The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Fury. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Fury:
Former crewman Kes returns to exact revenge on Captain Janeway, betraying the ship to an alien life form that will absorb the crew's internal organs.

Just in terms of "The Voyager" I don't really get why that's an issue. In the original series and The Next Generation they often referred to "The Enterprise". /shrug/

Craig Drebit

It's because the ship was mentioned 254,964 times during it's run and only once was it referred to that way, and I such a dopey voice. 😆

Tashicat

Its weird to me that they decided it was tachyons. The first time i rly saw this i thought it was because Tuvok had a mental bond with Kes from all his time mentoring her and thats why he could feel that something was off during the bridge/ready room moment

Andrew Murray

At least tis time, technically the 'reset button' is not pushed. They just change the circumstances of old-Kes's encounter with the ship again rather than an outright "reset" of the timeline.

Andrew Murray

Tom did have a school-boy crush on Kes in Season 1, which lead to Neelix's jealousy towards him.

Andrew Murray

Captain Picard...sorry Professor X is the only X-man with telepathic powers?

Andrew Murray

This should have been a joyous reunion episode with Kes, because I didn't buy the old Kes being bitter towards Voyager for abandonment and all that. Kes could also have easily returned home in as her new evolved self - and at that stage wasn't the angry being portrayed here. Her people may have been a bit taken aback, but she could have helped defend her people against the Vidians (e.g. sending them TWENTY Thousand light years away). I would have liked it a bit more like the crewmember Lindsay episode that shows up (the one that's apparently dead....) and also an earlier one where the alien species make you forget who they are).

Andrew Murray

Admirals ranking lowest ever? Even lower than Threshold?

Andrew Murray

my loser is the Doctor for not noticing Kes had turned up the cortical stimulator to 1.21 Gigawatts.....

Andrew Murray

I would not go as far as to name this episode "The Wrath of Kes" (you can see where I'm headed)....but it's basically what we got until Janeway's reconciliation with her the second time around. I'm not sure a trip to Genesis and a cat and mouse hunt through gaseous nebulae would have been on the books for Janeway. Besides, isn't Genesis "the forbidden planet"? :)

D. H.

Seska is not done! Please bring Martha back for her last episode in season 7! 🙏

B obrien

I thought this episode was so wrong/sad on so many levels

B obrien

totally agree with Andrew m. Why make Jennifer come back

B obrien

to this poorly (totally confusing to me ) plot

Chris Denny

The story was very plausible, and I thought was done very well. I don’t understand the confusion. The character Kes goes through an extraordinary transformation and is flooded with emotions while trying to make sense of the whole change she has undergone. Throughout the range of emotions that she is experiencing, depression and anger creep in to fill the void. Not finding any clear answers to explain her current state she turns her thoughts back to Voyager, and instead starts blaming them for everything that has happened to her and decides to seek revenge on them and tries to rescue herself. It’s an easy concept to understand, and a great story arc .

David Turner

I’m surprised the Admirals ranked this episode so low! Whilst I admit I never warmed to the character of Kes, I felt she was poorly written and executed, I do nevertheless find this an enjoyable and exciting story. Much better than Once Upon A Time or dare I say Threshold!

Samantha

To me there was an obvious 'kes might go dark with all her power' arc going on earlier. It's a part of a lot of her episodes. But then they just didn't do anything with it. I enjoyed seeing Kes as the older more jaded person back in the past where everyone expects her to be sunny old Kes. But the overall plot relied too heavily on characters being dumb. And there was a pretty lame ending. I'm pissed because Kes deserved better. But at least they didn't kill her off like they were originally going to.

Dylan Maguire

Tuvok was able to sense that stuff was off because Vulcans have telepathic abilities! And likely old Kes has a strong psychic bond with Tuvok because of all the training they did together in earlier seasons.

Dawn Smith

In one of the relaunch novels, I don’t remember which one, Kes is alive and well. She figured out how to live longer and help her people and was no longer angry. I like that.

Mary Burch

They hadn’t started doing ratings when they recorded the Threshold episode. I suspect Threshold would be higher. (I’m not a fan of that episode, but I like it more than this one!)

Samantha

Kes is angry in her quarters because Neelix is getting to her in spite of herself. She can feel her old self coming back and she's pissed because she wants to be bitter and hate these people. She wants to keep her resolve and accomplish her mission.

TheDeltaFlyers

Our Admirals and Captains participate in the ratings, so it's a group of over 100 people who participate.

Mary Burch

To each their own! I’m glad people like this episode! I think this was an interesting idea but very poorly executed.

The Real Andrew Kim

Just wanted to point out your cat pops up into the shot right after you say "Torres is dead?" like she's going "did you say Torres died?" and then when you yell the cat looks at you like you're a crazy hoomahn XD

Patti Babiuch

I wonder how Jennifer Lean felt about returning to shoot this episode. I would think that the cast and crew were friendly and welcoming. Difficult for everyone I'm sure.

Kassandra

Now I know why I did not like Kes' character as a child. My parents watched VOY when I was really young and some of the earlier seasons I don't recall that much. So my childhood memory of Kes was the one of a angry villain threatening the captain and killing crew members. I rewatched the show (along with the Delta Flyers) and was positively surprised what a great character Kes was in the earlier episodes (also how crucial she was to the character development of The Doctor). So Fury did some unnecessary harm to the character of Jennifer Lien, in my humble opinion.

