Garrett I had a similar issue with not waking up to my alarms! I was suffering from depression and was a fulltime nurse, fulltime mom (with infant twins!) and was just absolutely exhausted! I had to change my alarms to something completely jarring because the normal ringtones would incorporate into my dreams as beeping hospital monitors and machines 🤣

Lee Stroud

My respect goes to Garrett for his courage when discussing that difficult time in his life and how he grew as a person. As a physician, I have had the honor of helping souls in similar situations. His openness is going to help others. Thank you, Garrett.

Dee McGee

I've always known what an amazing human being Garrett is. Met him at his table in Vegas last year. Thousands of fans and he gives them all his complete and undivided attention.

Mark Scheuern

I wonder if it was someone's regular job to clean the exhaust manifolds? If so, that would be a pretty disappointing Starfleet assignment.

Vicky Thompson

I’m really late on this but a big THANK YOU to Garrett for sharing such a personal and vulnerable story. A lot of us have experienced big wake up calls like this, that were transformative to our lives. You really touched me.

Jeremy Taylor

Garrett, thank you for what you did in this podcast episode. Depression is not an easy thing to talk about, and I have a lot of respect for your willingness to open up about what was going on in your life while working on Voyager. Much love, brother.

Alishams Hassam

Definitely, thanks for setting the record straight. People sensationalized this way more than it needed to be. Like on top of what to already had to deal with, you also had to read about the BS in tabloids.

Alishams Hassam

Was there going to be a link to the Tom Paris song?

Craig Drebit

Thank you very much for sharing. I'm glad that nowadays it's a little more acceptable to talk about depression and issues of mental wellness.

Stephanie Baker

Love the Disney/Musical connection. That Beauty and the Beast TV show was on in the late 80's with Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton.

Stephanie Baker

I also struggled with waking up in my teens and early 20's. I would place the phone far away and schedule wake up calls with family members, i would request my roommate to drop ice on my face, i had multiple alarm clocks with the Snooze setting turned on. I would turn them off and go right back to sleep and my dream. If I had to be at the hospital at 4am, I would set up multiple backups, starting with my watch. it was dreadful and stressful.

Andrew Murray

Vorek - smarter than the average Vulcan - except when proposing a "pon-farr" solution to Torres!

Andrew Murray

Torek? Sounds like a mix of Torres and Vorek! (something like "Tuvix").

Andrew Murray

Yeah - Nic Locarno and Tom Paris should either have been twins, or Nic Locarno carry-through as the Tom Paris character.

Andrew Murray

I remember this - Neelix needs the map because he knows nothing about the space, beyond the Necrid Expanse, and feels he's going to be useless the "Hitch-hikers Guide to the Delta Quadrant" so to speak. So that's why he wants to get his finger in the Security pie.

Andrew Murray

ironically the whole scenario is what Neelix, if he wanted to be a security officer, should have been fully aware of: the dodgy deal his "friend" had set up.

Andrew Murray

I still see an obvious connection between Nic Locarno (with the Nova Squadron incident in TNG "First Duty") and Tom Paris. It is a pity they (writers/producers of Voyager for whatever reason couldn't use the character name in Voyager (for some copyright reason when Paramount/CBS OWNS the franchise (???), as that would make much more sense in terms of the casting choice of Robbie for both Nic and Tom. They could well have taken another page out of the TNG book and make Tom a transporter duplicate of Nic....

Andrew Murray

That story of the haunted buiding brings back memories of Neelix's recalling "the haunting of deck 12" to the Borg children.....

Christopher Collins

I think this episode kind of reminds me of the Mandalorian where they have to trade on a deal that the main character does not want to do but eventually has to give in and go against his morals to go in and deal in something dangerous like drugs or weapons or something like that. Then the hero finds a way of trading but finds a way so no one gets what they want. I think this story would have done better by a different kind of character than Neelix because this was not what Neelix was known for based upon his morals. I like this episode in that we learn a different side to Neelix.

Christopher Collins

I also agree with Robbie that this was not a consistent episode and I think it is because the set up of Neelix and his back story of what he used to do before his home world was hit by a weapon very well. Had that been established more then it would have been better episode to incorporate more details established in previous episodes.

Christopher Collins

I think this episode was an important episode for Neelix as well as next one later on titled Rise because they set up Neelix for bigger roles on the ship such as diplomacy and working in security when needed.

Matt

Ok, I vote for a new "vocal lesson" or "vocal section" of the podcast! Well done Robbie!

