I think we can all relate to Angel and how we've been personally touched by this podcast. The kind words Robbie and Garrett said about Jennifer Lien were equally touching.

Mark Scheuern

As I write this in March 2025, we sadly don't seem to be making any progress towards harmony, cohesion, and greatness.

Ellie S

That opening message! It was so vulnerably written. Sometimes it's the smaller things that comfort people when they're in need of *something* just to keep them pushing. It's become a habit just listening to it every week, I can only imagine what it'd have felt for that person.

Chris Knapp

I would like to send thoughts and prayers to Angel. I hope that you make a complete recovery. Your letter touched my heart. Thank you for your courage.🖖🏻

Christopher Collins

I like the introduction of Seven of Nine in this episode. She was a strong start to a introduction to a character.

Christopher Collins

That letter was incredible. I have never heard of hospital Covid stories like this before. This is scary to know hospitals could be like that.

Christopher Collins

I never realized that Kim coming back to the bridge was a ADR Audio scene. I never caught that before.

Christopher Collins

I never really realized how long 7 of 9’s ocular implant was until it was mentioned by Garrett. I wonder if the Ocular implant length changes when she is in the Borg gear in future episodes like Living Witness, Survival Instincts and Shattered.

Christopher Collins

Thanks Garrett for sharing that opening letter and just how significant and life changing Covid has been to our World. This gives a new perspective on the seriousness of the Covid situation.

Christopher Collins

I never noticed how the Borg custom looked and how it made 7’s butt look. It was like what, what do yo mean? Now I have to look at it. I don’t recall how much time spent on 7of9’s butt in this episode. I was 7 years old when I first saw this and have seen this episode many times before but that particular aspect of the full Borg Costume I never noticed.

Katie Puterbaugh

This podcast is definitely one of the highlights of my week. I'm a night owl, so I always stay up to listen/ watch right as it comes out at midnight on the Eastern time. Keep up the great work guys!

James Morrow

Another great episode of the podcast. I really appreciate the time Garrett and Rob took to discuss how Jennifer’s imminent departure affected not only her but also others. It warmed my heart to learn that Kate took her aside to talk to her. I hope that Jennifer can find the help and peace she needs. On a different note, I’ve always found a parallel between this episode and the start of the series. There was a great amount of attention from inside Paramount as well as from the press about this change in the direction of the show aka the ‘sexy borg’ thing. I *believe* the reason given was low ratings. Also, in both episodes you had the introduction of a strong female character who served as a leader. Finally, I did like the J/C exchanges in this two-parter. I can understand how each of them truly cares about the other on a deep emotional level. Sometimes you express that caring and respect by being confrontational and honest.

Andrew Murray

Just for fun (don't know if I hit the mark on the poetry or not....) Haiku: Janeway versus Borg Resistance is not futile 8472 is headache for Borg (not sure I got the 'rules' right here; is "8472" treated as "one" or "four" syllables...?) Limerick (not exactly Scorpion-themed): There once was a Captain named Janeway Who told her crew 'we'll get home some day' She went back in time to correct the timeline and Voyager was home in a day .😁 (sort of references Endgame and Caretaker, not "Scorpion" kind of but not really).

Andrew Murray

Does netflix run Scorpion I and II as one feature-length episode? (even though a season finale and season opener)?

Andrew Murray

We are the Borg. Seven has a one-track mind

Andrew Murray

I like Jennifer/Kes's hairstyle in this rather than the short style.

Andrew Murray

Seven shoving Paris out of the way is kind of akin to the "shut up Wesley" moment(s) (?) on TNG.

Craig Main

Dark Frontier is the only 2-parter (apart from Caretaker and Endgame) that runs feature length on Netflix)

Craig Main

I tear up every time I watch the Janeway/Kes ready room scene in ‘The Gift’

Andrew Murray

It would have been interesting if the tables were turned, and Voyager allied with 8472 instead. I mean, maybe there could have been some sort of 'trust' between them. Eventually they reached a truce (when they discovered that earth simulation which was the training round for 8472 to invade earth 'under cover' as humans much like the Founders infiltrated Star fleet in DS9.

Moving to hear Angél’s letter— what an experience to go through, and what a gift the podcast has been. I know recovery from COVID can be slow. Sending him my warmest thoughts for steady recovery, and all the healing time necessary. 💜 to all of us dealing with grief, illness, and trauma from ~ all of this stuff ~ right now.

