The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Thirty Days. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Thirty Days:
Voyager discovers a massive ocean floating in space, populated by an alien species in trouble, and Tom Paris is accused of breaking with protocol.

Like the new format. Garrett gets needle for G's. Robbie has butt fire.

SnazzyO

This is a great episode in terms of plot, action, and character development. But this episode also makes my blood boil for the harsh punishment compared to other crew misbehavior. It’s hard to not see this is a personal issue for Janeway because she orders Tom shot at and the demotion/solitary. It does a disservice to Capt. Janeway’s character. I get that for story drama she says he lost protected status but that is completely at odds with ‘family’ message. OTOH, blowing up the facility was way over the line for Tom. He needed to sabotage the plant but firing on it was extreme. Again, drama over character. But all other characters work and plot was outstanding. ETA: The firing sequence was particularly compelling. The countdown and then Janeway versus Paris both saying ‘fire.’ It felt like a test of wills.

Dee McGee

I got blasted once for saying that I 💯 disagreed with Janeway's decision to put Tom in the brig.

Selene

You don‘t use „Tschüss“ in Bavaria. Definitely not.

Tashicat

i live the idea of learning Klingonese. Q'apla!

Andrew Murray

did you get any footage that Ron Howard can use in his next "space" film - ha ha. Cast and crew did the "vomit comet" for real in Apollo 13, so just sayin....

Andrew Murray

that "resident alien" looks like a cross between Alien Nation aliens (TV show from ...I forget when) and E.T. (Spielberg film). Needs to be on your bookshelf along with "Baby Yoda" and a Mugwai.

Andrew Murray

What I'm wondering. Does Admiral Paris ever get this letter. Tom did file it for sending when they were in proximity to Earth (or at least when able to send a message to Earth).

Christopher Collins

I did not know Robbie Duncan McNeil has directed any episodes of White Collar. I love that show. Especially the first 3 seasons, and season 5 of the show. Rest In Peace Willie Garson. Loved his roles.

Christopher Collins

I would have never guessed that the brig scenes were added after the original shooting. I did not realize they were not in the original script. That is interesting that they were done after the original shooting because the episode was short by 10 minutes. I actually liked the brig scenes because they bring us comedy but also liked that there was backstory with a space battle without Tom and we learn about someone else besides our normal regular cast at the helm.

Christopher Collins

I am surprised Robbie did not remember that this was the Captain Proton burn the butt episode and Delaney Sisters episode since those are big things talked about so much in this episode.

Christopher Collins

It’s crazy that the Delaney Sister’s got mentioned so early on in season 1 like in episode 3 or 4 and yet this is the only time we see them on screen on Voyager. We never see what they Delaney Sisters actually do on Voyager and I don’t know why they were never brought back on the show.

Christopher Collins

I always thought it was odd that Tom’s love of the ocean was introduced in this episode too but the only hint of that prior to this episode was in the Year of Hell Part I with Tom’s idea to solve less damage on the ship by a Titanic.

Christopher Collins

I think that this episode visually made the Delta Flyer inside look the best. You don’t get that much more as far as decisions on where to put the camera.

Andrew Murray

Tom kind of prompting Riga into asking for his help is kind a "leading the witness, objection your Honor!" moment, to justify the fine line Tom's walking concerning the prime directive and non-interference.

Andrew Murray

less so a depth-charge and more a standard torpedo a submarine would fire. Although the goal wasn't to destroy the Flyer or sink it......it was to force it to resurface.

Matt

OMG, that's where my butt caught on fire!! LOL!!

sab ewell

I always thought B'Elanna didn't visit because Janeway didn't allow it. But I could see B'Elanna sneaking in somehow

Craig Drebit

I kinda liked the old language lesson!!! Oh well, this will be fun. :) I do hope that the missing scenes aren't always some kind of JC nonsense, though lol

Estelle Keller

I thought the loser would have been everything that went on with Robbie getting injured on set…fun episode about a sad story about pollution. At the end of the day who knows if the planet survived…

Christina

This is one of my favorite Tom Paris episodes. We get to see a whole new side of him, a side when he takes a stand for a good cause and says to hell with the consequences. Robbie had amazing performance! If you hadn’t said it, I never would have known the brig scenes weren’t original. That part is what makes this episode so awesome. The story is Tom writing a letter to his father, explaining what happened. It’s all very touching.