Karen

I don't think that they were mixing Locarno and Paris here. Yes, the reason that Tom was in jail was because he was a Maquis. But why was he a Maquis? He joined (as Chakotay said) because he was a mercenary, looking for anyone who could help him "pay his bar bills." But the whole reason why he was in that position was because he had been forced to resign from Starfleet.... because there had been an accident and he had *lied* about it. It was the inciting event. Without the lie, Paris wouldn't have ended up in jail or on Voyager.

Matt

Such a wonderful episode, hearing from Ethan. I always love when you guys talk with Neelix. In addition, thank you for sharing Garrett! You sharing those struggles resonates with me and I'm sure so many who have struggled with depression, not being able to get up, and dealing with untrue and damaging rumors.

sab ewell

Harry having a break in the Holodeck actually works in canon because next week he is always in the Holodeck with his crush lol. So maybe that's when he met her.

Joseph Zodda

Fun episode. I always enjoyed the episodes where Neelix is more than just comic relief. The fact that this place was at the end of his knowledge always inspired my imagination. What is in this huge expanse past the station? I had never heard of Garretts hiatus for a few weeks due to being late. Its TERRIBLE that they would accuse you of being on drugs and force you to get help when it wasn't needed. I mean they wouldn't even let you get a word in? Geez!!! Berman could be such a cold individual at times.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Dear Garrett; thank you for your honesty on your dealing with depression. I had the same bout in my 20's. between college and working. It was a struggle. It's too bad the powers to be would not listen to your explanation and just dismiss you like that.

bakura

Wow, I heard the claim that Garrett only stayed because of being voted sexiest man on the trek culture youtube channel. thanks for clearing up the truth.

Taisho Rose

The moment you realize this is Voyager's Say No to Drugs Afterschool Special.

G. B.

I liked this episode, I actually rewatched it twice this past week. I thought the story was tight. As the seasons passed, I grew to like Neelix more and more. I think Neelix was a much stronger character without being coupled to Kes. By the end, he was one of my favorite characters. Insecurities are a damaging thing. Most of us have them to some degree. Embrace who you are! Garrett, I can’t help but see the similarity between your story and the difficulties you experienced based on your perception of your place in the show, and that of Neelix’s story in this episode. You both went down dark roads based on your perceptions of your situation at the time, while those around you saw nothing of your troubles. You went through turbulence on your way to finding some peace later on. “Let the truth set you free.”

Ramon Medina

Great ep as always, guys. I especially loved Ethan dropping in for the ep but was equally sad to hear Garrett had such a rough go of it during this time. Been there as well, Garrett, so I'm glad you got through that in your own unique way.

Hannah Swartzel-Rausch

Garrett thank you for telling us the truth about what happened, I'm sorry you weren't listened to when you should have been. About Vorik, I think his upcoming episode Blood Fever was directed by Andy Robinson, who I would love to see as a guest on the podcast!

James

I love how Robbie says 'buddy'

Angela

I didn't see Tom's explanation to Neelix that he lied as a conflating of Tom with Nick, because what set off Tom's downward spiral was his lying about the accident at Caldik Prime and being drummed out of Starfleet after finally telling the truth about what happened. Also, it was the FOURTH time Tom got arrested and thown in prison: when he was a Maqui, Ex Post Facto, The Chute, and now in Fair Trade.

Mike Gu

The mind does not arise from the brain. Johnny is absolutely right. Also suggest a book by NDE expert Bruce Bryson - After.

John Skinner

I always thought that by finding the box Tom was looking for, nelix (not realizing at that time) he can be helpful in other ways.

Karen Chuplis

One of my favorite podcasts yet. I agree with Johnny Rise is really good and I’m looking forward to your reactions. It’s quite different. Garrett I wonder if nowadays your difficulties would have been approached much differently. Has the industry changed enough with the times they’d recognize them. In many or most companies I think people are now much more likely to address it from “why are you having trouble” as opposed to just a dressing down and punishment without discussion. In the 90s not so much. I’d hope it has evolved because people are so much more aware now but one never knows. In some ways the entertainment industry is sometimes mired in the past.

Lisa Minnesma

Thank you for having Ethan Philips on as a guest! It’s always a treat to have fellow cast members on and seeing everyone bond and reconnect again! It definitely feels like a family! .... see what I did there 😉

Lisa Minnesma

Thanks Garrett for sharing your experience on depression and mental health! It’s sooo important! I’ve had it too and it’s no joke and can be very serious. It’s sad to hear that Rick Berman was not able to listen and understand. That’s rude of him. I had a boss like that too. She actually even triggered my anxiety. Thanks again for sharing and being vulnerable!

Lisa Minnesma

Also.... near the end of this video, speaking of Blood Fever that’s coming up and guest stars! Could you guys ask Roxann if she’s interested and available to join for the episode? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤞🏼 Thanks!