Beautiful letter from Angel. Best wishes to him and all those affected by Covid-19. I didn't know that panic attacks were so dangerous and could even cause death. I was shocked. My grandmother also took off her mask in the hospital as soon as she could, but she was almost 99 years old and could not fight the doctors, although she had a strong personality. The virus had a hard time taking her away, she had character until the end. I was happy to hear that Jennifer was able to count on the love of her colleagues during the last days of her filming, I wish her the best. I hope you can all get together someday and enjoy that moment very much.

The only problem I have with sevens introduction are the pronouns. The borg mostly say "we" as there are no individuals in the borg but seven keeps changing her pronouns from "i" to "we". In her introduction she says "I am 7 of 9, tursheari adjunct of unimatrix 01, but you may call me 7 of 9", even though I know it would have been more of a mouthful and wouldn't have sounded as good I still think it would have made more sense to say "this units designation is 7 of 9 tursheari adjunct of unimatrix 01, but you may refer to this unit as 7 of 9". That said loved the shot where she circles janeway and tuvok kind of reminds me of the direction Ray Park got when he played darts maul in star wars when he moved back and forth watching qui-gon and Ray Park was told to walk like a tiger stalking it's prey.

bakura

As for Jennifer lien I don't know if you'll see her again, I saw an ad for the destination star trek convention here in the UK and to celebrate the anniversary of voyager they do appear to have the whole cast there except jennifer, so if she can't make it to that I don't know what, and she's been through a lot being arrested several times for indecent exposure (many charges later dropped) then being court ordered for mental health treatment (this is just what I've read from Wikipedia I have no idea of the full story).

Stephanie

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I never liked the Borg as an enemy. They have the collective knowledge of every species they have assimilated, they should be unbeatable. End of story.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

After you telling how Kate said she would have hard time coming back after being told of being let go. I had to think about that for awhile and she is absolutely right. As a retired accountant it would be akin to me being let go on Dec 28th but asked to come back for a few days in January to close out the year and balance the books. I would tell them you know what for.... Kudos to Jennifer Lien for taking the high road. I would not have given them that loyalty.

Janet Potts

Regarding the phaser that Tom had on the bridge, it would make sense that all bridge crew were issued phasers in preparation for their partnership with the Borg. Janeway and Chakotay both know that the Borg can't be trusted. You'd want to be prepared in case they did what 7of9 does, try to take over the ship.

Bonnie Chiaccio

An insight that was so emotional and I really appreciate that person seeing how deeply this show can help people heal.

Heather Irwin

Thank you so much for sharing that email. Hope you are recovering well, Angel!

Christinaof9

Listening to the letter and this episode/season makes me emotional when I think of how much this show has meant to me since I was 13 years old. The 7 of 9 story arc helped me through a lot of issues coming to terms with my own humanity. This is a truly great episode...the next one is my favorite all time episode ever!

Karen

I can't remember the episode, but I swear that the bridge crew has a hand phaser tucked away at each of their stations. I seem to recall, Chakotay reaching behind his console once for one. Which to me makes sense. If the bridge is invaded, you're not going to want to run to a weapons locker before your defend your command center. Having said that, I agree that if the Borg are involved, having all crew members carry a weapon would be a prudent order.

Jennifer Z

I think I have an answer to that admiral question “why didn’t Paris go sit in the captain’s chair when he was given command of the bridge?”: That’s just Tom’s style. He likes to sit at his post when not actively doing command things. He did the same thing in the episode “Initiations.” He was sitting at the helm until a hail came through, and only then did he walk up and stand in the center of the bridge.

Taisho Rose

This was such an epic season opener and I honestly see it as a three-parter along with with The Gift. Events of this episode immediately flow into next week's episode which does not often happen on Voyager. I feel so sad over the circumstances of Jennifer Lien's departure. Just when her character was starting to get really interesting, too. It's funny, I remember at the time this aired I was worried they were going to kill off Janeway because she was seriously injured for most of the episode, and instead, they replaced Kes. I wanted to point out that while Jeri may have been sweating in her Borg outfit (which was probably molded out of non-breathable rubber), at that point First Contact (which had come out the previous year) had changed the chalky TNG era Borg makeup to a more clammy, zombified look. I distinctly remember this because I always collected articles about makeup and special effects. The new Borg makeup was all mottled and veiny and had a wet sheen to it. I don't know if it was accomplished with a layer of vegetable oil, but maybe. Lol. Anyways, you can even see this in pics of the Borg queen played by Alice Krige. So I think the moist look was intentional, because it's meant to be unsettling and gross. I mean, she's a Borg drone, not a supermodel. I think. ;) Harry's little honk slayed me at the end! You guys are too funny.

