The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Good Shepherd. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Good Shepherd:
When three crewmen are shown to be hampering efficiency, Captain Janeway decides to give them some special attention by taking them on an away mission.

I’m a very musical type of person and would love to be part of some kind of Delta Flyer’s musical!!!

Ms Nike Morgan

I need a pair of scissors to trim Robbie's moustache!! 😂

This was the third episode in a row with no or minimal screen time for the majority of the series regulars beyond Seven and Janeway. Its almost as if Kim, Parris, Torres, Tuvok, Neelix and Chakotay all became recurring characters in a show starring Janeway, Seven and the Doctor. These now 2nd tier characters are similar to Dukat, Rom, Nog, Garrak, Weyoun and Martok on DS9.

David H Dykema

I throw my hat in the ring to play Jason Alexander from Think Tank in the musical 😅

Tiffiny Lawrie

Every time I watch this episode I remember that it's the one that the audio for the Delta Flyer Xmas tree decoration is from 😜

This is a memorable episode (for me). I think it hits all the right notes on what it means to have a large crew. But this one event by the Capt is not enough. She should institute an away mission protocol that within each department, crew members are monitored for away missions logged and some balance maintained. Otherwise, if lose the really experienced person, the newbie may be all that’s left behind. Nits: I’m annoyed Tom wasn’t there. They keep officially elevating Seven’s position although she is not Star Fleet. One of the issues is that there is no Chief Science Officer. I think Janeway performs that function herself. Seven should NOT be in a supervisory role. She can be the senior Astrodynamics scientist but someone else should be the boss. Also, why on earth would anyone need to know algorithms - computers and programs do that now. I know it was for plot, but it was distracting. Janeway, Seven, B’Elanna, and Harry can do that level of math in their head. No one else. Except Mortimer.

I always liked this episode. The lower decks of Voyager seem like a quiet, cosy place to work. That'd be my spot on the ship.

Spoiler if you have not watched this episode of The Delta Flyers -- loving the Delta Flyer Prep progress bar overlay. LOL

Tashicat

i love this ep ngl. my 2 fav lines are "missing a couple of base pairs?" and "AT LEAST I HAVE A FRIEND" <3

Fun fact: Nimoy always said "sense-OARS" because he was from Boston and trying to disguise his Boston accent. Russ must have started saying it that way as an homage to Nimoy.

Andrew Murray

Garrett should call his (future....) Tesla the Galileo (after the Enterprise NCC-1701 shuttlecraft))

Andrew Murray

crew member just transferred from Enterprise D says "Deck 42" (computer voice (Majel) says "What do you think this is - the ENTERPRISE?!

Andrew Murray

I'm just laughing at some of Google Chrome's auto subtitles - "lowered X" (lower decks) and "asymetrics" (astrometrics)...... worse than Google Translate or YT auto sub titles.

Andrew Murray

I'd say even Tom Paris (or Han Solo for that matter, his ship is already a hunk of junk) probably couldn't prevent the dark matter tearing the ship apart

Andrew Murray

didn't this show already do the "flat mates" scenario, where Neelix ends up sharing with Tuvok, and they drive each other bananas?

Andrew Murray

flat mate matchups - Tuvok and Chakotay, given they both have their need for quiet space/meditation and what have you. I don't think they'd annoy each other.

Jeremy Taylor

Janeway and three misfits on the Flyer Their nerves are tested under fire The Captain's compassion gets through And out of the blue They escape their cosmic quagmire

is it bad janeway doesn't know her way on deck 15? i only ask because picard made it a point to walk every deck of his ship the moment he came on board and as part of a old maritime tradition he walked each deck of the enterprise before battle with the borg and can only assume he did the same for other upcoming battle's. my point is picard would have a good knowledge of each deck of the enterprise which had 42 deck's but janeway apparently can't manage a mere 15 and a much smaller ship at that.

Karen Chuplis

My ex plant for walking instructions or pads as happens in all modern ST since TOS, is that early studies at NASA (truth now) they discovered staying in one position more than 20-30 minutes puts you on a pre-diabetic state. If you are standing you should sit for a brief period if you are sitting you should get up and walk for a few minutes. This was integrated through the years as unless there is an emergency situation, information that is an actual requisition is walked from one area to another to maintain health. This would especially be important on a big automated ship. Exercise is good but it doesn’t negate this effect. See Dr. Joan Vernikos research while studying astronauts at NASA early on. Author of Sitting Kills, Moving Heals. It just became a traditional protocol.

The Real Andrew Kim

I always believed the "...to the left" line was a wink and nod to Tom's and RATM's political leanings which they are not shy about and which is probably why they didn't play that moment for comedy to emphasize his line more. Tom Morello was already one of my favorite musician's before this episode and I remember seeing him appear when this episode first aired and it blew my mind! And then when he said "to the left" i freaked out (in a good way) because it was such a subtle way to speak out the RATM fans.

SM Rosenberg

I don't think the Alien Entity had actively fixed anything in Billy - I think what was implied was that he'd faced his greatest fear and it hadn't killed him, so he was no longer afraid. Essentially exposure therapy, extreme style. I always want to like episodes like these, with oddball characters working together and learning lessons, but while I really liked Celes and Billy, the story felt so paint-by-numbers to me, and I didn't feel like Janeway's leadership was particularly compelling here. Honestly, I would have preferred a real lower deckers story that didn't feature Janeway so heavily, and actually allowed the characters to learn their own lessons and find their own strengths without her handing it to them. How could this story have played out if Janeway was incapacitated on the away mission, and they had to work together to save her and get back to Voyager? Robbie would probably hate it for not featuring any major characters, but it would have been more interesting to me if done well.

Sarah Zeisler

Prions are essentially mis-folded proteins that cause disease. Your DNA codes for the structure of proteins. These proteins serve different functions and their function relies on the proteins being folded a specific way and a very specific shape in order for them to preform their function. Prion diseases cause an mis-folding of certain proteins which renders them unable to function. If you have heard of mad cow disease or chronic waisting disease in deer these are diseases caused by prions. -Dr. Zeisler DVM

I came here expecting Robbie to give this episode a 2! I would have bet Garrett a hundred bucks on it lol. I am shocked! 😱😂

Tara

In the pilot I believe she talks about having studied the ship's schematic(s) for months, when she first comes on board and that Admiral quizzes her about some quantum physics thing or something. But in Voyager, that would have been years ago now, and when was the last time she needed to go down to Deck 15? It's plausible that she might get turned around, but mostly it's a plot device and it is amusing.
