her. I know you guys don't rate the holonovel but as a straight up blend of gothic books Jane Eyre and Turn of the Screw with a cameo of Mrs Danvers from Rebecca (same author as Hitchcock's 'The Birds') I think it shows us that while Janeway has a girly side she's definitely not pink and fluffy, and has some darkness in her. Tbh I think there was potential for a really creepy sinister ghost story episode if the writers had chosen to just commit to the gothic theme instead of just hinting at it.

SnazzyO

…and the insane wife is on the 4th floor. It is straight out of Jane Eyre.

RemiTheNerd

"Chakotay was because... tattoo" floored me lmao! just laughed so hard haha

Adele Lara

Speaking of eating while acting, I loved the way actor Jensen Ackles would dig into a hamburger as Dean Winchester on Supernatural. The opposite was the cast on The Big Bang Theory. They just toyed with their food.

Dee McGee

Robbie: "BTW, why didn't they have an episode where they used dogs..." JohnathanFrakes: "Working with kids, animals, or water adds hours to your day."

Borgscan

Garrett: "Girl you did not just pick up that sandwich and put it back down with the rest the sandwiches!" We always say that too. It's so gross!

Rich Gross

Great episode of the podcast! My favorite has to be Robbie talking about Vulcan being a bad neighborhood!

Mike Fillmon

If I’m not mistaken, the Hair Department was nominated for an Emmy for this episode!

Stephanie Baker

I agree that the Belanna -Chakotay fantasy sequence is weird. In my head canon, the alien didnt get the details right. Belanna was wishing for intimacy with someone/anyone and Chakotay was her friend. and the alien put those together.

Matt

Robbie was pole dancing on a boat in the Caribbean? Never would have guessed that the sports fan, director, and motorcycle rider was also a pole dancer! LOL

Matt

Since this was in season 2, I wasn't completely shocked to see Belanna and Chakotay get together..but since having seen the series many times all the way through, and reading the Voyager books...yeah I just can't see it now.

Matt

Thank you guys always, for a great way to start the week as I sit and work, looking forward to watching and listening to each episode.

“Someone walking over your grave” is a very English thing. I’d say I hear it (in a normal year where I’m not locked in my house all the time..) a dozen times a year?

Luz R

I could not stop laughing!! Robbie you were HILARIOUS! I have also heard the saying about someone walking over your grave; my mom and grandma would say it alot. I have to find out if it is also a Latin thing to say as well...

Luz R

Also I am not sure what my opinion is on repressed thoughts... clearly it's our minds way of protecting us by keeping those memories hidden but eventually I do think the repressed thoughts can creep into our consciousness and affect how we live our daily lives. But then again I think why bother with trying to "figure" things out... it's a complicated issue. What I do believe is that therapy is essential to working through this thoughts/fantasies .

Craig Duncanson

As Daniel mentions, the expression 'walking over your grave' is actually quite common here in the UK.

Craig Duncanson

Oh, I always wanted more of Janeways holonovel. I wanted it taken to its fruition. It was intriguing. I could be wrong, but isn't this the last we see of it?

Stephanie Baker

Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, the Gothic book from the 1800s, used to be my favorite book (Its still up there, but I updated my list when I got older). The holonovel has many similarities. I know whats on the 4th floor in Jane Eyre. When I first saw this holonovel as a young adult, I thought it was super cool because Jane Eyre was a strong female character who was a survivor. There are many more literary options now, but Jane Eyre was groundbreaking. I dont like the holonovel now, but again, I think it was a strong female ideal at the time (1990s).

Stephanie Baker

Thank you Robbie, Garrett and team for an excellent show.

Amber

Robbie......we are also jealous on behalf of you.

Bree Boehlke

Loved hearing your thoughts on this episode. This is an episode of Voyager I don’t rewatch too often and I had a blast watching it. Loved Robbie’s reaction to the bedroom scene with Chakotay and B’Elanna! Too funny.

Jamason Isenburg

Another great podcast!!! I must say bringing up the B'Elanna/Chakotay scenes were hilarious. Poor Robbie. Sorry man its really funny you take it to heart but I totally can understand. Garrett, I loved the humor of bringing it up from time to time! Again thank you both and all involved in making this happen. It truly brightens every week. :)

Erin Coplan

When is that captain proton shirt hitting the store, that’s the real question.😂

Laura

I initially saw this show when it first aired and I was very young, but for some reason the whole B'Elanna/Chakotay thing was not a surprise to me. I had picked up on her interest in him from previous episodes, like her confiding in him, or holding his hand in Twisted. Now if only I sense that kind of stuff in real life lol

Moonglade

Re: Chakotay and Torres smackdown and how Torres felt about it, this is the dialogue from her end scene with Janeway. TORRES: I'm surprised to see you here, Captain. Isn't this the day that you're usually in the holodeck with your novel? JANEWAY: I thought, after our recent experience, that I'd take a break from fantasy for a while. TORRES: I don't blame you. I think it had quite an impact on all of us. Do you think it's true? That the alien was reading our minds, creating images from our own experiences? JANEWAY: It seemed that way. He had uncanny ability to bring buried thoughts out into the open. Why? TORRES: Oh, it's just, I experienced something I'd rather not admit. JANEWAY: I know. Me too. But, in a way, maybe he did us all a favour. Maybe it's better to look those feelings in the eye than to keep them locked up inside. TORRES: I guess. I'll have to think about that. I have an early watch tomorrow, so I'd better turn in. Good night, Captain. JANEWAY: Good night, B'Elanna. Sweet dreams. TORRES: Thanks. You too. ------------ Gotta let it go, Tom - B'Elanna has :D Personally I think Jeri Taylor was on a mission to share the Chakotay-love amongst the ladies! :D

Mike Gu

🙇‍♂️ [Spoilers]. It’s Mr. Rochester’s first wife! What a book/story. Love Jane Eyre.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Great recap... On a side note, Do not know if this was intentional or coincidence but this episode originally aired Oct 30, 1995. Just in time for Halloween.