Mr Paris

Hey, I noticed Kess’ shape was larger in her first scene then her dress fit better in the very next scene. Was there a lot of time during this episode. It looks like she slimmed down.

Taisho Rose

HAHAHA!!! I forgot that Picard was Xavier! Of course, there was one character who was supposedly stronger. In the comics Professor X stated that Jean Grey was a more powerful telepath than he was. So maybe Janeway is Jean Grey...I mean, the names are so similar! However, Jean Grey became unstable after she was caught in a solar flare, some villains manipulated her and she eventually became the Dark Phoenix, a threat to the entire cosmos. It was one of the most popular and tragic story arcs in the history of comics. They based the 3rd X Men film on it and also recently made another standalone movie out of it, sort of a re-do, but for reasons I don't understand, none of the movies follow the original storyline whatsoever. It would make a better TV series IMO.

Kris Hansen

I remember not liking this episode the first time I saw it. I think I was sad that Kes left on her great adventure and ended up feeling isolated and alone. Don't we all fear that, or fear that for our children? This story really undercuts "The Gift." If they want to bring back an evil Kes, then I think Garrett's and Robbie's ideas are much better-- perhaps a bit of dementia that Voyager can help with?

Christinaof9

Well I'm definitely in the minority with my personal 9.5 rating of this episode! I wish I could vote! This is one of the most heartbreaking Voyager episodes, it gets me every time, but it is also one of my favorites and so captivating. Jennifer Lien deserved an Emmy for a chilling performance. I hear everyone saying it "ruined" The Gift Kes send off, and I get how it was disappointing and sad in one way, but I didn't see it that way. Instead, I believe that BECAUSE of The Gift, my all time favorite Voyager episode, FURY is just that much more poetically, tragically, BEAUTIFUL. It is woven together so methodically, with such emotion and sometimes shock that it speaks to the heart in a way that, to me, puts it in the top tier of all time Voyager, and all of Trek, episodes, period. Like a well sung tragic song, this episode sticks with you, which, for any kind of writer, is the best outcome you can hope for. Whether you like the content of it or not...It provokes strong feelings. And that's always is the formula of a strong episode/song/movie/book IMO. The only issue I have with it, and I had really hoped Garrett and Robbie would address this topic, is the fact that Janeway and Tuvok now know in advance about Seven and the Borg children, as well as what eventually happened with Kes in The Gift. Did Janeway try to stop her leaving because of what she knew would happen to her? I suppose not because it happened again. So maybe it was a Prime Directive thing that she did not interfere, or else Kes argued that she wouldn't make the same mistakes because she knew in advance... And did knowing about Seven in advance influence Janeway this time in history? A lot of open ends I will admit, but it's part of what makes me so enthralled with the episode too. If Garrett and Robbie are listening, would love to know your thoughts on these time travel questions!

Taisho Rose

I love the post credits scene!!! HAHAHA!!! "I don't even like B'Elanna. She's mean." I laughed out loud. If they really wanted to make it seem like season one they should have made Chakotay the most upset about B'Elanna's death since there was weird B'akotay shippiness that early on.

Brian Denham

Rocky theme- Eye of The Flyer.

Rachelle H

I think this episode is very sad as art and reality was blended. As Jennifer has very bad mental illness in real life and has had so many problems with the law and this is sad as Kes was having a mental breakdown. Too close to home when you know what happened to the real actress

ST Fan CB

The cockpit of Kes' ship is almost identical to that of CPT Paxton's time ship. There is something wrong with the demeanor of Kes when Janeway confronts her at the end. There is no anger before she remembers the past. She should have acted angry and threatening not meek and submissive. In the last scene, they were beaming Kes to her ship. Remember they were prepared for her and put a tractor beam on it and it did not dock with Voyager so it was still out in space. Tuvok even stated that her ship was still in intact and Kim did not report a hull breach as he did the first time. Jason's past and current reference to nitpicking reminds of a collection of books I have written by Phil Farrand. These books are collectively called "The Nitpickers Guide to Star Trek". The series covers TOS, TNG and 4 seasons of DS9 and is a great reference to prop, dialog and cannon inconsistencies both great and small. The haters in the world caused him to stop writing and sadly he never finished DS9 or covered Voyager. These books can still be found on Amazon.

David H Dykema

I agree with the guys, this Kes bring back was strange. They really didn't unpack why she was super pissed to a degree I could run with it. Oh well, always cool to have a return episode

Jenny

Lol, that scene with Tuvok was Janeway’s quarters. Definitely not the ready room, and then towards the end of it we get a shot of the orange lighting, so it isn’t Club Tuvok or Tuvok’s office, haha. (I was curious so jumped there to check!)

SnazzyO

I am of two minds. The first is: ‘How DARE you!’ I loved Kes, hated her exit (in general), and this is salt in the would. I want names of the guilty responsible and then give them the stink eye! Other mind, if they had just played up the dementia angle. They made Kes angry and ‘forgot who she was’. In real life, dementia causes the elderly to mistrust people. They often only trust people from much earlier relationships. If only they had used this angle, it would have explained Kes’ motivation. If only they had involved more of the crew trying to bring her back. *sigh*. It was generally decently executed but the concept of Evil Kes isn’t just bad, it’s offensive.

Jason Eberl

BTW, the title of the Rocky workout montage song is “Gonna Fly Now” - quite apropos for this podcast ;-)

Dee McGee

They really damaged her character. They could have easily played up the dementia angle.