Jenny

This was nearly a decade before YouTube existed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (Excuse me while I feel very old.) He WAS named as one of People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People (1997; YouTube launched in 2005). The rumor/speculation over who was let go to fund the new cast member in season four tied into whether or not that publicity factored in, though it became obvious in subsequent years (well after the show) that there were likely factors in addition to the creative/who the writers were having a hard time working into stories that contributed to the ultimate decision, which would have had nothing to do with any other cast member’s situation. (For lack of better phrasing.) And of course, Harry was in pretty bad shape in the season three finale, in a way that can set up a death in the next episode, so given there *was* a cast change at the same time, that would have factored into speculation as well. (Janeway wasn’t near death until the season premier, so *not* over the hiatus, but no one would have speculated about the lead being in play for an ensemble casting change anyway.) That fans were so upset by the casting change, and the blatant sexualization of Seven’s costume/the show and how much the writers completely focused on her (beyond the normal requirements to introduce and loop a new cast member in) to the expense of other actors and their characters (for awhile, Seven made Janeway look like an idiot, as I recall feeling at the time) just amplified the speculation and rumors over how the cast change went down. Because while she ended up being a fantastic character and actress, and was totally faultless in the situation, it was a huge tone shift (in sexing it up for ratings and in plot and character focus), and really controversial among existing fans.

Cody Caudill

It would be so awesome if they could, but it sounds like Roxanne Dawson is incredibly busy these days. But even just a 10 minute appearance would be great since we've heard from just about everybody else at some point so far.

J

Do studios account for LA traffic or weather delays in call times for crew and cast?

Sony

Thanks for having Ethan Johnny Phillips on. He's a funny, cool guy. That Haunted Hart building looks like a job for the remaining Ghostbusters (RIP Harold Ramis).

Sony

When they showed those blue Reludian crystals to Tom and Chakotay I was expecting Jesse Pinkman to come out and say “It may be blue, but it’s 99.1% pure!"

Sony

“..And the truth will set you free.” ~ Garrett "Tell that to Julian Assange." ~ SNL Debbie Downer *trombone notes play*

Sony

I wrote a comment thanking Garrett for telling his story but think I accidentally deleted it while removing the one about "Tom Paris lying about a pilot error that ended his Starfleet career" which was already addressed in the comment section. Anyway, thanks for telling your story and sorry you went through that. Not sure if I deleted it or it was removed because I said something wrong so I won't re-write it. Peace.

Sony

Indeed. Also, Tom Paris: superior pilot vision - except when it comes to finding boxes with serial numbers.

Andrew Murray

What's the ep where Tom's thrown in the Brigg for 30 days (or goes and/or joins the Talaxians and makes it like he's leaving Voyager for good....and demoted to Ensign? Of course that is a ruse to flush out a Kazon collaborator among Voyager crew.

Chris Flores

Never knew any of that about Garrett but who cares, Garrett's been nicer to me than any celebrity ever. Nothing could tarnish my opinion of this outstanding actor. I'm really enjoying reliving these episodes with you guys, definitely beats watching it for the 139th time.

Chris Flores

I thought the finding the box scene was smart. It made me think Voyager was saving replicator energy by reusing boxes instead of replicating then recycling. Something the crew wouldn't be used to... er go Tom's lost in a sea of boxes lol.

Justin Rhoads

I enjoyed the story too but I wouldn’t put Rick Berman down. Most bosses in that position have a right to be upset. And the first conversation with them is usually about being quiet and listening. Usually you get opportunities later to talk more less formally. Just not when you’re getting a dressing down for something they rightfully have to be mad about. I am curious how they’re relationship went onward after but I imagine it was okay considering 4 more years went by.

Sony

No, because they can use the transporter. ✨

Andrew Bailey

Just wanted to add my voice to the messages of thanks to Garrett for the openness. Such a valuable thing in reducing the stigma around mental health issues.

Eric Bennett

I am glad that Ethan mentioned that he really liked "Rise". Really good episode.

Eric Bennett

Plenty of times in my life I have been looking for something that was practically right in front of me and I could not see it. I think that happens to all of us at one time or another. I don't see that being different in the future.

Eric Bennett

The $5 per month that I pay to get the longer episode (and the video version as I much prefer the video of them) is money well spent. I've been thinking of kicking it up a tier I enjoy this show that much. Every fan of who contributed to the Voyager documentary should be listening to our watching this podcast. Garrett and Robbie are great!! A big thank you to Megan, Rebecca, and Jessey too!

Christopher Collins

I like the endings now without the photos in front of the face. That was getting cheesy with the photos in front of the face.