Stephanie G Williams

This is tooooo funny! Sorry, but I have to laugh at how offended Robbie is by B'Elanna's Chakotay fantasy. Who wants to bet he called Beltran and ribbed him about it?? 😋🤣😁

Jim Guckin

This has to be one of my favorite episodes of the delta flyers, only because Robbie's feigned anger over B'Elanna and Chakotay and Garrett just kept mentioning it. There were quite a few times where I needed to stop the playback to try and control the laughing. Good show guys!

Jen Wallen

Robbie's reaction was HILARIOUS over the B'elanna and Chakotay scene. Also I totally get stressed Janeway at the start. That is a mood for me at the moment lol

Megan Hurwitt

This was a great episode. I kept wishing it was longer as I was watching it and watching the count down to the end of it.

Allison McGraw

My favorite rewatch so far, especially the reaction over B’Elanna and Chakotay.

Craig Drebit

Oh I thought she said: Look those feelings in the the THEN keep them locked up inside. I was like, WTH kind of message is that???? :D

Andrea Mahoney Ross

I had always thought that when the alien first encountered Voyager that they were testing to see how to interact with the new brains and Kathryn was who they were messing with first. Once they had a better idea of how to manipulate their kids they went after everyone. I was right there groaning “Nooooo!” With the B’Elanna and Chakotay delusion. Though it’s also likely that the aliens just found a close association to Chakotay in B’Elanna’s mind and decided that must mean love/lust and that why she was so conflicted in the end. Wondering why that’s where it went and trying to decide if it actually came from deep in her mind or was only put there by the alien. Sometimes our brains suddenly take us weird places for no reason.

Emily Hansen

Robbie is so jealous about B'Elanna! That's hilarious. Go Bulldogs!

Laura Johnson

Prepping for Virtual Parent-Teacher conferences has me behind.....finally got to watch this episode and it was fantastic. I love your comments about the music when Janeway encounters the creepy girl in the corridor. It reminds me of a music class in college where we watched portions of movies without and then with the music and how different the viewings were. As far as the holo-novel goes....has anyone ever asked Kate whether she had any say in it or if she knows why they went that direction? I know she has mentioned somewhere that she had something to do with the introduction of the DaVinci holodeck character.

Krystian Aparta

Just FYI, English does have consonant clusters, just not ones that are as robust as those in Russian. For example, when you add the plural "s" to anything that ends in a consonant, that's a consonant cluster. For the one in "kto," English even has very similar consonant combinations to that one, e.g. in "liked."

Bethany Avery

I love how in previous podcasts Robbie talks about how kissing is just part of the job- no jealousy! But then in this one he is losing his mind- “Mr Paris that misogyny you don’t like of early seasons is showing!”

Bethany Avery

Garrett- you now have your answer to why it was Tom and B’Elanna instead of Harry and B’Elanna: your glances were just never in sync. Timing was all wrong!

Mathew Sands

One of my favorite episodes of DF---Robbie had me rollin' with his "jealousy" hahaha. I hope Roxanne gets a chance to watch this, lol.

Miki Tracey

I have to disagree with you guys on why they focused on Janeway's love-life in this series... I think they used it as an homage to TOS. There are four places in TOS where Kirk mentions that the captain cannot fraternize. The one that really bugged me was early in the first year when he whines "They gave me a beautiful yeoman". Of course, i only got it because i watched TOS right before Voyager re-watch.

jpness

Probably a coochie moya XD

Cass

The B'Elanna/Chakotay scene always felt wrong to me. It gave me the willies back when it aired, even when Tom/B'Elanna only had Faces and a few shared quips (and eye contact, Harry!). I loved your reactions to that here, haha. I wonder if the writers chose this scene for the alien projection just in order to cover more characters. I mean, I always felt B'Elanna looked up to and admired Chakotay, but other than the hand hold in Twisted I don't recall any hint at this type of desire elsewhere in the series toward him. Edit: Well, apparently Paris disagrees, lol. I forgot about most of the scenes B'Elanna and Chakotay shared that get brought up in the following episodes.

Mario censullo

Speaking of aliens that might be like octopus or dogs I thought Talaxians were a feline race? Am I wrong?

Megan Moore

This has to be one of my favorite so far. Robbie’s jealousy is so cute. :) Also I must say I always liked Janeway’s holonovel. I was a young girl when it aired and it looked like so much fun. It looked like something I could see myself wanting to participate in. I will say I was disappointed we never learn what’s on the 4th floor.

Christina

I loved Robbie’s reaction to B’Ellana and Chakotay. That was funny! Great episode guys, both Voyager and podcast.

Rachelle H

Dude when it comes to the south we (or most of us) gave that virus to the Lord. The Lord and Razorbacks is what we are about in AR. Lol. The Holo Novel is from Jane Eyre

Denise Gilbertson

I thought the Janeway's choice of story was appropriate - she likes period & classical novels - so no issue for me!

Lisa Gunn

I loved this episode especially for Kes and we are seeing her abilities strengthen and being more involved as a character.