Christopher Collins

I found it unique the writing a diary log of the events is one idea we also see in DS9 in the 6th season episode In the Pale Moonlight. I am not sure why Episodes going through a diary of past events showing dramatic events for characters with consequences works so well in Star Trek. I think TNG had an episode like this going through a log record of events but this was executed very well. Maybe Data’s Day but that was being written in the current as time goes along whereas these two episodes I mentioned before with In the Pale Moonlight and 30 Days are episodes where characters are writing about the events after it occurred. One difference is Sisko erases his log vs Paris who saves and sends his letter.

Christopher Collins

I like the change of what was missing over what would you do different.

Christopher Collins

I think the Brig scenes help this episode hit the emotional levels that it would not do otherwise.

DogBlud

Yeah given what I said re: my personal theory that Janeway's punishment of Tom is directly attributable to how disappointed she is in him rather than anything to do with protocol, I could absolutely buy that she took it that far.

B obrien

Will be interesting to see where they go with their new format about what we don’t remember

Stephanie

This has always been one of my favorite episodes. The environment was a big cause in the '90's and sadly still as relevant today!

Stephanie

There have been hints a long the way that Tom loves sailing. The halo program he wanted to take B'Lanna on the first time he asks her out was sailing on Lake Como. She always seems to like beach programs so I always imagine those are the kind of programs Tom and B'Elanna run together.

shannon brown

Ugh. Can't believe it's this far into the podcast! Maybe when you get to the end you can go back and do "Delta Flyers - Deep Dive" and bring in a cast member, director, writer etc and do whole episodes with them like you have for some of the episodes this time around. Those have been my favorites (miss Martha Hackett!!)

Max Wilson

Oh man, I got so hyped when he started to bring down his baby alien. I thought he was about to bring down the starship models I sent them. But alas, it was not. Hahaha

Luise

"Three Push-ups" you and me both, Robbie.

B obrien

Isn’t Robbie the first name of LT flashy pilot calhane? No wonder Harry got confused. 😉

Jennifer Z

Hmm, that synopsis... I think Robbie might be a secret P/J shipper. I encourage this!

Jennifer Z

I'm gonna say yes, because further down in season 6 or 7 they get an opportunity to transmit everything they have to Starfleet including personal logs.

Stephanie Baker

Missing scene: Tom opening the secret door in the brig to groom himself

Brian

Well Robbie made me want to watch Moonfall now. Great episode, and STILL so sadly relevant to our climate issues and the politics around it. That's what's so great about Star Trek!

Justin Rhoads

Was waiting forever for German as the main language lesson, and they get rid of it right when it starts. Figures….

Considering that Janeway has broken the Prime Directive at least 6 or 7 times by now, her command philosophy must be "do as I say and not as I do". What a freaking hypocrite this captain is. Added to that as discussed by the boys is that others have done just as much or far worse in disobeying her commands and nothing happened to them. It must be that Paris is, as Chakotay once said - "her personal reclamation project" to get her so butt hurt and cause her to react so strongly. In any case, the prime directive does not apply in this case using precedent in other shows. The prime directive only applies to species on their native planet. They are not native to the ball of water. Further, Paris is not interfering in the development of their society. So he did not violate the prime directive, but he did ignore Janeway's orders. I so much wanted to hear Janeway talk like Col Klink when she sentenced him - "sertdy days in ze coola!" Been saying Garrett should have been doing Star Trek languages from the beginning. The big spenders finally changed his mind. I didn't get any survey. Harumph.