Christopher Collins

I had no idea that Garrett had this problem where he was missing for a few episodes.

Christopher Collins

I was Wonder where Kes was in this episode for a heavy Neelix episode. I was wondering that more than Where was Harry.

Christopher Collins

I agree. Rise is better than Fair Trade but both this episode Fair Trade and Rise are great Character development episodes for Neelix and there are not many character development episodes for Neelix after season 3. They give him more responsibilities and show his family more but not much what he did before the Voyager encounter. There is more character development for Neelix in season 1 and three than any of the other seasons.

Ericka Birkenstein

It must feel so good to have a platform to clear up rumors that have haunted you all this time.

Jason Wang

I wish I had watched this last week. What Garrett went through at the time I am experiencing now. I was dealing with my depression by overeating and unsurprisingly I gained an unhealthy amount of weight. It was to the point that it actually hurt to walk with shin splints flaring up even though I wasn't traveling far. I was also messing up on the job which may finally lead to an actual reprimand. I've been taking steps to save my health and lose weight and be more attentive at work and I hope I make it through.

Taisho Rose

About Chakotay possibly replacing Harry in this ep: So I think that if Harry was pallin' around with Tom and they both got arrested YET AGAIN it would've been too repetitive. Janeway and Chakotay would've had second thoughts about ever sending them down to a planet together ever again. Maybe it's better that it was Chakotay. He doesn't exactly have a clean record either, being Maqui and all. And since Tom was former Maqui, it makes sense that they'd both have more of the street smarts to scout for parts in this kind of situation. I'm sorry you went through such a difficult time, Garrett and thank you for sharing and bringing awareness that this kind of mental turned physical fatigue is more common than people realize and it can happen to anyone. You resolved to put in the work to change habits and get out of your funk, so good for you. I am so glad you were not booted off Voyager because the most epic Harry Kim episode is yet to come!

LeeAnne Forsythe

I wanted to say thank you Garrett for talking about that difficult time in his life and shedding some light on that awful rumor. I’m disappointed that you were mistaken for having a party/drug problem and you weren’t given the help that you probably needed but you pulled yourself through it and improved yourself. Cheers.🖖

Sarah Packard

Thank you for sharing, Garrett. The online rumors definitely had it wrong. I went through a period of depression like that when I was living abroad. I’m sorry you got mistaken for having a drug problem and with no way to speak up about the truth then. Thank you for bringing awareness to something that is still highly stigmatized.

Paul Johnston

Speaking of Neelix and Kes- their post 'breakup' is never really dealt with surely? Kes broke up with Neelix while under the Warlords mindset. So when that resolved, you'd have thought that as it wasn't really Kes doing this she'd ultimately still want to be with Neelix? Neelix was certainly hurt and confused she did this without knowing at the time she'd been taken over, so you would think that he'd want her back too. Just all seemed unresolved or the viewers are lead to believe 'well they broke up on screen' but she wasn't her at the time

Jacob Gordon

I appreciate Garrett's courage and honesty in sharing his experience. From my perspective, the studio treated you unfairly -- depression is a serious illness, and anyone dealing with it deserves support and understanding in the workplace. (If someone's boss berated them for having a bad kidney, no one would think this was reasonable.)

Mario censullo

I’m sorry Robbie gonna have to call you out on this. Nick offerman was in parks and rec not the office.

Riley

Bit late to this but lying and covering up is also explicitly part of Paris' backstory as referenced in Caretaker. There's a story in the scene where Paris and Kim first become friends (the Tomato Soup scene) about Paris causing some accident on some colony - where the original ships doctor had also been stationed - and that he initially covered it up, but later came out and admitted it. In the pilot, Paris says that his big mistake was telling the truth instead of keeping quiet and getting away with it, so this really marks a big shift in Paris' perspective and character growth.

ST Fan CB

I am late as well, but I agree with Riley. I see how there can be confusion about why he went to prison but I think it all boils down to the first domino that fell that led to him being in prison. He made a mistake, lied about it, then got kicked out of Starfleet. That led to him joining the Maquis, getting captured and being sent to prison. The lie started it all. OH MY GOD!!!! Garrett left us totally hanging with the security guard story! I know want to know the rest...what happened after she saw you in there? Berman sounds like a class-A butthole

Rach V

Major love to Garrett. Depression alone is horrific but to then be accused of that stuff and have no voice to defend yourself is awful. I feel so sad for you and send you a huge hug.

Carrie Schwent

I'm so sorry you had to go through all that, it can be frustrating when you're not allowed to defend yourself. When I see you on the next cruise expect an extra large hug from me!
