The only comment I have for this episode... I had the amazing privilege of singing 'You are my sunshine' with Bob Picardo on stage at a convention and it was awesome! :)

SnazzyO

It’s a lovely episode. The ‘You Are My Sunshine’ duet is pitch perfect (pun intended). I always laugh out loud at the ‘fortress ovum’ gestures as well. Robert Picardo is just outstanding at comedy, drama, and pathos. Garrett: I will never see the Doc as ‘just a program.’ The show has established he is sentient. So in my mind he gets to have. Romantic interests. It was a good choice, IMO, for Seven to initiate a ‘study’ of romantic relationships. If she was not curious, then the whole thing would have been gross. But since it was her instinct to start exploring the topic, I think the Doctor was the perfectly safe mentor (which is why I’m glad he held his tongue). Perhaps later a romantic relationship would be okay but not when he is her ‘teacher/mentor.’ Kudos to whoever came up with the ‘chance encounter’ picture. It’s so very reminiscent of school pamphlet staged pictures. It matches the Doctor’s teaching style. I found it interesting that Robbie felt Tom was ‘innocent’ in the bet reveal. That was not a conversation to have unless you were SURE she already knew. I kind of thought it was cruel. So, one the one hand I’m grateful for an interpretation that makes Tom less cruel, OTOH, I the rationale seems soft. Ethan Phillips had some awesome one liners this episode and makes the comedy look effortless. Finally, any Pygmalion story carries the risk of a man’s view on how a woman should act. In this case, Seven needed to develop social skills before her rude behavior got her nose broke. So, I see the need for the lessons. And ultimately, she subverts the trope by ending the lessons. She decides she’s learned enough. And she HAS. She demonstrates consideration for other’s feelings and actual tact during the episode. While she has had moments of this before, I think she understands the ‘why’ much better. So, good character development episode for Seven and the Doctor. Funny and delightful.

Last time I watched this episode with my 5 year old he got up and started singing "you are my sunshine" with The Doctor and Seven.

Dee McGee

My winner is also RDM!

Tashicat

to me thisll always be the "She's All That" episode

Craig Drebit

Loving all of the Canadian TV references! KITH, Brain Candy, Street Legal. Note that when RDM is mentioning "Brad", he really means Bruce McCullough 😊

Tashicat

Im thankful for what Picardo said because it shows at least one person is aware of how this ep comes off as the EMH grooming 7 to be what he wants, its gross and creepy

Kassandra

I absolutely LOVE Someone to watch over me, great dialogs. Robbie and Garrett were talking about that it is impossible to fall in love with a program. The movie "her" exactly deals with that topic. Cool and interesting movie to watch.

Andrew Murray

speak of short seasons why is Trek these days no more than 10 eps. I mean in Voyager's day it was 24 eps (and in Australia the air season was basically March to October (Autum to Spring) these days (Picard, Discovery, Strange New Worlds) it is 10 and then 12 months basically for the returning season.

Andrew Murray

Seven found a romantic interest in Unimatrix Zero didn't she?

Andrew Murray

Not the first time someone has used a holo-rendition of the same character - Barkley did it, (felt more comfortable around the holographic crew); Geordi did so - fell for Leah Brahms hologram, (which/who(?) was the diagnostic program for some issue with the Enterprise-D. etc).

Andrew Murray

The Doctor also legitimately uses holographic representations of the crew for medical diagnosis. Like "Conspiracy"(or which ever it was) when Janeway erased his memory due to his conflict over choosing a friend vs another crewman to save the life of. I think "Conspiracy" was the one with Seven saw things in past events making her think there was something suspicious going on, where it was only her overactive imagination.

Tashicat

What Robbie said too, about Seven needing someone whos an ex borg to have common ground for a relationship is to me why she ended up with Chakotay. Even tho I never felt they had real chemistry, he was a logical choice for her to persue both because hed been in a hive mind in Unity AND because his mind was the first/last mental contact she had when she was disconnected from the borg in Scorpion, it gives them a starting point to work from. Also, she probly got tired of dudes always after her so it makes a sort of twisted logical sense to hook up with the one guy who doesnt hit on her n then she can say "i have a boyfriend, back off" to creepers like the emh [which she pretty much does in EndGame]

Tashicat

pretty sure "conspiracy" is a tng ep, the voy one is called "the voyager conspiracy" and thats not even the ep ur referring to lol, youre talking about "Latent Image"

Tashicat

I wish her n Axum couldve found each other in the waking world

Samantha

Ha. It's funny that Kate got along with the guest star. She does seem to love a funny guy. Picardo is so knowledgeable and insightful. My secondhand embarrassment is strong in this ep, but it's one of the best still.

bakura

Here's what I don't get. First seven now tomin got drunk on synthehol..........................HOW? The literal point of synthehol is to NOT get you drunk, it has all the taste and smell of alcohol but none of the negative effects like intoxication, addiction, or poisoning. Looking at memory alpha it appears it didn't completely replace alcohol nor does it look like it was outlawed so I'm assuming starfleet ships are dry ships. Hence the synthehol and yet it somehow still got 2 people drunk, and one of those was still technically human.

Lisa Minnesma

When Bob said they had the Doctor intentionally pause when the lyrics said “you’ll never know dear, how much I love you” WOW! Mind blown!!! 🤯

Karen Chuplis

I recall at least two occasions when Seven brings up how talkative Harry is. I think that was the deal breaker. 😁

Lisa Minnesma

And they said Seven’s nano probes could absorb the alcohol in Tomin, right? But does that mean the Borg can’t get drunk? Bc Seven gets a little tipsy in Timeless 🤔

Lisa Minnesma

I still think that Seven would have been perfect with Axom! And the show should’ve could’ve paired Harry with Lyndsay Ballard! I really enjoyed the Harry Lyndsay pairing.

