The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Demon. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Demon:
Voyager lands on a demon planet, with an environment toxic to human life, in an attempt to collect from its deuterium lode.

Robbie: "WHAT?! I don't remember any of this!" Buddy, that's not news hahahahahaha

SnazzyO

Robbie - Although Chakotay is supposed to be a good oilot, the shuttle craft are afraid of him. And his landing was HARD. There was no need to fix systems when Tom landed the ship. Conversely, just like flying an airplane, taking off is 100 times easier than landing. So Janeway able to lift the ship is feasible - although she was burning out ship systems in her attempt. In short, Tom’s job is safe. The Demon planet people: Well… it looked pretty desolate. So sad enough. Harry,Harry,Harry…. A long pole with a sample container would have been a better idea than scooping up a cup of goo. Loved B’Elana’s fuss but neither Chakotay or Janeway would have let someone stop them. OTOH, B’Elana is no fool - ‘Take 7’ was a good idea.

MG

For a guy that always talks about characters needing more development, Garrett doesn't seem to want the Doc to have any!

Dee McGee

I love Robbie's answer "truth serum" to the question what would your "special power" be.

Samantha

I like the planet and the scifi concept here. I would mention that holograms can be programmed with a personality and the doctor's is much like his creator's.

Andrew Murray

Starfleet academy Science 101 "Don't touch what you don't know!"

Andrew Murray

At least Robbie wasn't hanging around on wires or on a gimbal or whatever like "Day of Honor"

Andrew Murray

Voyager has moved on from TNG's use of Printer's ink ("Skin of Evil".....Riker was literally covered in the stuff).

Andrew Murray

So "Demon" is basically the T-1000's home planet.....the difference is the subject is not terminated....sort of...before being duplicated.

Andrew Murray

We already know the Doc can't be duplicated - when his matrix was destabilizing, Harry and Torres tried to create a new EMH, loaded the medical database into its memory and it (yes, "it", not "he") started reciting it literally, word for word.

James Morrow

If Garrett’s superpower is to help win money for people who play games of chance, those of us who live in the Las Vegas Valley are going to have to keep a VERY close eye on him ;-).

Sarah Kridenoff

I love how much enjoyment you guys got out of the word "sawn," but it is a word. I build furniture for a living, and we use quarter sawn lumber. It refers to the particular way the log was cut up. : )

Dez

OH MAN, Garret totally foreshadowed something upcoming!!

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

Oh my god, they gave you girdles?! LMAO. Wow. That is so wrong honestly. I am sorry that happened to you guys!

sab ewell

My husband keeps a dad joke folder on his phone 🤣 here's a dad joke, why couldn't the chili pepper do archery? He didn't habanero.

Heather Kim

Grammar geek here: Tuvok: "Ensigns Kim" - Correct! Robbie: "Had sawed" - wah wahhh. You were right the first time. "Had sawn" - Correct! (Sawn is indeed a word when used with has or had.)

Sarah Allen

I heard it as "Durex" and that... err... means something in the UK lol

Kris Hansen

Reporter here, and the proper phrase for clarify would have Tuvok say "One of the Ensigns Kim." Good catch, Garrett!

Jason

Guys, sickbay has two doors that lead to the corridor. Chakotay came in through the door in the biomedical lab section of Sickbay. Makes sense.

Heather Kim

Also... Why didn't Neelix just sleep in his own ship, since we can presume it has its own power source and it still exists in a shuttle bay somewhere?

DebbieD

According to Memory Alpha, the Talaxian writer was "Jirex".

Bronwen Duffield

I also remember robberies with swan-off shot guns were in the news a lot in the 90s (or at least they seem to be from my memory).

Irene Artho

I agree with Garrett that the upcoming episode which picks up on the Demon Planet episode (called Oblivion) is the saddest ending ever! And the doctor actually can be silver-blood duplicated as well as we'll find out in Oblivion. I'm similar to Robert McNeil, I don't do jokes either. I'm good with puns, but in the moment or as reactions, but not when put on the spot!

Libby Taylor

Any other Red Dwarf fans think of the following quote when they were talking about changing the bulbs on set for different ship alerts? Rimmer: Step up to Red Alert! Kryten: Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb. Rimmer: There's always some excuse, isn't there?!

Luise

The nineties, golden age of "heroin chic". Body positivity was not big in those days...

Luise

I once told my Dad a bunch of Dad jokes and he found them so funny he immediately called a friend just to tell them on ... I am proud to this day.

Eric Leitman

This was Roxanne’s first episode back from being on maternity leave.

William McEvoy

Proper grammar! It's like 'courts martial' or 'attorneys general.'

Brian Gluck

Robbie! DS9 is some of the best tv ever made.. you gotta get on that.

Tara

Did I miss the "rating" on this episode? I was pretty curious what numbers they would give this one...

Eric Bennett

Not sure why it is surprising to Robby that both Captain Janeway and Cmdr. Chakotay can both pilot the ship. You take many roles on your way up the ranks. Janeway made it clear in previous episodes that she was a pretty good pilot herself. Chakotay was piloting his own ship in Caretaker and was in Starfleet before.

Sadie tuescher

I love how every episode starts with a little wardrobe discussion :)

At 8:34 during the corridor walk with Paris and Kim, Paris says "no one likes to see Tuvok put down a peg more than me". The correct colloquialism is: Taken down a peg not put down a peg. As others have stated, there are two entrances to Sick Bay. Chakotay just came in the other one. See this link for a diagram of sickbay. https://www.universostartrek.com/Star_Trek_Starships_Interiors_Schematics.htm An annoying aspect of the story is that it was never explained is how Tom and Harry survived on a Demon planet for several hours without any oxygen despite "the backup systems taking over". The computer stated that they were out of oxygen period. No backup system can cover for hours of no oxygen. From the Oxford Dictionary: The past participle “sawn” is mostly archaic except in British English. “Sawed-off” is the overwhelming favorite in American English, “sawn-off” the overwhelming favorite in British English.