Roy Spaan

the concept worked very well in TNG. They were bad-ass in their relentlessness and mysteriously unknown. In Voyager they became Janeway's whipping boy. Defeating them left and right, and knowing so many of their details and weaknesses, they were almost a laughing stock. And that's even without considering they WERE supposed to basically be the pinnacle of a species. Quickly adapting to ANY weapons or tactics. I didn't hate them, but they lost their staying power from being overused and defeated (rather than escaped from)

Sonia Singh

There once was a Captain of Voyager, Who said, “I know I annoyed ya, But Chakotay you see, If not but for me, The Borg would have surely destroyed ya.”

bakura

I hope you guys are subscribed to paramount plus because it's just been announced that star trek voyager is leaving netflix.

Frankenstein was the doctor's name not the monster's. The monster had no name.

Kassandra

Thank you so much for sharing the message at the beginning of this episode. I think, there are a lot of people who can relate to that. I watched VOY as a kid and since then Star Trek was always something, which gave me comfort and helped me through hard times. I started to (re)watch TNG, VOY and TOS during the pandamic to deal with these silly and hard times. So thank you again, Garrett and Robbie for being part of Star Trek and doing this great podcast. Stay Safe, guys!

Moonglade

Angel's letter was so moving and definitely speaks for many of us I'm sure on how these podcasts and Voyager helped to get us through - if not covid symptoms, then lockdown fever. I live alone and you guys, the cast and Voyager (and in my case, the J/C fan community's creativity) certainly saved my sanity when I had no face to face contact with my family and friends. I hope you're well recovered now, Angel. ❤ I loved both the Scorpion episodes and thought everyone in the cast was tour de force especially Kate and Robert B in their scenes. It was great to see Maquis Chakotay come out to play and decisively follow through on his threat to space the Borg and in his decisions overall. I was not happy (understatement) to have my fav cast ensemble messed with and so I deeply disliked the Seven character for several seasons, my dislike only intensified by the constant 7 of 9 episodes and the way the character was infallible. It took away the drama for me - the anticipation of my crew facing danger on their journey and seeing how they worked together to survive. It seemed there was nothing 7 of 9 and her magical nanoprobes couldn't fix - even death. The character and Jeri Ryan won me over eventually, but I still feel introducing such an infallible character took more away from Voyager's drama than it added.

Jason Wang

I would've thought the easiest answer for Tom staying at the helm is because he's still the best pilot on the ship and when you're among the Borg and Species 8472, you don't want to hand it off to a less experience helmsman.

Olivia Vazansky

When I watched the arguing between Janeway and Chakotay as an adult now, I think she overreats. I know that everybody is vulnerable, but for me that too less to end up the whole relationship. I agree with Robbie that it was the way for the writers to say that it is now over, but I think its rather unusual for Janeway to stop a relationship after one disagreement. I am sorry to say but I think its not fair for Chakotay. I leaves a bad taste. And I think its not the Star Trek way as I feel it, to end up such a deep relationship after one disagreement. - But thats rather typical for Voyager, it was never mentioned /showed how Kes and Neelix ended up. It didnt make sense either. Thats the only thing I dont like about Voyager, that are these unpredictable plot changes.

Samantha

I always thought Chakotay got off easy. He knew what she wanted, knew even as she was going under that he was probably going to do the opposite. He thought he would have more time to sort things out and practice a speech in the mirror before she woke up. I don't know if it's technically insubordination since he was acting Captain at the time, but it would still feel like betrayal.

ST Fan CB

Garrett is back on the left and RDM on the right again! The Force is back in balance. Sorry to mix ST and SW together. Kes is obviously on the bridge because she had been in metal contact with 8472 before and she could provide the Captain information as the battle progressed. Much like why Troi is on the bridge most of the time. Seven VERY CLEARLY does not hip check the Starfleet crewman out of the way but pushes her with her arm. Seven DOES do a hip thrust in the same direction but does not make contact. It IS a very gratuitous shot of Seven's backside however. There was also a gratuitous butt shot of Kes earlier in the episode that was not mentioned at all.

Megan Moore

I think it wouldn’t have made sense for seven to be one of the drones already near janeway. Seven is clearly important to be picked to speak for the borg so she wouldn’t be doing grunt work as they say.
