The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Nothing Human. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Nothing Human:
The Doctor, at a loss on how to treat Lt. Torres, consults the holographic re-creation of a Cardassian war criminal; Torres learns the identity of this exobiology specialist, and refuses treatment, causing The Doctor to experience a moral quandary.

Congratulations, Robbie and family! I tried to suggest my name based what I had named my two of grandparents, but my first grandson called me Mema (hubby Pa). Didn’t like it until I saw how much Shelton in the Big Bang Theory loved his Mema. So happy for your family! She’s a very fortunate little girl.

Katie Puterbaugh

Congrats on becoming a grandfather Robbie! My nephews call my dad Bop Bop lol

Peggy

Boppie?

Don Eitner

I don't quite get why "finger acting" is so discouraged, because people actually do it. For most of my adult life I have worked on the telephone, and even though my clients cannot see me, I find that I gesture quite a bit as I'm describing to them the actions I need them to take. Or maybe I'm just weird.

Tashicat

I never knew that about Directors not being allowed to do 2 eps in a row

Don Eitner

Was it not allowed, or was it merely impractical as the director would need to be in pre-production planning meetings and laying out shots while the previous episode was still being filmed?

DogBlud

YEEES, have end of life discussions w/ close friends and family, be as current on their wishes as possible, be as morbid and granular as you want, bc in the end if the doctor's looking at YOU asking YOU what your loved ones' wishes are, you don't wanna be standing there like 'crap I didn't think about this specific scenario.'

Andrew Murray

Why does the doctor show a "slide show" of images when it was a holo-imager camera, wouldn't he be able to present them on the holodeck like a full 3-D simulation - even if 'still photo' but still 3-D where the viewers are immersed in the setting of each "photograph" _ I mean, the images he's showing are basically photographs a normal SLR camera would take.

Christopher Collins

On my Mom’s side of the family I called my Grandparents Mama & Papa.

Carole Patterson

Papa was what I called both my Grandpas 😊

Christopher Collins

I have never watched this episode all the way through. Once we see Torres get the giant bug on her I stopped the episode both when it aired and on DVD. I don’t enjoy bugs, or doctor surgery episodes.

Nancy Lapierre

When my first child was born my parents were in their 40s, we are french. He became pappy, mom was mammie and her sister was tatttie.

Karen

My grandfathers on my side of the family go by Pap Pap.

Nancy Lapierre

The kayzons didn't develop technology, they stole it

James Morrow

I love the grandpa talk!! I agree that names can be regional like Garrett said. To me, my Mom’s parents in Nashville were MaMa and PaPa; my Dad’s parents in Steubenville, Ohio were MeMa and Pap. I didn’t get to choose their names, I was told what their names were. I think you and Rebecca and going to be wonderful, doting grandparents and the love you two are going to receive from that little girl will be amazing :-). And Megan-thank you for great editing work!

Debra Crockett

Garrett - isn't that AUF hoch Deutsch, not IN?

Luise

CONGRATULATIONS Papa Robbie!

Estelle Keller

I was expecting Garrett like he has done with character names to try and create a unique nickname for the grand baby to call Robbie by mixing his name and a traditional grandparent name by deleting the gra in grandpa or gramps to get Rondpa or Romps or something…congrats to the entire family.

Christina

Congratulations, Robbie, on becoming a grandfather! I became a young grandmother nearly 2 years ago--she calls me grandma. Being a grandparent is an amazing experience, more so than a parent. It's a much different dynamic. As for the episode itself... I've always enjoyed this one for the medical ethics reason. I have my own living will in place. Seems as though, in today's world, you need one. My winner is the mud. lol Every time I see that image of Tom covered in mud, it makes me laugh. The loser is everyone who had to put up with the Doc's holoimage slideshow.

Icy Pioneer

"Why did you torture our buddy?" "You're welcome" LMAO! I'm not the only one who noticed that. Congrats on the grandbaby!

Stephanie

Robbie you could go by RD (AreDee ) I had a grand dad who went by his first two initials.

Jennifer Z

I recommend "Opa" for Robbie. A fun European grandpa name!

Luise

Hard agree. Where I come from "Papa" is Dad. Grandpa would be "Opa".

Luise

You got the hard words in German this time, wheeww. Good job, both!

Jenny

I know a lot of Pop Pops. And one Popcorn. My favorite is Bopbop.

Jenny

I know a Bopbop to his grandchildren, and love that.

Jenny

Pretty sure Chakotay has an office (they certainly used it with him and Janeway in Sacred Ground, and I think early in Tattoo) - I've often gotten thrown when a scene is described as being in Chakotay's quarters when it's usually what I've thought was his office. It doesn't look like anywhere in his quarters we've seen early in the show (like with Seska and the mushroom soup), or later in the series. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tuvok also has a non-club-Tuvok office, at least seen when Quinn asks him for help back in season two.

Bronson Turnquist

Here's the German I have stuck in my head: "Radio Regenbogen, hundred svei comma eins!" and "Das Beleibtest radio, Ell pay ell.... ell pay ell eins!"

Rach V

Walter!!! I Iove Walter. He's so gorgeous. 🥰

Sadie tuescher

Another great example of how special effects and costumes can ruin an otherwise good episode.

Jill Florio

You referred to The Darkest Timeline! That's just streets ahead.

Paul Johnston

Only thing I find slightly confusing in this episode is in the previous episode 'message in a bottle' Tom challenges Harry yo make a holodoc version 2. Harry says it could take months if not years to get things right. Yet it seems in this episode its 'computer create a likeness' and then 'download data from the computer'. Surely it's the same thing in this episode done in mins. Also you can't help but think you could create any likeness that's not Cardassian and download the same files into that character. Would negate the whole 'its a Cardassian' thing and hence no episode. Hell surely you could just download the knowledge straight into the doc and he'd know. But then kinda covered that with the 'brush up' line lol

ST Fan CB

Really do not understand the continuing confusion about the Kazon and aspects of their technology. Maybe it is for humor. The Kazon stole the ships and technology from the Tabe. Either the Tabe did not know how to make water (unlikely) or the Kazon just can't figure out how to work that aspect of the Tabe technology.
