The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Fair Trade. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week Ethan Phillips joins them for a short interview about the episode.

Fair Trade:
Neelix meets up with Wixiban, who cons Neelix into using Federation shuttlecraft to traffic in narcotics.

You guys forgot to count his time in the Chute; so he’s been arrested 4 times.

Yay so glad you had Ethan Phillips on the show. I always felt that Neelix was underrated as a character. Whenever there was interpersonal conflict, he would kindly approach the person affirmatively and in a supportive fashion. He’s kind, giving, hard working and pulled himself up by his own boot straps. Ethan gave this character life!

For that matter in many ways most of the charters are under appreciated. The writers didn’t give them a chance to shine. Chakotay was interesting as a leader because he lead people to make the right decisions without ordering them to. But we really never got to appreciate this cause they always blasted flute music over his dialogue and gave him akoocheemoya

I always liked B'Elanna, she grew as a person and it was interesting how her past family life affected her views of herself. In someways she was the most developed as a character, but again we saw so little of her

And also Kes! So glad that Robbie and Garrett give her a shout out from time to time.

Thank you Garret for talking about mental health. I know how it is living with chronic depression and anxiety and being all alone. And thank you to both you and Robbie for this podcast. It has been a bright spot for me in the last year, and I know for many other fans. Star Trek was something I always shared with my parents. And with a slight blush I had crushes on both of you and looked up to Roxanne for being such a strong intelligent engineer for this future engineer.

Eve England

It was quite upsetting to hear about your experiences, Garret. I’m so sorry to hear that you struggled in this way with little or no support around you. Thank you for being so honest about this - it can be incredibly helpful for people who might be experiencing similar issues to know that it is OK to talk about it and to get help. A really good show, and I echo what Amanda said about this podcast being such a highlight this past year for many of us. Thank you all!

Jennie Marie

Thank you, Garrett. Sharing your story helps to erode the stigma associated with mental health issues. I can certainly relate to your struggles with sleep and depression. What a great episode of the pod! Garrett shares, Robbie sings, Ethan Phillips visits. Fantastic!

Haha I can so relate with Garrett, haha, " they keep buzzing and beeping and it would be this cocophony of sounds" Ethan Phillips is so cool, Peace Out! 😎

TheDeltaFlyers

You are quite welcome:) Happy to hear that The Delta Flyers has been a bright spot for you. Thank you for posting. The important question for you is: who did you have more of a crush on? Harry or Tom? ~~Garrett

TheDeltaFlyers

Thanks Eve for empathizing with my hardships during the filming of this stretch of episodes. Glad that you are part of this podcast journey. ~~Garrett

TheDeltaFlyers

Thanks for posting Jennie. It really was an extra special episode with all the elements involved:) ~~Garrett

Thank you Garrett for sharing your story. I hadn't heard the rumour about you having a drug problem or that the powers that be believed them but had heard that exact rumour about it being either you or Jennifer Lien. I know exactly how much depression can affect sleep patterns and it's still a work in progress. Much appreciation Garrett!

Elisabeth Westner

Finally catching up on Delta Flyers. Just want to echo everyone else's thank yous to Garrett for sharing your story. Must have been tough to share now and even tougher when you were going through it. Fwiw, I've heard some stories about Rick Berman being...not very...understanding, I guess? Makes me sad that he wasn't very nice to you nor to one of my fave TNG actors as well. Jedi hugs to you, Garrett.

Elisabeth Westner

Yup. Poor Tom, always getting caught for doing things he didn't actually do. Now I'm wracking my brain to try to remember if he gets arrested in any future episodes too....

Marian Bieniek

Thank you for sharing, Garrett. Depression has affected me and people I love, so I understand. Your bravery is appreciated.❤

The TNG episode Lower Decks was the inspiration for the tv show.

Horatio Moradi

Pretty sure Nick Offerman was on Parks and Rec, not The Office. Though I don't watch either of those shows, I get the impression they're quite similar.

(this is me binge-catching-up a year later) Garrett's story really hit home. After I graduated I made a (poor) decision to work full-time, lose weight (very seriously, 70#) and earn my graduate degree all at the same time. I also lived alone. I was late several times due to staying up late to finish HW or workout. My boss really tried to step up for me - but inevitably I overslept one too-many times and he couldn't keep protecting me from HR. UGH, it hurt so much when my super-nice boss told me "This [time being late] was ... egregious." (I was 45 minutes late). And I was let go on the spot. Same as Garrett, this was a learning experience for me. I am NOT late anymore, ever. It was a really odd experience because I was reading the book "Iaccoca" about Lee Iaccoca at the same time this all happened. Even a president can get fired. Also this makes me think of the episode in season 5, The Disease (which has not been reviewed yet at this time....). Janeway's super hard on Kim for making a mistake and they ask the question - If it has been someone else (like Paris) would she have been as hard in him? I wonder if it had been another actor, if they would have reacted the same way.