Griffin

Tiny correction but at 20:25 you mention they did Brain Candy then the show but you have the order backwards the TV show was first the Movie after.

Samantha

if they can keep you subscribing for twelve months for fewer episodes, why not? if they could sell you a subscription for one episode a year, that would be ideal. from their pov. basically there's no incentive for them to do more than the bare minimum. Back in the day you had to crank out 100 episodes for a show to get syndicated (shown over and over on cable) and that's where your long term money was. Under a subscription model where you are not selling the show to anyone and people will sign up for far less, 100 episodes would be a waste of production money.

Heather Irwin

I was not expecting a Bruce Arians quote as the lesson, but I am here for it :D

Luise

BUT WHY IS HARRY NOT A CANDIDATE?

Luise

If Tom pulls double shifts in sick bay, who flies the ship? When does he sleep?/have free time with B'elanna? How do shifts on a starship even work?

Mary Burch

I really wish Janeway had laid a little more discipline on Seven. She was effectively stalking Tom and B'Elanna! She needed to understand that behavior was completely inappropriate and that if she wants to learn about romance, there are ways to do it without violating her crewmates' privacy.

Mary Burch

Also (sorry Garrett), but I'm grossed out by the idea of Seven in a romantic relationship with anybody. She's still VERY young emotionally, and consent is a big issue. Plus, at least in this point in her development, she comes off as asexual. I really wish the episode had ended with her telling the Doc that she wanted to learn about romance but ultimately decided that she's either not ready or not interested in participating right now.

Luise

There is an episode on DS9 where someone sneakily tries to make a hologram of Major Kira for his own sexual gratification. When Kira finds out, she is *not* amused.

Theresa Volz

Fantastic episode! One of my favorites! I gave it a 9.0. So much fun!

Eleanor Capaldi

I find a good similarity between an EMH discovering human emotions with Data. It was a different angle on a very strong character journey. And Seven falls into that too. Looking back at it from modern eyes it is weird to me, but in another way makes sense perhaps given the era, how much focus was put on men's feelings towards Seven in the show. She was objectified and sexualised, and no amount of her perplexity in the face of it undid that for me. I still think she's smart and brilliant, but...it wasn't good messaging for the young girl that I was watching. And despite the ratings surge following her introduction it's interesting that's when I fell away from the show first time around. Another sign of the times - it was seen as automatic that she would be heterosexual. In all this exploration of her emotional development and personal relationships it wasn't even entertained that she might be interested in another gender, or all genders, or none. It was assumed she would be sexual and towards men, full stop. Assumed and default. Which, in a world like the 24th century as otherwise imagined by Star Trek just wouldn't be the case. So, the way they've explored her sexuality with Raffi in Picard has been hugely rewarding and gratifying, and while they definitely drew it out and perhaps unfairly made audiences wait, the characters had their romantic reunion in the end. It was so cool.

Max Wilson

I asked Michael Okuda what the Hasperat really was. He said, cream cheese, bell peppers, wrapped in a tortilla. So, Robbie was correct.

Stephanie

I agree with Robbie's missed scene. I always thought that it was a big fail in the series that they never developed the 7/ B'Elanna relationship outside of slight hostility. I always just figured most of the writers were men and fell into the old "women can't really be friends with each other" bullshit. I think it would have been a great episode where B'Elanna and 7 went off to away mission and had a "what happen in Vegas stays in Vegas" type adventure. But in all reality having 7 be friends with a woman her own age, with similar interest is more authentic than the creepy old man vibe going on with the doctor.

DogBlud

Bob's answer about the Doctor and Seven's relationship was *so, so good*, and so, so right that it really deserves honorable mention. Absolute bullseye.

Danie

This makes sense, even though (imo) the pairing doesn't. Also the level of emotional intelligence/gentleness Chakotay has is a huge plus.

Danie

I mean, also the fact that she's queer and in Voyager she pretty much only interacts with 3 non-cis males, being Janeway & B'elanna and a literal child lol. Maybe I'm projecting a bit here but I never read her as asexual but more a/demiromantic and ethically non-monogamous. A lot of her replies to the Doctor's questions about her "romantic" proclivaties feel very much aligned with my own 😂

Jill Florio

Once of my absolute favorite episodes of Trek. So heartfelt and poignant and sweet. thank you , Robbie!

Jill Florio

In a real sense, both 7 and the Doctor are extremely young. The dr is only a few years old, and 7 was abducted at a young age and never had the chance to progress emotionally. The fact that the dr 'looks' older is inconsequential.

ST Fan CB

I LOVED Garrett's no words reaction to the watch back when 7 tells Kim that he is not a candidate. LOLs for reals. All the gigaquads of data that Seven collected is all the porn she downloaded during her "study" of human mating rituals. The Ambassador story in this episode is a quasi-ripoff of a ST:TNG episode "Liaisons. In that TNG episode, there is also an alien ambassador who over indulges and imbibes and Troi has to put up with him the whole time. I don't think that there is anything wrong with the doctor's comment about "better late than never". Just a bit of a joke and a huge overreaction by RDM and Garrett over nothing. Why do people in every series of Star Trek, think that it is ok to wonder into someone else's holodeck program? People are pretty damn rude in the future as it happens all time. Paris seems pretty worked up and overly aggressive about this bet. RDM is playing him like he just got insulted. The synopsis for this episode on Patreon is actually the one for the previous episode of Juggernaut.
